They don't make 'em like this anymore
Every 10 or so years you see a unique game like this. I originally bought this in 2000 when it came out but never got a chance to play it much, or rather, played more popular titles of the time. But, something about it stuck with me and I bought a copy recently and have been playing it.First off, the music and atmosphere are fantastic. Games don't usually have this atmosphere that sucks you in and keeps you interested, and Persona 2 pulls off the dark atmosphere very well.Second, if you've ever played an RPG before, you know you get into battles. But, when is the last time you've entertained a demon and got him to make a contract with you, or give you items in the middle of a battle? That's just the kind of oddity that makes this game great. It doesn't stop there of course. No, you can have demons give you tarot cards, you can summon them later, have them give you information etc... it's all very detailed. The cities and people are also pretty expansive. It's one of those video game landscapes so large you almost don't want to waste the time checking everything out... this is where Persona 2 shines. It's very odd and fascinating so you want to see it all no matter how much time you've already spent.I wouldn't trust a remake of this game... this original version is "just right" and lightning doesn't often strike twice...It's expensive at 30 to 100 for a good copy, but it's worth the money. This goes double if you like classic gaming and don't care about graphics. Tired of the same ol thing? Give it a whirl...

A game good enough to withstand the "no playstation network entry" boundary!
I simply could not believe what I witnessed when I first played this game. This is truly a game that can withstand the test of time, because it has a plot-line and elements that seem ahead of their time. The battle system isn't perfect, but anyone with patience and a strategic mind would be well rewarded. I can only wonder why it was never put on PSN, or if the remake is coming to the US, but like Dragon Warrior VII, it is well worth having a PS2/PS1.

good looks and insane difficulty
I only just got the game from the playstation store and holy crap do i regret wasting $10 bucks on it... its so difficult it makes ninja gaiden on nes and battletoads on nes look easy by comparison. The graphics are decent for a PS1 era game, but the voice acting in generally is really bad. if only this game was easier it might be fun, buts its not easy or much fun either. nows when the ability to get refunds for digitally downloaded games would come in handy... even if your a persona fan like iam, your better off avoiding this game. i might do a better review of persona 2 eternal punishment if i ever get farther then 3 battles without dying like i did really fast

Deep But Ultimately Frustrating!
Persona2 has all the qualities of a good rpg. The characters have such a history that you actually care about their well being. I have been playing Persona2 off and on for about a year often taking a break from it when I encounter a particularly hard boss, like the Weng Long fortune teller Ms. Shishawa (I think that was her name) in the underwater maze. Uala is my favorite character since I would most react like she would to the weird plot that makes up the drama of the game.It has to do with a evil cult basically wanting to cleanse the world of all corruption by destroying it and creating it over again (you would think) this cult has very prominent and powerful members, heads of state, government officials, the local police, the military...celebrity fortune tellers...etc. Well you play a reporter for a small "zine" put out by the Kismet Publishing Company and you first get involved in the Joker murders...Well I could tell you the whole story but it's very long and if you don't pay attention it gets complicated. You end up fighting Narlethotep, a creature straight out of the Cthulhu mythos for those of you who are familiar with Lovecraft. There are quite a few Lovecraft inspired monsters you end up fighting. This is a very wierd and difficult rpg. The mazes and dungeons, though looking like ultra-postmodern dance clubs, buildings etc, will give you migraines and you have the bosses for whom you'll have to level up as much as possible and devise somekind of strategy because in Persona2, strength is nothing without some brains and even then you'll still get a headache. This game is hard and not for the average gamer. I recommend renting it first.

Gone but not forgotten
Atlus released a short print run of this title to Amazon earlier in the year and being a big fan of the Persona series I immediately snapped it up. If you've played any of the other Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series games you will feel right at home here as smart (and smartly dressed) group of high school students attempt to save themselves and the world around them from certain doom. The battle system is turn-based but will continue in real time until you stop it to input attacks, spells or item commands and is different enough from standard JRPG's to be both strategic and interesting. Like the first game in this series, demons and spirits can be bartered with for items and tarot cards which you in turn use to create new Persona's (think powerful alternate selves) in the Velvet room. With the popularity of Persona 4 and the smash hit that was Persona 3, it's good to see where the series came from and good to know that this game still holds up and is worth playing. Get it if you can!

Good one.
Good game..solid one of the best RPG's for the PS1...Don't know if people will like it now, but give it a try if you are an avid RPG person. Can't go wrong with this one.
