What are the dimensions of the lower shelf?

16 1/4 by 22 1/4 inches. You can adjust it to any height.

is there a way to get an extra shelf unit to add underneath?

Not at the moment. I believe there is a table with a second shelf but I'm not sure is sold by them but I've seen one on Amazon.
