Can the line out be used for a powered subwoofer?

Yes. I have separate RCA outs going into a powered subwoofer. The other RCA out is routed to a power amplifier. If I remember correctly, I may have used a small, passive RCA mixer for additional routing options.

If paired with power amp which unit controls the volume ?

This T8 tube preamplifier only the main volume control, without the bass treble adjust , so you can check your require to order it,more detail can email(Sandy@aiyima.com),we can suggest you. Thanks
