Hozan Spoke Threader

Out of the box, after a practice spoke I was able to thread 4 stainless replacement spokes for a wheel set with minimal fuss. Threads looked as good as factory threads, and the DT swiss brass nipples seemed to fit the threads well. I did have an issue with a couple spokes getting caught in the die, after it failed to start and I had to fuss with the die a little. I think I solved that, and have a couple theories why it happened. It takes me about a minute or so to cut, and thread a spoke. Perfect for replacing a couple broken spokes and I bought my Hozan knowing it excels at this. For an entire wheel I would rather order custom spokes, or have them made at a local shop that has a $4000 Morizumi threader that can crank them out super fast. Overall I am happy because I can now stock high quality bulk spokes in 310mm lengths, and make what I need. Trying to keep a good assortment of replacement spokes on hand even was becoming a lost cause. Now I can keep about 4 styles of spoke and cover just about everything I see. Instructions are in Japanese, but you can find all you need to know from you tube and I was still able to figure out some useful details from the instructions like how the scale fore depth is graduated in 3mm increments.

Very high quality product, worked exactly like it should. Saved me lots of money by making my own spokes for Bmx wheels instead of buying them.

I was not initially stoked on the idea of the price of this tool... however, after getting it an using it, I understand that there are not many competitors out there and I was looking to save money over the long run. This will definitely save me money and I already fixed 4 different bike wheels with this one purchase. Know in advance that the directions are in Japanese, but they do have pictures to go with it. You can also find videos online on how to use it pretty easily. Does a great job cutting the threads for the spokes and would definitely recommend for a DIYer or someone who wants to work on your bikes independently.

Buen producto, con un embalaje correcto de protección. Posee buenas terminaciones y es muy preciso en su operación, genera roscas de buena calidad y con el ajuste de fábrica. Estoy muy conforme con el resultado de roscado en radios de 2mm de diámetro. es recomendable usar aceite tanto en los mandriles de rosca como en el eje de la manivela. Se recomienda quitar la pintura en los radios para no empastar el mandril de la roscadora. Es una buena herramienta, la recomiendo.

Well, it was too good to be true. After the first successful try, my second try got stuck in the cutting head. I know better than to continue any kind of troubleshooting, and the second Hozan got returned too. Maybe you'll be successful, I'm really inclined to say don't waste your precious time. --- The cavern of price between this and the Kowa/Wegmir/Morazumi is so large, I just had to try one more Hozan and hope my first was a dud. The second one exhibited none of the issues I saw with the first, it gave me a (relatively) successful thread on my first try. The threads aren't factory perfect, there's a slight bit of resistance, but this should hopefully work for my projects. --- I'm new to threading spokes myself, but certainly not new to mechanical jobs or using taps and dies. I've watched the YouTube videos and read the forum posts. This tool is supposed to roll threads on a spoke by deforming it instead of cutting it, I understand that much... When I received it, the threading head, which has a set screw to lock it down, needed to be assembled onto the tool shaft. It did not just slide on. That should have been my first red flag. I had to put it the head under my heat gun and the shaft in my freezer, and it still fought me going on the whole way. Once I got it assembled, I lubed it up and fed it a spoke, got a nipple threaded partway on, and then the nipple bound up. I then spent hours adjusting it every which way, trying multiple spokes, trying multiple nipples, with varying degrees of the same issue. I never did get a nipple to thread fully onto a spoke. I finally came back to the reviews, saw a few other reviewers with similar issues, decided I wasn't crazy, and filed for a return. Maybe it will work for you, but I can't deal with a tool that doesn't work off the bat. Guess I'm opening my wallet for the Morizumi.

This tool is easy to use and I successfully threaded a set of spokes without any loss. You will need a mount to hold the tool and oil to place on the threads of the roller and spokes. The markings on the rod show how far you have threaded the spoke as you turn the crank. A simple but nice feature. The instructions were also thorough and helpful. Sanding the spokes flat if you had to cut them is key. My only small complaint is that for what it is, it "seems" like it should cost less. Is it less than a $4,000 spoke machine and did it work? Yes... I'm just saying...

I debated this or the Cyclo version, which was much cheaper, but having read the reviews, I decided on the Hozan threading machine. Unfortunately, this product seems unavailable in the UK, but I was able to buy it from the US via Amazon, which arrived a lot quicker than expected with import costs included was £112. The machine is simple to use, and I've done around 80 spokes. Some threads run smother than others, but no duff ones have been made so far. Keep the threading head lubricated and don't rush. Others use a drill to drive the handle, but you are just asking for trouble and risking damaging the head. Overall, I'm satisfied with it,does the job,maybe a little expensive but better that waiting for spokes to arrive.
