Works well for keeping cats out of a room
We bought this to keep our cats out of a room where there is a door we like to keep it open most of the time for ventilation.Pros:- Fairly easy to install. Thorough directions provided, albeit in tiny font.- Mostly metal construction. Certainly strong enough for keeping our cats out of rooms.- Latch is fairly easy to use. It ha a spring catch for extra security, but we don't need that.- Pressure mounting. If you have a strong door frames or walls you don't have to mount this permanently. Optional screw-mounted cups (and screws) are provided if you do want a more secure attachment.Cons (If there were half stars I might have trimmed half a star for these.):- I can see their design strategy but the latch design is such that the gate will only open one way. Of course if you need it to swing the other way you can simply install it with the other face that direction, but then the hinge is on the other side. Worth noting: If I am standing in the hallway and want to go into a room with the gate in the doorway, if the gate hinge is on the right, the gate swings into the room. I guess one could take a fine saw and trim the plastic latch on the longer side to the same length as the other side so it could open either direction. The gate would then swing either direction but it would then require that you pay attention to line up the gate with the static catch to ensure the latch is engaged. Fortunately in our main room the door and gate swing in unison. I have another room where I was thinking of using a gate and if I had the gate swing into the room I would have to make sure the actual door was open all the way or else the gate would bump into the door.- The latch (and a few other trim parts) is plastic and would be the most likely part prone to breaking. I wish they had used metal. I guess if the plastic breaks and one was only using this gate for pets, one could improvise a latch with a bungee cord or something.Tips and considerations:- Do pay attention to the instructions. The final adjustment of the uppermost pressure points is critical in making sure the latch closes properly.- For shorter openings you will not need the extension piece provided in the box.- One person could install this, but it's a bit easier with two.- The gate on this model does not close automatically (I guess if you wanted it too you could use a bungee cord or spring).- The latch is a tad confusing at first but easy once you know how it works. There's a spring safety feature (the gray, rubbery part) which holds the latch down. It requires a firm grip to slide it sideways. You can do this with one hand but I found I had to grab it at an inconvenient angle (unless you need it I wouldn't bother using it). Pull this back, then lift up on the freed end of the white plastic latch lever. You'll see the two bars holding the gate in place pull back a bit, freeing from the fixed wall piece, letting the gate swing free in one direction.- If using this in a doorway, check your doorknob height. The 30" tall model was tall enough to deter our cats from jumping over it but low enough that it didn't block the doorknob.- The gap between the bars is 2.5". If you need something with a closer gap you could always attach some netting or hardware cloth with zip ties to the metal bars.- There's a catch at the bottom too, but you have to squat down to engage it. It helps stop the gate from rattling if you have something worrying at the gate. (There's two toggles that swing down. They are a bit stiff.)- If you're concerned about denting drywall with the pressure mounting points, you can buy special cups from other vendors that spread the pressure a bit. Alternatively, simply use thin pieces of wood so the mounting pads have the pressure distributed over a wider area.- There is a bar at the bottom that's about 1.5" tall which could be a trip hazard. All short pressure mounted gates have that, so if you are worried about tripping you will have to buy a gate that has permanent wall mounts instead.- This is designed primarily as a baby gate, though the manufacturers do mention using it for pets too. A few reviewers have mentioned strength issues. It is fine for our purposes to keep cats out of a room but I guess if you had a 110 lb. Italian Mastiff constantly throwing itself against the gate then that's a different thing.

Attractive, heavy duty gate, latch & hinges are very smooth, might not be best as a toddler gate
I got this for a pretty unorthodox reason but I'm really glad I did cause it's working out really well for me. I have a litter box for my two cats in the bathroom because it's the easiest place for us to keep it contained....unfortunately I also have two dogs and they will make a huge mess out of it if I don't keep them out of there. For a while I was using a regular baby gate but it was such a pain in the butt to have to step over it every time I wanted to go in and out of the bathroom. I also had to put a box on either side of it so that they could get in and out without having to scale the gate so I not only had to step over the gate, I also had to step over the boxes. And taking the more traditional baby gate up and down over and over again is not a fun task so I was kind of at my wits end. When I got this one I was hoping the bars would be just wide enough that they could fit their heads through but unfortunately they were just a little bit too close together for them to fit.....which ordinarily for most people I'm sure would be a good thing since these are generally used to contain more than one species of creature to one side or the other, haha. After looking at the problem logically for a few minutes I realized that I could actually just mount the gate in the door frame about 5 inches up from the floor so that the cats can pop under it easily but the dogs can't fit through it. And it works PERFECTLY. The frame of the gate is obviously higher off the floor so I have to remember to step over it and I suppose it could be a trip hazard for some, but I haven't had a single problem remembering.Install was actually remarkably easy and it was very well described in the directions - just insert the four pins in the holes at the four corners, hold it in the doorway, and then unscrew the tension cap thingies until the rubber feet are firm against the door. A couple review said it would be better with two people but I did it by myself in 2-3 minutes. I was dumb and didn't even measure my door frame first (Durp!) but even though the item description says 29"-39" opening I was actually able to fit it into the 28 1/2" door frame. Upon first trying it I was actually really afraid it was going to be a bust and not fit even with the tension caps screwed in as far as they would go, but with a little bit of exertion I was able to get it to squeeze in and then only needed to unscrew the caps maybe 1/8" on either side to get it to stay super firm in the door frame. This one stays in MUCH better than the wooden baby gates that I've always used in the past. Even at their tightest with the little notches that the metal piece fits into I could never get nearly as nice, firm fit as this one has. And actually at first I did have it extended too far and the latch kept sticking really obnoxiously but I unscrewed each side just a few turns on and it works very smoothly now. The gate also comes with an extender to make it up to 7 1/2" longer but I obviously didn't need that and ended up just storing it in the closet in case I ever decide to use it in a different area. The latch is extremely easy to use.....which would be a blessing and a curse for most people using it as a baby gate. It does have a little red "lock" that fits over the latch so that it can't be opened, but I can tell you right now my friend's very smart 2 year old would have this sucker figured out in a matter of minutes. I'm not really sure how you would avoid that though because unlike the baby gates that have the closure that can just be put on the other side, this one is right on top and pretty easily reachable. Fortunately for me, no matter how brilliant they are, my dog's don't have thumbs... ;)The metal of the gate itself seems really heavy duty and sturdy and all of the fittings were really nice quality as well. I imagine this gate is going to hold up for a long time and I actually think it looks more attractive than the standard wooden baby gates too. My dogs are pretty annoyed I've blocked their access but the cats and the rest of the family are all happy not to have to deal with that nasty nonsense anymore. :)

Solid and well made.
We bought this gate to keep our dogs out of main house when we are gone. They are restricted to bedroom and back yard (via doggie door) when not home. Our Border Collie could easily jump over it, but he doesn't even try. There is a reason they are called the smartest dog's in the world. lol The gate is strong and easy to install. Looks great too! I think it would be perfect for little kids as well.

Versatile, extendable gate
Exactly as stated in product page. Not a hard installation process fairly easy. Has a double lock which is helpful in Keeping children/pets out, but still easily accessible. Also can size up and down to fit many spaces or to change up locations. Fairly high as well so versatile with pets, children. Quality and appearance seems high, except for for the bolt. When stretching farther does make stability hard. Also makes it partially an eye sore if it maybe something that would bother you.

Good work-rate gate for containing a large, yet passive pet.
Purchase date: 12/2025This is a decently built, extra tall baby gate that provides secure containment for children and pets in doorways and hallways; good value with straightforward installation.* What I LikeSturdy Construction: Metal frame feels reasonably durable and dependable for daily use.Extra Height: At around 36″ tall, it’s taller than standard gates, providing better containment for taller pets who have passive personalities.Walk-Thru Convenience: Easy lever style handle makes opening/closing simple even when hands are full. One hand operation is fairly straightforward.Extendable Fit: Includes a 4″ extension to better match a variety of openings. My 33" doorway didn't need it.Pressure-Mount Design: No drilling required in many indoor spaces, preserving walls and trim.* What Could Be BetterPressure Mount Limitations:Pressure mounting feels secure for many doorways, but in high-traffic areas or at the top of stairs, a hardware mount might feel safer.Design: It's not meant to provide a vice-like super tight mount and overtightening renders the gate latch unusable.Assembly Clarity: Instructions are fine if you pay attention in each step. Figuring out the correct placement of wall cups and extensions may take a bit of trial and error. Not Ideal for Extra-Wide Openings: While extendable somewhat, very wide hallways may require a different model.* Who This Is Best ForFur parents seeking a tall, generally reliable safety gate that’s easy to install and use daily in standard doorways and interior hallways.* Performance & UseIn real world use, this gate performs well in blocking off my kitchen from the living room. The walk-through latch is smooth and intuitive; The extra height gives confidence that large dogs that aren't super invested in getting over it won't try to, but if your large dog is a good jumper, you may have to get creative. Fits most standard openings around 29″ to 36.5″, making it versatile for everyday home use.* ComparisonCompared to basic pressure-mount gates I’ve used previously, this Regalo model feels more robust and is, of course, taller, taller being the best selling point for large pets. If you have a jumper and/or persistent large and heavy pet, though, you may want to consider hardware mounted gates.* VerdictA solid baby gate that strikes a great balance of height, ease of use, and build quality for everyday pet containment. The few minor quirks don’t outweigh its benefits, making it a smart choice for fur parents who want secure containment without the emotional burden (and psychological consequences) of always crating.

(Used to be) an effective good value. Get the Regalo extra wide instead!
UPDATE: PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PRODUCT HAS CHANGED MODELS SINCE I WROTE THE FOLLOWING REVIEW. PLEASE SEE UPDATE 2013 COMMENTS ON THE NEW MODEL AT THE END....We needed a baby gate that was wide enough to put at the bottom of our stairs (about 41 inches), but other extra wide gates were expensive once you had to get the extensions to make them wide enough or you had to hardware mount them to the wall and who wants to screw things into their wall? Or, in our case, the banisters on one side of the stairs. (the gate DOES come with hardware mounts though if you prefer)This gate is great and we feel it's a good value. It operates easily, couldn't have been easier to assemble and attaches securely. Our 5 month old daughter pulls herself up on it and it doesn't budge and just the other day we had a very large 18mo old boy at our house and he was pulling on it and it still didn't move.I think there had been a previous version of this gate where a child had gotten their finger injured in it, but after inspecting the latching system thoroughly and even letting it slam shut on my own finger (it couldn't) I really can't see how anyone child or adult could be injured. So I'd say this version seems to have corrected whatever problem the older model had.A tip for attaching it to a banister on one side, just velcro strap a board to the flat part of the banister so the pressure mounts have something to press against.A note.... the gate will look like it's broken and won't close properly if you hold it up straight out of the box. It's the pressure put on the gate when it's mounted that ensures it closes properly. And, a note for the surprising number of people who have gotten worked up thinking this is a "fake" manufacturer generated review..... it's not. While it's been very entertaining over the years to see people who have the time to get worked up over my review of a baby gate, I have no affiliation with the Regalo company other than as a satisfied customer. :)UPDATE 2013: We're kind of annoyed that Amazon has kept all of the old reviews after Regalo changed product models and now probably most of the reviews you seee here which now no longer apply to this new model. It appears that the "Regalo Easy Open 52 Inch Super Wide Walk Thru Gate" now fits the description of the gate we have that I wrote the original review for and that's the one we're getting after we send this "new model" back. We wanted to get a second one of these gates because they're so great and we got what we thought was the same gate we bought in 2010 when I first wrote the review, but opened the box and nope! Not exactly the same, a newer model (the one pictured) which does NOT have the same operating mechanism and does NOT come with the same number of extensions and thus does not expand as far! The old mechanism was very easy to use one-handed. It was simply a spring loaded thumb lever. Check out the closeup of the latch for the "Regalo Easy Open 52 Inch Super Wide Walk Thru Gate" which appears to still have the old latch mechanism and compare it to the closeup of the "EasyStep Walk Thru" mechanism. This new model, after you slide back the thumb lever, you have to use your other hand to lift up another latch to be able to open the gate. Any parent knows you're going to be carrying kid+stuff a lot of the time and a gate you have to use two hands to open is a deal breaker for us! I should note that my husband has large hands and is technically able to open it one handed by pushing the lever with his thumb (instead of pulling it back as intended) and then using his other fingers on the same hand to kind of nudge the other latch up out of the way but he thinks it's ridiculous and I definitely can't physically do it.

Hardware issues
I think the price of the item is a little on the expensive side for the quality that I got. One side of the gate came bent so the door wouldn't latch until I cranked one of the side anchors screws to offset the bend and make it parallel to the gate door. The side anchors don't thred into the gate like shown in the instructions or the product images so you have to hold them in there until you can pressure fit it to the door. What screws everything to a tight fit is the plastic nut, not the bolt to the gate. Because of this, I would be hesitant mounting the gate off the floor at any height. Downward pressure would jackknife the wall mounts because the fitting is too lose. The gate door itself fits snuggly to the gate and has a double closure ensure no accidently escapes.

Worth It!!
This gate is perfect for keeping my mini poodle out of the kitchen. I got the platinum, and it looks great with the stainless steel in my kitchen. It was easy to assemble and install. My kitchen opening is 48", so the 49" wide gate worked perfectly. I did not use the wall cups, and it is very sturdy without them. My poodle is a jumper, but she can’t put any pressure on the gate because her paws slip through the bars. The gate is doing its job by keeping my puppy out of the kitchen, which is a dangerous place for any dog.

Missing parts and unstable
Unfortunately I received this item incomplete. The extension piece was missing, therefore instead of the described dimension of 92.7 x 2.5 x 91.4 centimeters, the gate I received was only 70cm wide. It was not in original packaging, no manual (fair enough it’s self explanatory) and the missing extension. I was also disappointed to see that it in fact requires to drill wholes for the “mounting cups”. Alternatively if you don’t want to damage your walls you could just use it without but then it’s very wonky and unstable - it would fall by simple opening the gate. Overall the material of the grill itself is good but the closing mechanism is cheap plastic, which looks as if it would break after a few times using. As a result I have returned this item and will continue searching for a better safety gate.

May also be adult proof
Amazing - exactly what we needed. Even some adults cannot open it hehe

Easy to mount and not flimsy
I like it as it’s pretty solid and it looks nice as it blended in with the place. I use it to prevent my dogs from going into the lift.
