why does mine chirp intertmittently

If it is a 9 volt battery, it may not be seated correctly.  See the video on the first alert website, and be prepared to do some hard pushing to get the 9V battery to engage.  I had 3 9V units, and 2 of the 3 seemingly required excessive pressure to get the batteries to engage.  When I first thought I had the batteries installed by just closing the door, the unit chirped until I got the batteries shoved on hard.

Question 2

Will the unit work without a bettery in it?

I'm putting these units into rentals.  Will this work without a battery in it?  If the battery runs low, the tenants usually take the whole unit down rather than change the battery - rendering the whole concept useless.  This is the reason I would like to invest in "plug-in" units.  However, somewhere it said it will chirp if battery is missing.  Please clarify.  I need a unit that will be effective, even without a battery installed.

Does the monitor plug directly into the wall socket or is there an electric cord?

No cord. The alarm plugs in directly to the outlet.

The following info is verbatim from the instructions that came with the unit: Actuation of the Alarm indicates the presence of carbon monoxide which can kill you.  In other words, when our CO Alarm sounds, you must not ignore it! The following is not verbatim but a summary of regulatory requirements.  Levels of CO that cause an alarm: at 400 ppm of CO, it must alarm between 4 and 15 minutes; at 150 ppm of CO, it must alarm between 10 and 50 minutes; at 70 ppm of CO, it must alarm between 60 and 120 minutes.  The unit is designed not to alarm when expose to a constant level of 30 ppm for 30 days.  Hope this has answered your question....from housewife1.
