Is it meant for the pencil to write on the slate under water?

the pencil does work very well underwater

How is one supposed to replace the pencil?

I go and get # 2 pencils and just replace them when needed. Also using the magic eraser sponges you can get in house hold cleaning works great for cleaning the slate after dives. Just pop the pencil out of the plastic sleave cythe metal and eraser of the new pencil and slide the new pencil in.
