The Lean Six Sigma Pocket Toolbook: A Quick Reference Guide to 100 Tools for Improving Quality and Speed

Love this book. I work a lot in the OpEx/Process Improvement space and this book acts as a friendly reminder of all the tools that are at my disposal. Hopping industries can often leave you wondering if a tool is applicable and this serves as that refresher. Also a great book for junior resources who often lack industry experience. This can get them up and running and using the LSS lexicon.

The Lean Six Sigma Pocket Toolbook I purchased this pocket toolbook knowing it wouldn't be a comprehensive book discussing the theories, principles, and background of Lean principles. I have taken numerous Master and Doctorate level courses related to Production and Manufacturing, so I have an understanding of DMAIC and lean six sigma. I only wanted the pocket guide for selecting the right tools to achieve the tollgate deliverables for projects at work, and as a quick reference (Cliff Notes so to speak) for each of the tollgates. As a result, I feel this book succeeds as being a pocket guide. It isn't a full textbook but it is detailed enough to get the job done. The various tools featured in the book (value added analysis, fishbone diagram, Pareto charts, etc... are valuable as they are presented in a high-level format to guide you towards the tollgate deliverables. Overall: 5/5 stars, should be sitting on your shelf if you work with LSS projects at work.

I have been using the LSS Pocket Toolbook for years, primarily in an instructional mode. No, it is not a book that is going to add any knowledge to an experienced quality resource as many reviews state, but it is a very good tool for teaching new CPI resources. I am currently in a teaching role where this book is handed out to every participant. In fact, if the books do not arrive in time, it is disruptive to the teaching flow. For most topics in the class there is an equivalent area of the Toolbook that I can first refer to before going into the main material. I have an established nightly reading plan that will take a participant through the entire book in the course of a two-week introductory CPI class. I teach some topics entirely from the Toolbook, for example, C&E Matrix and DoE. There are some key concept pages that we turn to and read together, for example, page 70 Types of Data, page 118 Types of Variation. The section on hypothesis testing provides some very good plain language descriptions of the basic concepts that help people get through the initial learning. I am on my third copy where I coil bind and add tabs for quick reference. I carry this book wherever I go when teaching or working on CPI projects; there are almost daily opportunities to open it and discuss some aspect of CPI. If I were to change anything about the book, I would make it flow in more of a DMAIC fashion with some additional information about the use of the tools in the context of a project. There is a section that does this to some extent, but somewhat general. Many minor typos remain in the book from the first edition, but no technical errors that I have found. The PDF version that has been around for some time is not formatted very well, with page breaks in the wrong locations and tables not converting well.

This book remains one of my favorites and I still use it in the classroom today. SSD Global Solutions has it’s in collaterals, but I still often recommend this particular book for a summary of the tools with an easy explanation.

This is a great reference. I would prefer this over the Memory Jogger series because it is more comprehensive, better organized and seems to have the right balance of theory and practical application for the Lean Six Sigma practitioner. This is definitely a tactical "how to" for Lean Six Sigma - and by tactical, I mean that it contains checklists, forms, discussions of the tools and real world examples. This book doesn't focus on management involvement, strategy, case studies, or the like. It is FOR the practitioner, BY the practitioner.

This pocket toolbook hits the "sweet spot" as a quick reference guide for lean six sigma practitioners. Don't expect this to be an in-depth treatment of the 70+ tools covered in this book. If you're new to the lean/six sigma disciplines, you need to start someplace else. However, if you are currently working in these disciplines and you need a reference with enough meat to remind you of how/why/when a particular tool should be used and also a little of the statistical foundations supporting the tool, then you will find this to be a very valuable book to own. I own just about all of the "pocket guides" and I often find them to be a little too cryptic and abbreviated to meet my needs. This book is a very nice middle ground between the often complex and verbose "learning textbooks" and the often times overly brief pocket guides. As with any first edition, there are some errors that slipped through the editing process, but I can still highly recommend this book as one to keep handy when your out there fighting those "quality and productivity" battles.

This is the only book needed for most lean a statistical tools.

Es un gran libro, imprescindible para todo aquel interesado en las principales herramientas Lean y Six Sigma, explicadas de una manera muy sencilla y práctica. Tiene un tamaño muy útil para llevarlo a donde se quiera. La tapa blanda es muy cómoda.
