A delectable peek at the tradition of afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel -- and the enchanting history of taking tea Muriel Moffat has been sipping tea at Victoria's storied Empress Hotel for 60 years -- and sharing all those lovely cups with four generations of Moffats. When she poured her love of all things tea into a darling little book, it soon became a bestseller, with 30,000 copies sold from the shelves of the Empress gift shop in just five years. Beautifully redesigned and ready for its book trade debut, Afternoon Tea offers a peek behind the curtain at the magnificent hotel, where afternoon tea has been taken with elegance and gourmet indulgence since 1908. Included are several well-loved recipes from the Tea Lobby, which has hosted the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, Rudyard Kipling and Shirley Temple. This charming book is also a chatty and colourful history of tea and the many rituals surrounding it, sure to entertain the novice and enthusiast alike. Steeped in a love of traditions, Ms. Moffat's beloved book celebrates a littleknown ritual that may just be the foundation of everything worthy -- family, friends and, of course, tea." Brings you back to a more civil time
I love this book. The cover is beautiful and I keep it out on my sofa table along with an antique tea pot! I have been to Victoria BC and the tea at the Empress was the highlight of my trip. The best thing about this book is the person quality and the story before the recipes. Anyone can write a cook book !

Nothing New or Original
I love tea and have started hosting tea parties for my friends and their daughters. I enjoy browsing books for new themes and dishes for tea parties. This book was disappointing. It is rather small (approximately 7.25" x 5.5") and lacks substance in its 64 pages. It didn't have anything new or different. After a relatively long introduction (6 out of the book's 62 pages), there was a brief history of tea followed by an overview of tea etiquette (including how to read tea leaves). If you are interested in a more thorough examination of the history tea and the different varieties of tea, you may want to check out SerendipiTea a guide to the varieties, origins, and rituals of tea which also includes recipes. As for recipes, there only 19 and you can find them elsewhere: -Egg Salad Sandwiches -Smoked Salmon Sandwiches -Carrot and Ginger Sandwiches -Curried Chicken Sandwiches -Shrimp Mousse Sandwiches -Cucumber Sandwiches -Fruit Tartlets -Empress Scones -Scottish Shortbreads -The Famous English Crumpet -Maids of Honour -Banbury Tarts -Queen Mary's Lemon Curd -Clotted Cream -Mock Devonshire Cream -Russian Tea Cakes -The Famous English Trifle -Eccles Cake -Sally Lunn Cake For books with tea party menus and recipes, I recommend Having Tea: Recipes & Table Settings and Tea Party: 20 Themed Tea Parties with Recipes for Every Occasion, from Fabulous Showers to Intimate Gatherings . The latter is much more recent and includes suggested decorations and music as well as full-page color photos. If you are on a budget and only want recipes, you might like Totally Teatime Cookbook (Totally Cookbooks) which is smaller than Afternoon Tea but has more than twice the number of recipes. I will be returning my copy of this book.

High Tea at the Empress, in a book
The Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C. is famous for its High Tea. We went there, loved the tea, and bought the book as a keepsake. Then gave it away, so we had to order a couple more. Not just a keepsake, it contains instructions for producing the delightful sandwiches, pastries and goodies that are part of the ritual. We're building a High Tea tomorrow for a friend's birthday party using this as a guide.

nothing special
There are some wrong information within the context. Nothing special about the recipes. There are better books out there about this special meal.
