Versatile Pack
I’ll admit that I was hesitant when it came to purchasing a travel bag. I did endless amounts of research, went to stores to see them in person, and then did even more research. Well, I chose right. I LOVED this bag. It came with me on a three week tour of Europe where I put it through the ringer. I flew out on TAP Portugal who would not let me take it as a carry on. When full it was a little large for their taste but the zip off day pack was key. I was able to dethatch it and keep all of my important items with me for the flight while I converted the main bag into luggage mode and sent it on its way. The zip on cover for the straps was important to me because I have in the past had luggage get snagged during transit. On one occasion it was a snowboard bag and almost the entire strap had been ripped from the bag. With the Farpoint’s cover, I was comfortable in knowing that I was in the clear. Once I arrived in Europe, it took only seconds to reattach the day pack and be on my way. Over the course of my trip, the items that I accumulated filled this bag to bursting. I had to kneel on it to get it closed on my final day. I put a lot of stress on the zippers but they are heavy quality. Pros: Front panel access. You don’t realize how important this is until you lack it. My travel companions didn’t have it and watching them try to find something in their bag was a sight. Osprey Packs Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack, Volcanic Grey, Medium/Large Side carry handle. Was nice when you wanted to give the shoulders/hips a rest or just didn’t have the time or need to fully wear the bag. Very comfortable. The bag sat perfectly on my hips and I was able to walk long distances with no discomfort. Locking zippers. People have sticky fingers. Sure, they could always cut the bag but the large percentage of thieves are looking for the quick and discrete score. Being able to put a lock on both bags gave me good piece of mind. Warranty. Osprey calls it the All Mighty Guarantee: Any Reason, Any Product, Any Era. This is huge. I beat the hell out of my bag(not intentionally) and it held up but knowing that it would be replaced free of charge if it ripped or a zipper burst puts the mind at ease. It also shows the faith that they put in their product. Cons: Color. Volcanic grey was my favorite of the available colors but I wasn’t in love with it. There should have been more color options. I’d have preferred a true black. Size. It was BARELY too large to be used as my carry on. I always sleep easier on the plane when I have all of my stuff with me. Outer net pockets. They were a touch small. When my bag was filled to the brim, especially during the end of the trip, there was very little that I could fit inside of them.

Great Travel Backpack - Highly Recommended!
My wife and I each used this backpack on a two week trip to Scandanavia and Iceland. The backpacks passed the test and are great! The best feature of these backpacks is that they're front-loading. I have an older top-loading backpacking pack that I used to use for international travel and it was such a pain to dig through my stuff from the top. With the Farpoint 55, you can lay it down like a suitcase and get to your stuff easily and quickly. I wanted a L/XL pack, but went with a S/M and it's surprisingly spacious. I overpacked and in the main pack I was able to fit 8 shirts, four pants, two shorts, a sweater, a pair of shoes and flip flops, one sweatpants, one baseball cap, one beanie, my toiletries, many pairs of socks and underwear, and some small electronics. I used packing cubes to keep things organized. In the small daypack, I fit my DSLR in its carrier, along with smaller items like an iPad mini, sunglasses, magazines and a book. I tended to wear my daypack on my front instead of attaching it to the main pack just to maintain a good weight balance. The daypack stayed on my shoulders well when I wore it in front. When I did attach the daypack to the main pack, I felt really off-balance, but that's probably because I overpacked. I never felt too much pressure on my shoulders when walking with the packs. I just tightened the straps to be really secure on my waist, chest, and shoulders, and the different pressure points helped hold up the weight. My wife and I did a few 20-30 minute walks while wearing the packs and it wasn't bad at all (disclaimer: we are in really good physical condition). We were able to take these packs as carry-ons on all our flights. We flew Virgin America, Icelandair, and Norwegian Air, and the packs fit just fine on all planes. They won't fit in smaller regional planes though, but as long as the plane is an A320 or 737 at the least, you won't have a problem. Not one airline official or flight attendant stopped us to question the size of our packs. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the exterior pouches on the daypack need a lot of improvement. The "elastic" at the top of the pouches don't hold things in well. My wife wanted better waist straps for support since she also used to use a backpacking pack for traveling, but after tightening all of her straps she didn't have much of a problem. As for quality, so far I haven't noticed any threading coming apart, and the zippers have been fine. Overall I was really satisfied with the Farpoint 55. The price has even gone down about $25 since I bought them a few months ago. I'll be taking it on two more trips this summer and if anything changes, I'll post an update.

Good for hostel backpacking but maybe not the best for outdoor trekking
I used this on a month long trip to Chile where I primarily stayed in hostels. I also used it for three weeks when I was sent to another state for work. I got it onto planes no problem by removing the little zip-off backpack part. At home I use the zip-off backpack constantly as my main day pack for hiking. Overall this backpack is great. There were some potential downsides which are worth mentioning since there are other Osprey backpacks that might fit your needs better. First, there were some times in airports where I wished this backpack had some wheels, because it was quite heavy, and sometimes I didn't feel like putting on the backpack to walk somewhere. Second, it lacks pockets on the waist strap that you find on some other models. There were some times where I was walking long distances and I wished I had some waist strap pockets like I saw on the backpacks of some other travelers. Third, there is not a ton of padding on the shoulders. It's still quite comfortable and fine for city travel, but some other packs I've tried had more padding for long-distance treks. This is certainly a nice backpack. Mine still basically looks new and nothing has broken or worn out. Its features seem specifically made for hostel backpacking, mostly through cities. It could be used for outdoor trekking but I think other Osprey backpacks might serve the outdoor traveler a bit more. It gets five stars because it's a great backpack, but make sure you know what you're buying and maybe consider other packs if you're focusing more on outdoor trekking.

Love it! Bough the S/M -First backpack and I ...
Love it! Bough the S/M -First backpack and I will defintely be using for a lifetime! Bought for a 9day Europe trip and it was a lifesaver! The day pack is awesome! I was able to use to venture out during day and keep wallet, cards, spare change, charger, phone, sunglasses, hand sanitizer, cardigan, toilet wipe pack and still had space to pack in the souvenirs we picked up along the way. The backpack itself fits a lot! I packed in it (using cubes) 7 jeans, 2 jean shorts, 4 pj' pants, 15 shirts, 10 underwear, 4 bras,7 pair of socks, 1 fleece sweater, 2pair of shoes (flip flops and flats) toiletry bag. It seemed full then, but still managed to pack about 8-10 small souvenirs on the way back. The straps are great, didn't cut in for the weight I carried (maxed out at 44lbs) without day pack. The waist straps do help greatly to distribute the weight to hips and of shoulders. Wish it was a bit more "breathable" on the back but to it's defense it was a bit humid and we walked alot with these packs. It took a beating, as we were on 2 trains, 4 flights, subways, buses and to and from hotels. No tears, snags or any sort of quality issues. Also I carried on all my flights without issue, granted I did not put it in the "standard/max baggage bin" it would have not fit, No Way! I removed daypack and carried it as my "personal/hand bag" and stowed away the harness/straps and had no issues, also fit way better in the overheads than most "approved" carry on wheelie bags :/ See photo- this is packed to the max but without the daypack. if I had a negative comment/issue is when the daypack and backpack are both packed, it a bit hard to zipper daypack onto the big pack, not impossible but does take some muscle and coordination.

Great pack!!
A week after my awesome trip to Thailand I felt it was my duty to give credit where it is due, and this bag deserves a lot of praise! The detatchable daypack really provided me with a sense of security during my trip, allowing me to have my important documents (in waterproof housing) with me at all times being that I was staying mostly in hostels with little security. Yet the pack was durable and light weight enough that it didn't become a nuisance or something to worry about. I was in Thailand during Songkran Festival, the local New Year which has turned into the biggest water fight in the world, spanning 3 days! The material of this pack is slightly water resistant and did defend my clothes from getting wet from small amounts of water thrown on it for a short period during transit. The extreme heat of Thailand probably was to thank for that as well though lol. My day pack did end up getting soaked through at one point and quickly dried out for the next days use! I cannot recommend this pack enough for its versatility and durability, alone! Another thing I wanted to touch on was the ability to use this pack as a carry on while flying. I have seen a lot of debate about the issue and while I cannot speak for all airlines, the two Asian companies I flew with never even gave my pack a 2nd look! I flew with EVA Air and Air Asia and the M/L pack fit just fine in each compartment. I did keep the day pack on me as my hand luggage. (see picture) Hope this helps!

Great pack but missing a few key features (Maybe Osprey will see this)
I've been a long time supporter of Osprey and have traveled the world using my Talon 44. I love my Talon for how light weight the pack is and the 44 liters forces me to pack only what I honestly need for my entire trip. I don't like checking bags when flying, save for possibly on the return trip when I want to lighten my load of all the treasures I found along the way. With my old set up for air travel I had collapsible bags for 2 things, the day pack backpack and and a duffel for that return checked bag I mentioned. I also take a collapsible water bottle that worked really well as long as you are in an area where you can refill. There were 2 main reasons why I "upgraded" to this Farpoint 55 set up for air travel, the luggage style opening to load (versus the top load of my Talon) and the added day pack that snaps in. I have always used the front bag across my chest for my important personal items and having a way to lock that in will be great since when you are really moving and shaking through an area the shoulder straps tend to slide down (I'm not too broad shouldered). To hit on the luggage style loading, that's a huge plus. Trying to rummage through a top load bag a few times a day becomes a repack everyday if you are traveling to new locations a lot. The luggage style allows you to see everything without needing to move everything. The ability to put the straps away is great. There has been a few times on smaller flights that I had to check my Talon 44. I had it down to a science on how to tie all the straps together to help protect them on the belts. However, I have and a plastic clip snap off and I am assuming it was caught in a belt somewhere along the way. If you have never owned an Osprey, they offer the most amazing warranty. If something rips, tears, breaks...they fix it for free. If they cannot fix it they replace it at no cost to you. That goes with all of their packs no matter the size or how old they are. If you are considering the Ozone Duplex or Porter lines (the 2 air travel ultra light options that generally get mentioned in the same conversation as the Farpoint line) : Make sure you try them on before you commit to them. Make sure you add weight to them to see where the pack sits. Consider where you will be walking, is it going to be hilly, a lot of stairs, only airport to hotel or air bnb, walking miles...my friends and I feel the Ozone Duplex and the Porter doesn't sit well with weight. They are wider versus longer and the middle back takes on a lot more stress than the Farpoint. The Farpoint is just enough longer to distribute the weight much more evenly across the shoulders, mid back and lower back areas. I felt a bit more tipsy with the wider packs and for walking stairs or any hilly areas that would become a bit of an issue. Now to the few things I wish Osprey would consider adding to the Farpoint to make it even better: The day pack is really great with the soft micro fleece material liner for your electronic protection. The bag has enough space for a day carry. However, I want more dedicated loops to add carabiners. I want to clip on things I do not want to stop and open my bag for, especially if I am on a hike. I want a few loops on the back and on the shoulder straps. The 2 water bottle holders are a bit annoying as to where they are placed all the way on the back of the bag. I cannot easily get to them without removing my pack. I know the older model of the Farpoint 55 had a earphone hole at the top of the bag that people would hijack for a makeshift water bladder hose. Why isn't there a thin waterproof section for a water bladder and a hole at the top for the hose? Most of the people buying this set up travel light and do outdoor activities while traveling no matter if they are going for business or pleasure. Osprey being a trekking company has missed on this day pack in a few big yet easy fix ways. I have the same request for the 40 liter portion of the bag, give us more carry loops. Sure I can use the straps, but now I'm putting more pressure on parts that were not specifically designed to be carry loops. There are 4 dedicated loop locations on the back, give us a couple on the front and a few small zipper sections on the hip pads for little things like gum, chap stick, a few bucks... The only other wish is that there were more choices in color. I love my citron yellow Talon because it is easy to see in a crowd. Red and especially black are 2 colors that are so common that if you do check your bag that it could be a bit more work seeing yours versus all the other bags. I will put a few specific colored locks or carabiners on the bag to make mine stand out.

Comfortable and Lightweight
I bought this for a week-long trip to Iceland because it looked like I could carry it on if I zipped off the 15L attached pack. I was able to carry it on without challenge, but on smaller aircraft had to gate check while on larger aircraft (767) had to turn it sideways to fit in the overhead bin. On the way home, with gifts, it was stuffed and heavy so I decided to check it once I got back in the states for the last domestic leg of my itinerary. I flew American Airlines domestically to the connecting US international airport, where I picked up IcelandAir. I’m a tall female (68 inches) with a long torso so the men’s version is fine for me and with the adjustability it was comfortable and easy to use. The full open zipper (rather than stuffing the thing from the top) made getting to my gear easy without always having to unpack then repack. The zip-off pack was convenient and also easy to get things into and out of without necessarily having to unpack and then repack to get a specific item out. It was a great day pack on the trip. The whole thing is low profile compared to other packs and especially “book” backpacks. I have the reddish colored version and checking it got it a little dirty, but spot cleaning was easy and it held up (no scratches, picks, or tears). I looked at the smaller version (40L) but I’m glad I got the 55L instead with the judiciously selected winter gear I needed and saving a little room for gifts (I squashed an Icelandic sweater into it for the way home). I recommend this backpack. It’s roomy (all things considered), and allows flexibility.

Here’s to many more trips
This bag has been with me on many trips out of the country, it’s comfy to wear obviously, but the big handle on the side fits nicely in my hand and makes it just as easy to suite case carry! The detachable day bag is such a great addition. I’ve yet to have any type of tear or damage show itself, overall I’m happy either way the quality of the bag.
