Tilia cordata (Littleleaf Linden, Small Leaf Linden, European Linden) * Full sun part shade * Zones 3-7 * height 60’ width 40’ * origin Europe Highly sought after by bonsai enthusiaists! Fragrant pale yellow flowers in late spring, small nutlets with attached leafy wings. Adapts to a wide range of soil conditions. Good tolerance for urban conditions! Tilia cordata Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained loams, but adapts to a wide range of soil conditions. Good tolerance for urban conditions. Tolerant of heavy pruning, and may be grown as a hedge. Littleleaf linden has been widely planted in the U. S. as an ornamental shade tree because of its (a) attractive foliage, (b) dense, low-branched, pyramidal to ovate form and (c) tolerance for urban conditions. Ornamental features include fragrant pale yellow flowers in late spring, small nutlets with attached leafy wings (to 3.5” long) and ovate, shiny dark green leaves (to 3” long) with acuminate tips, serrate margins and cordate bases. This is a medium to large deciduous tree, typically growing to 50-70’ (less frequently to 100’) tall. Fragrant, creamy yellow flowers in drooping cymes appear in June. When a tree is in full bloom, bees often visit in such abundant numbers that humming can be heard many feet from the tree. Flowers give way to nutlets that are attached to narrow bract-like wings (top 3.5” long). Nutlets ripen in late summer. Fall color is an undistinguished pale green to pale yellow. A number of narrow pyramidal to fastigiate cultivars are available in commerce. Companion Plants: Goes well with Siberian elm and Chinese elm. Check out our store for these great plants!

Incorrect order?
Hmmm...this item arrived quickly and in good shape, and the plant looks healthy, although small (I would expect a three-year seedling to be taller than 11", since they should grow 1 - 2 ' annually). However...I have no idea what it is. The receipt says it is a Littleleaf Linden, which is what I ordered. But, there is no label on the plant itself, nor planting or care instructions in the box, which I found odd. And while I am not a horticulturist, I just don't see how the plant that arrived is a Littleleaf Linden. LL have cordate or sometimes orbicular leaves with finely serrated edges and venation that could be described as partially palmate near the petiole but pinnate distally. This plant has ovoid to acute, smooth-edged leaves with pinnate venation. I'll probably just keep it rather than hassling with a return, but pretty sure I just wasted $30. I was planning to plant it by my beehives; with any luck it will be SOMETHING that flowers. Not very hopeful, unfortunately.

Tree was bent in half!
This 3 foot tree came bent in half in a 1 foot box. That means it was kinked in the middle! I planted it anyway because I assumed the company sending it knew what they were doing... I was wrong. Needless to say, I have an 18" tree now with only 6 leaves that looks like it's dying. Not sure it will be strong enough to make it through the winter. Next time send it in a longer box!!?

Perfect Plant
I got a Japanese maple from this same distributor last year and both the maple and the linden blossom are doing fantastic! The plant stock is very hardy, and I am very pleased. All of the graphs that are sent, they have been ready to plant, and have budded in a timely manner after shippment. I have found no reason for complaint, but I have only good things to say about this supplier. :-)

Cute little Linden tree
Given as a gift, but the recipient was quite pleased. This arrived well-packaged and healthy. It was only about 24-30 inches tall - a baby - but it seems to be thriving. A few insects were attacking it later in the summer, (no fault of the vendor) but a systemic treatment seems to have worked. Hopeful that it will make it through the winter.
