Is it ok for boys and girls?

I hesitated on it honestly because it had the tropes of needing a king to wake up a queen. The game is fun, boys and girls both like it. "8 and up" is questionable because I would say 4-7 years old like it the best.

I have a five year old. do you guys think this game is too complicated for her?

Unless your 5 year old can perform mental arithmetic like 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 then I'd say it's too complicated. Everyone who says it's suitable for a 4 year old is with the caveat of having plenty of assistance from the parent.

Actually, I think it's excellent for adults. We played it this weekend with the family and we all loved it. I love board games love the technically geeky ones that take long to read rules and play, etc. And yet, I love this simple game!

What specific math skills does this game teach?

Simple addition to start. The numbers goes from 1-9. But as your child gets more advanced with their math skills, why not throw in addition or subtraction? This game is so fun you can personalize it to challenge your kids. My kindergartener is more comfortable with addition, but I can see in the near future making subtraction a possibility.
