Not a Box

I teach pre-k and preschool with a few 2 and 5 year olds mixed in. They love this book.As a teacher and adult, I also love it. Its imaginative, creative, and funny. It's nice and short in terms of word and page count, but you can easily turn one reading of it into a whole day's (probably week's) worth of lessons and activities.It worked especially well as an introduction to lessons and activities that involve boxes (of which there are SO MANY). There are also easy ways to turn it into a fun guessing game and to turn it into many other possible interactive reading experiences.I think it's also the kind of book that helps grown-ups see things from kids' perspectives.I would highly, highly recommend this book.

Preschool classroom loved the book and activities with boxes

This is such a fun and creative book. My 4 year old absolutely loves it and we've read it so many times that he has it memorized. He gets excited and tells me what the next page is going to say before we even turn it.One of my favorite things about this book is how much it has encouraged his imagination. Now when he sees an empty box around the house, he immediately starts pretending it's something else. A spaceship, a race car, a castle, you name it. It's amazing how one simple story has inspired so much creative play. This has definitely become one of our favorite books to read together.

Nothing better than the look on a young readers face when you see it light up to this (future?) modern classic. The style and brevity is on par with perfect just to spark the imagination.

This book 'Not a Box' is not just a super cute, but absolute masterpiece for sparking a child's imagination. I love it.

Bedtime Story-Not A BoxWhat a wonderful and imaginative story. Prefect for his grade level too. One line repetition though out the book.He was VERY excited about this book.... Lots of discussion while being read to.I remember the lure of a box, especially those wonderfully long refridgerator sized boxes. This book evokes that magic of the imagination. Even the cover of the book mimics it. It is brown paper with no dust jacket, on the front it proclaims in weight in oz. On the back a red arrow points out "this end up".As the story opens and the reader flips through the publication and title page, a small bunny spots and tugs away a box that it has found. Now we see the bunny sitting quietly within his treasure as someone (perhaps the reader) asks, "Why are sitting in a box?"A turn of the page and it's the same bunny in the same box, but now red lines have appeared around them to sketch out a fabulous racing car.The opposite page is now bright red and at the bottom of it sit the words, "It's not a box."Turn the page and now the bunny is standing on top of the box.When asked why, the red lines have turned the box into an alpine peak with the bunny at the crest of the summit. The imagination of children is perfectly captured in this book. So simple, yet so powerful! We were gifted this copy and have purchased a hardcover for our nephew.

I love that this is a board book. I love the simple drawings, I love the simple text that invites a depth of thinking. I love the creative inventions that the rabbit thinks about for the box. It invites kids to be inventive, and curious, and to play deeply.I teach 3-5 year olds

This book is so perfect for primary aged kids. Mine loved it- loved the repetitiveness of it and the imagination behind it. Simple yet beautiful/thought provoking. What every children’s book should be.
