I guess i'm dumber than a rock. how do you mount it? what is the nylon strap for? what about the flat black stickem things? can't find any help net.

The black stickers are for the unused holes in the carrier. the nylon straps are for securing any objects that you put in the carrier, you have to slide them through the rectangle plastic pieces that have 2 holes and slits on them. The rubber pieces with holes go between the carrier and the plastic rectangles like a washer almost. The hooks go under the car roof rack (cross bars only) and into the carrier through the holes. The directions are super confusing and unhelpful but after some back and forth brainstorming I figured it out.

There were only 2 of the 2-hole rubber things in the box. How do I get 2 more?

There should be 4. The other two is stick together very tight. Need to peel off each other. The rubber cushion is not very thick

Is there any assembly required

Only to attach to the cross bars when it's needed.

Will a set of golf clubs fit?

I fit my full set in there, with a fully packed TaylorMade stand bag. The cover closed, but I took my driver out of the golf bag just to be safe, and place it next to the golf bag. The golf clubs took up less than half of the storage space. There was still lots of room for a suitcase or a couple of carry-ons, etc.
