I wrote a long review and my app crashed so this is a condensed version of it because I can’t go through all that again I think the author did an amazing job at handling the topic of OCD, being honest but never villainizing the condition. Matthew is a wonderful character and we really root for him through the entire novel. Due to trauma, he is unable to leave his home and feels as if he is in a fish bowl (hence the brilliant title). However, when there is a kidnapping, he takes it upon himself to be investigator (he was the last to see the toddler after all), which means he is forced to confront his demons. There are so many wonderful twists and subplots like Matthews fear of going to counselling and his relationship with his friend melody while also trying to brave the germs surrounding him at all times. I think it’s an excellent book to help destigmatize debilitating conditions like OCD and teach children that it’s not simply a case of being “overly organised” or a “perfectionist” Books like this are important and help children learn empathy for others. Great job!

I selected this book for a book club that I run. The youth (ages 11-15) really enjoyed the book and the twists and turns. An unexpected bonus was great insights into the OCD that the main character faces with bravery in the book. I loved the clever writing of the main character and the subtle humour.
