Q: Are they possible to be washed without falling apart?

They wash well. I even died mine. I'm a novice dye-er and the dye only took on the threading and very faintly on band itself.

Q: Can these be folded in half lengthwise so that they are an inch wide rather than 2" wide?

Probably, but I use these in my L'BRI business for facials and the wider they are the better it holds their hair back while we are doing facials.

Q: Are they too big for 8 year old head?

No, they fit pretty well for my 9 and 10 year olds

Q: Would these work well to attach buttons to for healthcare professionals to attach their masks to instead of their ears?

I don’t think they are thick enough or strong enough. They stretch out very easy and are not strong elastic. They are made out of a thin knit material. They are really for one time use.
