Toymaking with Children Paperback – September 1, 2010

This is a lovely book filled with ideas for making toys for children such as wooden animals and homemade dolls. The title made me think that these would be simple projects that I could make WITH my children, but the projects are way too complicated for most children. Many of the interesting projects involve carving wood (but no instructions), knitting, and complex doll-making techniques. I didn't think most of the suggestions came with adequate instructions, but having all the beautiful ideas in one place made it worth the price. The photographs of the children are very nice.

Reviews must be 20 words or more, but really this book can be summed up with one word "Fabulous!" The instructions are easy to follow. There is a lot of variety, suggestions, photos, and more. The directions are easy to follow and there are projects for every skill level. This is a must have book for people interested in making natural, quality, lasting, beautiful, organic, toys.

This really is an all-in-one book for making all the quintessential Waldorf early childhood toys, even playstands. Yes, the title is a little confusing, since the adult must make most of the toys, but that makes no real difference to me. Full of great ideas and clear illustrations. Some projects, like the Waldorf doll, would require more explicit directions, but there are plenty of projects to keep one busy.

This book is for anyone who enjoys crafts and natural materials. Some of the toys might be tricky to make WITH children, though. I have just started on a knitted doll design. The instructions are easy to follow if you have a little experience. The photographs in the book show examples of children playing with natural toys in imaginative ways which I found useful.
