No, because the mic stand you use should be adjustable up & down. And then you could slide the mic for adjustment in the holder... If you have good ranged mics & and a good sound person you should also have no issues.

Q: how high does this stand go up to?

The mic stand itself, is not part of the tablet mount holder. Only the short part of tablet holder, that is attached to the mic stand, is included with the tablet holder.

Q: How wide does this stretch open

It opens wide enough to fit an iPad Air mini comfortably.

Q: does installing it higher like in the picture make the mic stand top heavy and apt to fall?

I have not had that experience. I have mine installed high to operate my iPad and it's fine. Mind you it's an iPad Air, not sure how a full sized would do.
