From achieving those first professional strokes to mastering composition, lighting, and color to finishing beautiful still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, here, in one volume, is a course that covers every skill a developing artist needs. Inspiring and instructive images vividly reveal the intricacies of techniques such as shading, tone, contrasts, stumping, contouring; depth effects, and more. Guided drawings include a charcoal of a nude, landscape on gray tone paper, and still life with chiaroscuro. Review: One of My Favorites! - I have this book in my collection of about TEN drawing books. Recently I purchased a copy to send to an Artist friend of mine, who is getting back into drawing after many years away from it. She is very happy with this book, as I have been with mine. My feeling is that you can gain some knowledge with each book, there is a few ( or more ) pearls of wisdom in there for you to learn from, and it can be different for each of us. You will learn from each book, and I would call this one a "must have". It is however ...not necessarily for the absolute beginner without any drawing background. If you, or the person that you are thinking to purchase this book for...already have some drawing abilities and background, then this book would be the next step-up for you, or them. I am especially fond of pages 94-115, which give good descriptions of landscape effects and techniques....and what you call them! For example: do you know what "Linear landscape" is, or "sfumato" or the Coulisse Effect"...is??? You will after learning from this book. Lots of wonderful illustrations and some photos, explanations, techniques, demonstrations that are easy to understand on "Perspective" the "Lorrain method", drawing with grids, moving your eye-view of your subject. Much, much, more. The drawings are adequate to describe the techniques and methods being done, but don't expect to see beautiful, breathtaking drawings in this book...you are there to learn to create your own! The beginning chapters on artists materials for drawing...are excellent. This is a large, thick book of 253 pages with some nice and helpful demonstrations inside. If you were to include this book among a few other good ones, and you are determined to learn to draw well, you could give yourself a good drawing education in your own home, at your own pace. I would say...' Go for it'! Review: Doesn't miss a beat - I had taken art classes in college, but now that I am retired, I wanted to get back into practice. This book encompasses all the necessry basics, gives instruction in several mediums, and offers lots of visual examples. It is a thick book chocked full, and will definitely serve anyone interested with all that is needed to support his/her own talent in the adventure of drawing.

Wonderfully designed book for art klutzes like me and the highly skilled artists.
This book was recommended by our professional artist teacher. I tried the charcoal exercises first, and was amazed at what I produced! Letโs be clear here about my art skills. On a scale of 1-10, Iโm a 3 with stick figures. So there you go. I am so glad I bought this book. The book itself is a lovely paperback, but itโs sturdy. It is not going to fall to pieces. Iโm supposed to draw/sketch something every day for 100 days. Well, Iโm already behind, but when I take the time to give myself time, itโs working. I just wish the book came with some magical incantation that would endow me with more right-brain. Sadly, it does not. But trust me - - this book is not demanding. Just start at the beginning, practice the very easy to follow instructions and ideas. You too will gain from having this book, but only if you use it.

Very nice book for beginner artist
This book is an excellent resource designed to introduce all the different styles, mediums and surfaces involved in drawing. It is a good place to start, although if you are looking for more hands-on techniques and drawing projects/assignments, you may want to try a different book.

Excellent reference for techniques
Excellent reference for techniques. Very clear and easy to follow. It's not a chatty kind of book that will cajole you into creating art, but it provides exercises and an excellent foundation.
