How loud if the 14” drum? My kid wants to use it for his beginning cheer for swim meets. Not sure if this will do the trick.

My kids swam too and a drum is not as loud as a cow bell (that is what they used), but it might work. You'll need to put some twine on opposite side if not already there, for your son to hold it. It will sounds louder and better than if he held it by the frame itself. Use a beater that is harder at the strike end and it will be loud enough for a swim meet.

Is this like a daf? Good for gheri Persian music?

I would not use this as a daf because it is a little bit small and the pitch is a little bit high. Of course, if you play Persian music you can use it but I would opt for a 12 or a 14 inch frame drum from Remo that has a deeper tone. Are use this drum in a music education setting with a mallet, or simply as a hand drum. It is a good quality drum.
