Between sizes m and l. how do these run? leaning toward m because fabric won't shrink, but don't like tight waist band.

If the waistband being tight is your main concern, then I would advise sizing up, as the band is fairly snug. I wear a small and the waistband is just a touch tight after each wash and next time worn. Hope this helps you!

Do these open in front for easy access?

They do not have a fly. It's all on or all off. A fly opening would make them less functional as sports underwear/support.

Fit pretty true to size, They have a description. Legs are not 5" on the ones I received though.
