Bolshoi Ballet: Don Quixote

This video is a good example of an older version of the ballet. I saw a recent version of the Bolshoi in Orange county last year,They brought the house down and it was a full house too (+3000)I was very happy to see the variation of 2 ballerinas with guitars later joined by a third ballerina, The only other video of this variation i know of is from the kiev state ballet,(On laserdisc from image)Since it is an old video it is also interesting to compare this recording with recordings made recently and see the improvement in picture quality and also in the dancing like higher extensions etc,

rare dvd of an excellent bolshoi dancer rarely seen abroad whose career was partially eclipsed by 'bigger' names at the bolshoi. well worth seeing.

Some of the dancing is lovely but it is VERY easy to spot who slept their way into a spot. Also, this version does not follow the plot at all, parts of it are terribly lit, and iconic variations are omitted.

Don Quixote is my favorite ballet. I have seen about 20 different productions (and some of them - dozens of times) - this is the worst. Pavlova is a super ballerina but she is alone in this falsified Bolshoi production. It is not the Bolshoi theater. The performance is given in some 3-rate assembly hall. The settings are of the so-called "gastroli type" or "tour type" and very bad at that. They are used when a theater is on a tour.The highest price for this disc should be $5.00 : $4.99 for Pavlova, one cent - for the rest of the ballet.

I was dissappointed

This is a live recording, made in 1978, of a performance by the Bolshoi Ballet. The production was made by Yevgeny Macheret who used various earlier choreography including Petipa's and Gorsky's original. It looks like the immediate predecessor to the Bolshoi's current version by Alexei Fadeyechev.Nadezhda Pavlova as Kitri/Dulcinea is a very good and charming dancer. She has a good rapport with Gordeev (her husband in real life) who dances the role of Basilio. The soloists and supporting cast are also very good indeed. They all bring out the atmosphere of southern Spain that Petipa would have experienced as a young dancer. It is not surprising that the audience is often enthusiastic.Due to the age of the recording, however, picture and sound quality is below average by today's standard. Also, the stage is sometimes lit too dimly, obscuring the dancer's (particularly Basilio's) movements.Finally, there is an excellent bonus in the form of archive film clips of Maya Plisetskaya as Kitri/Dulcinea, made in 1964. Plisetskaya's dancing is superb, and one easily realizes why she was such a legend. Her pas de deux with Maris Liepa, another legendary Bolshoi dancer, in the wedding scene in Act IV is exuberant. The film clips are in black and white and the sound is poor. Despite these drawbacks, it is a marvellous addition to the full-length version.

Ce DVD, compte tenu de sa piètre qualité technique, serait très peu recommandable sans le fascinant bonus qui l'accompagne : trente minutes d'un Don Quichotte filmé en 1964 avec la légendaire Maïa Plissetskaïa, presque quadragénaire alors, mais stupéfiante de technique et de puissance. Cette demi-heure en noir et blanc contient notamment toutes les variations de Kitri, dansées devant un public en délire total, dont les hurlements ininterrompus couvrent presque l'orchestre. La performance est en effet enthousiasmante : la ballerine montre une énergie inépuisable, et la célèbre variation des castagnettes (avec ses célèbres sauts emblématiques du rôle), prise sur un tempo infernal, est difficilement surpassable.Le plat de résistance est moins convaincant. Dans les années 1970, il me semble que le Bolchoï était un peu en panne d'inspiration et de moyens, et les spectacles enregistrés pendant ces années semblent toujours un peu poussiéreux. Ici, les décors se réduisent à d'immenses toiles peintes, que l'immensité de la scène moscovite permet heureusement de rendre spectaculaires. La qualité technique de l'enregistrement télévisé est par ailleurs médiocre, et carrément déplorable pour les scènes peu éclairées (le campement des gitans, la scène de la taverne).La chorégraphie est assez différente de celle de Saint-Petersbourg, popularisée hors de Russie par Baryshnikov ou Noureev. Le faux suicide de Basilio a lieu avant le rêve de Don Quichotte ; il y a trois danses gitanes (qui se ressemblent un peu trop), et une danse clownesque et un peu vulgaire entre trois matelots et une fille en short (avec une musique anachronique). Globalement, je n'aime pas beaucoup cette chorégraphie, peu cohérente à tous égards, mais qui semble hélas adoptée par toutes les troupes moscovites...La petite Nadejda Pavlova fut une des premières danseuses à réussir les grands écarts dans toutes les positions, et notamment ici dans les célèbres portés (au bout d'un seul bras) de son partenaire et mari Vyacheslav Gordeev. Vedette du Bolchoï dans les années 70 et 80, elle est techniquement brillante, mais assez peu puissante, et semble se fatiguer assez vite. Par ailleurs, elle manque un peu d'abattage, et sa Kitri ne domine pas le plateau autant qu'il se devrait.Dans l'ensemble, les solistes sont excellents : on est au Bolchoï. (Et ceux qui trouvent les danseuses trop maigres seront ravis ici de voir la reine des Dryades remplacée par la reine des hippopotames : on se croirait dans « Fantasia » de Walt Disney.) Mais la piètre qualité des décors et de l'image ne fait pas un bien beau spectacle.

The ballet is beatiful, but it would have been better if iit were HD.

１９７８年の映像ですから、ソ連時代のモスクワのボリショイ劇場の雰囲気を味わうことが出来る貴重な記録だと思います。町の人々の群舞に３２人も並ぶと壮観ですし、有名な白馬とロバも登場し、広い、大きい、天井が高い、さすがボリショイと思わせられます。酒場の場面にジャズっぽいリズムのコミックダンスがあり、終幕キトリが中央に座して騎士の姿になったバジルとドン・キホーテが決闘する（バジルが勝つ）という演出、いずれもペルミ・バレエの１９９２年日本公演のＤＶＤにもありますので、このあたりが伝統的なゴルスキー演出なのかもしれません。オーケストラの演奏が踊りよりも先に進むので、曲が終わってからボーズが終わるところが間々あり、曲に追いつこうと動きがバタバタするところもあって、これは劇場が閉まる時間に合わせて急いでいたのかしらなどと勝手な想像を廻らしてしまいます。さらに古い１９６４年のプリセツカヤ映像がボーナスで入っていて、バレエの歴史の研究が出来そうな気になります。
