Following the demise of the short lived Pride & Glory, Zakk Wylde started work on his first (and so far only) solo album "Book Of Shadows". Originally released in 1996 it is now reissued on Armoury Records and includes the 3 track bonus disc that was added in 1999. "Book Of Shadows" finds Zakk Wylde in a much more introspective mood than on his other recordings and contains a substantial amount of acoustic material and includes "Throwin' It All Away", Zakk's elegy for his friend Shannon Hoon of the band Blind Melon who had recently died of a drug overdose.

WYLDE'S MAGNUM OPUS AND A GENUINE FIVE STAR ALBUM
There are no bad Zakk Wylde/Black Label Society albums, period, and in fact most are really good. However, this album is something very-very special, and in my opinion Zakk's best work by a large margin. Which is very unusual for me to be saying because this is not Zakk's hardest/heaviest work, which is always what I gravitate towards. Every aspect of this album is wonderful and beautiful, and even though this is not even close to Zakk's hardest/heaviest work, it is also in no way a rock ballad *ank-fest. You likely already know that is not Zakk's style, as he has spent the better part of his career telling us what a bad^ss he is.Everyone knows what a talented and diverse guitarist Zakk is, but I think he also has a voice that is tailor made for Rock/Metal, and on some of these tracks his vocal performance is truly phenomenal. Now, if you read my many other CD reviews you will see that I have never used the word masterpiece to describe a CD, and in the big picture of Rock/Metal as a whole I don't know if I would consider this CD at that level, maybe I would, but at any rate this is without question Zakk's masterwork. If you don't own this CD you are missing out on something truly special. This just may be a perfect album. I can not recommend this CD more highly.

One of my favorite albums ever
Such an amazing album. Evwry track just blends into another. So mellow, better than Hangover Music Vol.6 by far. Million Miles Away has such a great guitar flow. Too Numb to Cry is so hauntingly beautiful.Sold my Soul,Road back Home. All songs on the album are great. The album is southern rock like Pride & Glory but way sicker. Slow melodies with such precision and heart,i love it. If u get the bonus disc in the special version you get 3 extra songs that are well worth the extra few bux. I got my deluxe version for cheaper than the original(thanks to Amazon). More mellow than BLS but so beautiful it is scary. The album is perfect for any fan of any style of southern or rock music.

Just three things to say
1. I love metal as much as the next metal head but this is NOT a metal album - get over it! If your sole review comprises 3 stars because this isn't metal you really need to consider broadening your horizons.2. Apart from metal I also love all other kinds of music including classical, blues, folk, jazz, fusion, flamenco, etc. etc. This IS some really good acoustic guitar and piano music. Buy it! You won't regret it!3. If you liked this album check out Zakk with Black Label Society - Hangover Music Vol 6. More of the same though there are a few heavier tunes mixed in. Not quite the normal full on BLS heavy but a little heavier.

Wow
I was recently turned on to Zakk Wylde (mispelled it in another review) and Black Label Society and I wish I had heard of them earlier. This album by Zakk was the first I listened to and I was blown away. It's mostly acoustic and unplugged but still one of his best, in my opinion. He plays the piano and acoustic guitar like almost none other I have heard. His voice is very unique and the lyrics very meaningful. He covers "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and puts a spin on it to the point where I like it much better than the original. Last song on the album is "The First Noel" is now my favorite Christmas song!

A must for any Zakk Wylde fan!
This is still my favorite album, hands down. This my fourth copy in the last seven years. I keep wearing them out. Everything on this album- vocals,instruments,lyrics- done by Zakk Wylde. It displays his range of talent better than any other project he's been involved with, including his many years as Ozzy Osbourne's axeman, or even his solo efforts with Pride and Glory or Black Label Society. From the acoustic bonus track "The Color Green" to the lush, powerful "Throwin' It All Away", Zakk Wylde's Book of Sorrows delivers pure Wylde genius. It is a must-have for every fan of this legendary guitarist.

One of the Best Recrods I Have Come Across in a Long Time
From the moment I started listening to this I couldn't stop. This quickly became on of my favorite albums. If you thought it was cool when Alice in Chains release SAP and Jar of Flies, then you WILL enjoy this record. It is an amazing melange of songs that are mellow but still quite heavy. I am genuinely shocked that songs like "Way Beyond Empty" and "Road Back Home" never got air play. While "Hangover Music" comes close, I only hope that Zakk Wylde will decide to make another record of similar style and caliber.

Heartfelt, gooseflesh-inducing, and beautiful
Any notion that Zakk Wylde is strictly a metal guitarist is thrown out the window upon hearing this album. A rather hard to find album (alleviated by the addition of it on Amazon MP3), this CD proves how versatile and multi-dimensional Zakk's playing and vocals can become. I'd venture to say every song on the album brings out an emotional response from within me -- an absolutely astounding album and a musical masterpiece that deserves a larger audience.

hidden gem
Discovered this CD purely by accident. Difficult to pigeonhole this one as Zakk wylde's pedigree doesn't help you appreciate how great and accessible this piece of work is. Seriously if you feel like taking a punt on something that is highly likely to become one of your top 10 CDs ever you could do so much worse than this hidden gem.

Er kann auch entspannt
Eine wunderbar ruhige Platte des Heavy-Virtuosen. Sehr entspannt, stellenweise sogar etwas folkig, bluesig.
