Olympus E-5 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

I had been using an Olympus E510 for the last 5 years and wanted to upgrade the camera, I am a published photographer but its not my main source of income. I thought about changing systems as the Canon or Nikon's out there looked a good way to go for someone working at my level. However after 5 years I also had a serious investment in Olympus glass and to switch would have meant a huge outlay. Maybe 3 times the cost of this camera! Truth was I really liked the Olympus system, the lens are amazing and they offer to me a very detailed and attractive image quality. They are also very easy to carry around all day. Furthermore dispite the critic of the Olympus system I knew my way around the E510 and the E5 has a very similar albeit more advanced Menu. So I decided to stick with Olympus until I could afford to switch or I could claim the tax back as a professional photographer. Having said that the E5 has proved so far to have been an excellent choice. My photography has moved up to a new level, so much more is possible. The AF is stunning, it claims to be one of the fastest systems and it has certainly proved itself very capable with a Pro-lens coupled with Olympus's SWD system it is amaziingly fast but even with other kit it snaps into focus very quickly. Lots of my work is landscape photography and even using manual focous it is quick and easy to adjust. For the landscape photographer it also has a very useful sprit level. The sensor which has come in for a lot of flack is incredible, Olympus have managed to squeese so much from it! My pictures using the E5 are incredibly detailed, I mainly shoot RAW and the upgrade in picture quality is stunning. Even at high ISO they are sharp. The tilting live view is very useful allowing you to get interesting shots, recently at a Wedding I used it to get overhead images of the reception. Its also great for composition at ground level. Don't let the weight either put you off! It is no heavier than the Canon or Nikon's in the same price bracket and they are not weather sealed. It also fits into your hand very well even with a 50 - 200 mm telephoto mounted on the body. I have only been using the E5 for just over 2 months but it has proved for me the best upgrade. It is an incredible camera and everytime I use it I am discovering something else I like about it but having said all that it is expensive. If I did not have such an investment in the Olympus system I maybe would had switched?? But having used it I don't think I would, it is that good a camera and I am very pleased with it but if your just starting out on your first SLR I would give it a lot of thought, there are cheaper SLR's out there which are just as good. So to sum up, a great upgrade for existing Olympus users!

Despite the price and weight this is an excellent and worthwhile camera which along with the unbeatable Zuiko lenses makes a really good system for a practical photographer. Outstanding image quality up to ISO 800, good IQ at 1600 at 50% crop factor and usable images up to (just about) ISO 6400 if you expose to the right and do a little work in post on noise reduction. Excellent dust-busting in Oly cameras means that in three years of using other Oly DSLRs I have never had to clean a sensor. Very good in-camera image stabilisation for any lens mounted gives you good low-light ability especially with the pro and top grade lenses. With those lenses the system is high-performing, very weatherproof, cold-proof, robust and reliable. Battery life is good. Olympus has improved the autofocusing performance, fastest in class, by extending its performance in low light unassisted. Sweet to hold and good to operate, with extensive customisation options. The out of camera jpegs are outstandingly good for speed and convenience, and if you shoot RAW then with Zuiko lenses you will have excellent detail and pretty much edge-to-edge sharpness even at widest apertures. I haven't used the HD video capability. While a few other manufacturers' products may beat any one of Olympus' characteristics by a short head, the overall system is up with the best or better. I'm not an Olympus fanboy but was critical of my last, lesser, Olympus DSLR. This one, however, is the goods and I very much doubt it will be the last four-thirds camera unless they can beat its all-round spec (including fast focusing) with micro four-thirds.

First thiings first this is NOT the body for you if shooting video is a priority. However for still work it seems unbeatable to me. Specifically because:- The 4/3 system delivers significantly smaller lighter lenses than the manufacturers who rushed into digital with camera bodies whose sensors ape the size of a 35mm frame, unlike Olympus who started with a clean sheet of paper. And Zuiko lenses are exceptional. The viewfinder beats every other DSLR I have tried. It is bright and informative and is a genuine 100% representation of the captured frame. Autofocus is fast, accurate and versatile. The controls are well placed and out of the box allow a sensational degree of control with the camera to the eye. The level of customisation on offer is extraordinary. Many professional reviewers have called the menu system over complicated - well smell the roses guys, DSLR are extremely complicated pieces of equipment, (is there is any single person in any of the serious camera companies who truly understands every process and mechanical function going on inside), and I can't think of a relevant featurewhich cannot be accessed and managed. The E5 feels incredibly well built and is a joy to use. I was talking to a technician at a very high end inkjet print shop a while ago and he told me two things which mark out the E5 from the persepctive of those who regularly print out very large prints: Firstly you never see sensor dust marks, and second Olympus users never complain about how much work they have to do on their images because the cameras are so accurate.

Certainly not in the "as New category" or even "very good".The two main reasons were, obvious signs of wear on the body, nasty deep scratch on the screen & the incorrect battery & charger were supplied..the batteries & charger supplied were for the E3, NOT the E5, which although they work ok are not as powerful as the correct ones- BLM-5 & BCM-5....so far I have found no problems with the functional aspect but I do feel that the camera was overpriced & that the description was somewhat misleading,

Not very good at this review thing.... But here goes. I've used my E5 for over a year now and am very impressed! before I made the decision to upgrade from my Olympus E520 I was toying with going over to Canon, but I resisted and went with the E5. Now this camera does have a few issues with high ISO with 800 being the highest without noise creeping into the image. Don't let this put you off..... I have used ISO 1600 and still managed to get very usable images. Sure, both Canon & Nikon have cleaner images at these high ISO settings but there is something special about this camera that makes it a pure pleasure to use.... it becomes a part of you. Image quality is stunning with Olympus glass, producing a wonderful punchy but natural colour rendition of every scene taken. (Hard to explain) Build quality is second to none....it's simply one of the best built in it's class..... weather sealed and pretty bomb proof! All buttons and dials are perfectly placed and the flip screen is excellent. The menu system my take some getting used to and there are a few users who don't appear to like it, but for me I have no problems at all and find it simple to operate and pretty logical. I do realise the 4/3rd system is a risky place to put your hard earned cash at the moment and the likes of Canon & Nikon are the ones most people are going with..... BUT, if you want a camera to take images and not snaps (though you can). A camera that is a pleasure to use and rewards you with stunning results..... I can recommend the Olympus E5 without hesitation. Do I regret choosing this over the others..... No! not one bit and if Olympus keep their promise and release a farewell 4/3rd's SLR.... I'll be the first in line. Posted a few images above.... hope you like them!

Es würde zu weit gehen hier zu erklären wieso sich jemand für das FourThirds System entscheiden sollte. Für die meisten der Fotografie-Gewohnheiten gibt es mehrere Gründe. Ich erwähne hier nur flüchtig zwei algemeine Gründe denn über die FourThirds Endscheidung berechtigt sich auch der Kauf der E-5. Sie ist nämlich das zur Zeit einzige auf Profi-Niveau DSLR Gehäuse was produziert wird. Diese Tatsache führt vielen in die Irre denn sie glauben das es um ein System am aussterben handelt. Dabei handelt es sich nach allen Zeichen um das am meisten Zukunft sicheres Digitales Foto-System und das könnte einer der Gründe für die FourThirds Endscheidung sein. Das E-System von Olympus unter dem Überbegriff vom FourThirds Format wo auch mehrere Firmen rumwerkeln, ist außerdem ein System was von vorne ran für die digitale Fotografie konzipiert wurde. Das microFourThirds ist die Spiegellose Variation davon und gleichzeitig eine Garantie für die Nachhaltigkeit, den Fortbestand und die Weiterentwicklung dieser Technologie. Wer also das FourThirds System und somit die E-5 als ein Totes Pferd oder als Schwan-Lied des Systems betrachtet der ist einfach vom Gewöhnten in seine Denkweise gefesselt und hat nicht verstanden wohin es mit der Foto-Technologie geht. Der andere Grund sich für FourThirds und die E-5 zu entscheiden sind die hervorragende Objektive die da zur Verfügung stehen. Man kann quasi blind zu einem der FT Objektive zugreifen und dabei sicher sein das man viel mehr als ein Minimum an optische Qualität zur Verfügung bekommen hat. Seit langer Zeit ist keine neue Optik für FT raus gekommen und das wird auch als der Tod des Systems missverstanden. Dabei steht bereits (sehr wahrscheinlich) die größte Auswahl an speziell für digital berechnet und konzipierte Objektive die ein DSLR Kamera System anbietet. Und deren Preis bei den Pro und Top-Pro Optiken steigt anstatt im laufe der Zeit zu fallen. (Ich kenne das, weil ich die Preise seit 2008 als ich meine erste E-420 gekauft habe beobachte). Und genau dieser sogenannter "Objektiv-Park" von Olympus Zuiko Digital (!) Objektiven, wo viel Arbeit und Investitionen reinstecken, wird nicht so einfach Überbord geworfen. Mir ist es klar dass nach der jetzt alleinstehende E-5 immer eine Kamera geben wird die diese Optische Leistungsträger unterstützen wird. Auch wenn sie keinen Spiegel vielleicht haben wird. Man muss bei diesen Objektiven deutlich machen dass wenn Blende f:2 angeboten wird, dann darf man die auch ohne abblenden wirklich benützen. Sie steht nicht nur da, damit man die auf der Beschriftung erwähnen kann. Ich besitze einige davon und weiß wovon ich rede. Ich habe also bis hier versucht zwei Grunde für die E-5 zu beschreiben: 1. Zukunftsicherheit, Nachhaltigkeit, Fortbestand und Weiterentwicklung der Technik an der man investiert. 2. Hervorragende Objektive natürlich gibt es mehr Und für das Gehäuse selbst? Ich sag nur dass es auch ein Irrtum ist sie mit der E-3 (das vorgegangene Gehäuse-Modell) zu verwechseln allein weil sie nicht viel anders aussieht. Die kann mehr und damit meine ich nicht die Pixel-Anzahl. Manche Objektive wie das 50mm f2 Zuiko Digital und sogar das 35mm Makro Zuiko Digital, fokussieren viel schneller als bei der E-3. Der Sensor erreicht eine bessere Detailgenauigkeit und die ISO Einstellung darf man ein bisschen mehr aufheben als früher bei den anderen Gehäusen. (1600 ISO liefert noch brauchbare Ergebnisse). Video kann sie nebenbei auch aufnehmen. Das schwenkbares Display hinten hat eine bessere Auflösung und erlaubt das Beurteilen der Bilder deutlich einfacher. Die Qualität des Suchers der die Kamera so groß machen lässt, ähnlich wie bei der E-3, erlaubt das manuelle Fokussieren so wie man es bei analogen Zeiten vielleicht gewöhnt ist. Ich gebe meine uneingeschränkte Empfehlung und höre hier auf. Einschränkungen gibt es sehr wohl: Der Continuous Autofokus bei der Kamera muss gelernt werden. Er ist nicht so wie man sich das vorstellen würde. Ich selber benützte ihn äußerst selten aber das liegt nicht nur an den Themen die ich fotografiere sondern an den Fakt dass ich die C-AF Einstellung nicht wirklich als Fotograf geübt habe. Und wenn ich das mache dann bin ich mit den Ergebnissen nicht zufrieden. Soweit ich mitbekommen habe ist es aber bei den anderen Marken auch nicht besser mit Ausnahme manche Nikon Kameras die da technisch einen Vorteil haben sollen. Aber. beim Single Autofokus also S-AF ist die Kamera (besonders mit den SWD Objektiven) außerordentlich schnell. Die Kombination mit dem ZD 50-200mm SWD ist ein Erlebnis. Bis vor kurzem galt auch die Kombination der E-3 und E-5 mit dem ZD 12-60mm SWD als der schnellster Autofokus überhaupt. (Mittlerweile könnte er vielleicht schon von Olympus PEN Kameras überholt sein). Vielleicht habe ich auch deswegen bis jetzt mich nicht um das erlernen der C-AF gekümmert. Wer immer wieder, wieso auch immer, mit ISO 3200 und 6400 oder sogar 12800 fotografieren möchte, sollte nicht so eine Kamera kaufen, das sollte klar sein. Die Vorteile des relativ kleineren Sensors verwandeln sich bei hohe ISO Einstellungen in Rauschen. Um in solch düstere Lichtverhältnisse fotografieren zu können muss man bei dieser Art von Kameras an lichtstarke Objektiven investieren. So kann man diese Beschränkung mit Bewahrung einer hoher Qualität am Ergebnis ausgleichen. Und das ist möglich nur wenn man für die geeignete Objektive Geld ausgibt. Mit Ausnahme das 50mm ZD Makro was ebenso eine voll-taugliche anwendbare f:2 Blende hat und relativ günstiger als die anderen zu bekommen ist, haben alle andere Lichtstarke hochqualitative Objektiven, wie überall, ihren Preis. Dann kann man mit solchen Objektiven tatsächlich mit f:2 auch fotografieren dabei Scharf abbilden und eine Schärfentiefe von f:4 verglichen mit Kleinbildformat, haben. Aber man sollte nicht vergessen: Licht, nicht das Apparat, ist das Hauptelement in der Kunst der Fotografie. Wer die hohen ISO Zahlen braucht nur um diese Tatsache zu umgehen, der wird nie befriedigt, egal wie hoch gepuscht werden kann.

THIS is literally THE pinnacle of the FOUR THIRDS standard. This camera is ahead of Olympus own ability to fully support its features. One thing it lacks is built in WiFi. But, the USB is blazingly fast. It uses SD cards now as well as Compact Flash. And it is FAST. The E-5 has all the goodies of the E-3 plus a large handful of more goodness. IF you are "stuck" with a kit full of Full 4/3 lenses and accessories, and you don't have E-5 in the kit, you might want to find one! The camera I received is amazing. I expected a Used camera. Means scuffs and scratches, odd caps and covers missing. Nope. ALL there and all perfect. Pristine. A Joy to use!

以前からEー5を使っており、すでに少し時代遅れになったモデルですが使い慣れており、今後Eー5の購入は難しくなると考えこのEー5ボディを購入した。外観においても、性能においても全く問題がなく、安く、良い製品を入手できました。

Ich muss ja sagen, dass ich mir durchaus bewusst bin, dass der Kundenkreis von Olympus sich langsam ausdünnt. Zu übermächtig scheinen die Konkurrenten (speziell Nikon, Canon). Allerdings hat Olympus erst kürzlich gezeigt, dass die Firma mit der OM-D sich ganz schnell wieder ganz oben im Markt platzieren und die Konkurrenz im Bereich der spiegellosen Systemkameras um LÄNGEN schlagen kann. Ich habe die E-5 nun lange genug getestet, um mir hier ein Urteil erlauben zu können. Außerdem denke ich, dass es für viele Kunden hilfreich ist, auch einmal eine neuere Rezension zu einem nicht mehr brandaktuellen Produkt zu lesen. Zur Kamera: Ich fotografierte vorher mit E-420, E-520, E-620 und E-3. Nun stand ich vor der Qual der Wahl: neu erschienene OM-D oder E-5. Da ich den spiegellosen noch nicht ganz über den Weg traue und vor allem "etwas in der Hand" haben will, entschied ich mich für die E-5. Desweiteren kann ich dort meinen doch nicht zu verachtenden Zuiko Objektiv Fundus ohne Adapter betreiben. Und nicht zuletzt mag ich einfach dieses Gefühl " SPIEGELREFLEX ". Desweiteren hatte ich die OM-D in der Hand und fand sie einfach zu "kantig". Sie lag mir nicht gut genug in der Hand, da dort keine Ausarbeitungen zum vernünftigen Platzieren der Hände vorhanden sind. Dies ist dem Retro-Look geschuldet. Die Unterschiede zur E-3 sind überragend. Von den Unterschieden zu den semi-pro Kameras der E-XXX Serie ganz zu schweigen. Die E-5 setzt die Schärfe auf ein neueres Level und holt um einiges mehr aus den Objektiven heraus, als die E-3. Das Gehäuse ist, wie von Olympus gewohnt, mehr als super verarbeitet. Die Haptik der Kamera ist sehr gut und wird bei mir noch durch den optional erhältlichen Batteriegriff HLD-4 verbessert. Zwar wiegt die komplette Kombination schon ordentlich, allerdings merkt man auch dadurch, dass man wirklich nicht zimperlich mit der Kamera sein muss. Ich bin viel outdoor unterwegs und fotografiere auch studio-mäßig. Die Kamera machte Gewitterschauer mit, Stürme, den ein oder anderen Platzregen, etc. Sie arbeitet immer noch zuverlässig und einwandfrei. Dass die Video Auflösung nur bei 720p liegt, ist für mich nicht wirklich ein Ausschlussgrund. Ich bin der Meinung, dass Fotografen fotografieren und dafür eine (D)SLR verwenden, Filmografen filmen und verwenden dafür FILMkameras. Somit ist diese Kombination mit super Fotos und einer normalen HD Auflösung absolut zu verkraften. Das muss natürlich jeder für sich selbst beurteilen. Dass Olympus bei der E-5 auf ihr firmeneigenes XD Format der Olympus XD PictureCard verzichtet, und stattdessen neben CF Karten auch normale SD Karten erlaubt finde ich persönlich gut. Ist mal Not am Mann und man benötigt schnell mal eine Speicherkarte findet man nicht immer CF Karten, und XD Picture Cards sucht man im Einzelhandel fast IMMER vergeblich. Eine SD Karte gibts zur Not bei DM oder anderen Drogerien um die Ecke. Der Autofokus ist kaum zu schlagen. Die Konkurrenz hinkt hier (auch heute, 2012, noch) bei vergleichbaren Modellen hinterher. Das Schwenkdisplay ist eine nette Spielere - wer's braucht kann damit glücklich werden, ich verwende es kaum. Die Bedienbarkeit der E-5 ist ebenfalls wieder ganz Olympus: super gelöst. Wem die Werkseinstellungen nicht passen, belegt die Tasten einfach um und speichert sich so seine bevorzugte Tastenbelegung einfach ab. Erreichbarkeit der Knöpfe ist ebenfalls super. Dass Olympus bei der E-5 den Einsatz der BLM-5 Akkus der bspw. E-520 erlaubt, ist durchaus vernünftig. Viele, die die Vorgängermodelle hatten (wie ich), besitzen noch einige dieser Akkus und können es sich so sparen, neue Ersatzakkus für teures Geld anzuschaffen. Alles in Allem: eine super Kamera, die ich jedem der Wert auf Qualität und Preis-/Leistung legt, empfehlen kann. Sie wird euch viel Freude bereiten und egal wann, wo und unter welchen Wetterbedingungen auch immer ein treuer Begleiter sein ! Noch zur Anmerkung: Preis-/Leistung ist der Grund weshalb ich mich überhaupt für Olympus entschied. Die Preise sind nicht niedrig, aber trotzdem bieten sowohl die Objektive, als auch die Bodies WESENTLICH mehr Funktionen und höhere Qualität, als gleichpreisige Artikel anderer Hersteller. Ich habe auch professionelle Arbeiten, welche ich für Auftragskunden fertige. Diese schauen im ersten Augenblick zwar skeptisch wenn ich mit Olympus um die Ecke komme, sind vom Endergebnis jedoch immer mehr als überzeugt.

フラグシップとしてボディ内手ブレ補正やボディ剛性、防塵防滴性能は良いのは当たり前でローパスフィルターを最適化したファインディーテール処理による解像感とパナソニックセンサーによる発色の良さは最高！ 画素ピッチも4.3μmあり余裕あるセンサー！！ あえて苦言を言うならボディが大きく重い。 4/3ならもうちょっと頑張れたはず。 E-3からE-5になった時にすれば4/3はもうちょっと延命出来たかも。
