A beautiful tribute to a great city with a rich car chasing heritage.
"He's the most ruthless crime lord to ever prowl the streets of the City by the Bay. His name is Charles Jericho, and he certainly did not bring his heart to San Francisco. Now the fate of the sunny city rests in the hands of one man: a detective, a hero, a Driver. John Tanner has put hundreds of criminals behind bars and chased injustice out of many a city, but this mission poses a threat like no other -- and could be his last. Step into the driver's seat as the hardened detective and get ready for a relentless manhunt that could end either with the restoration of justice or the setting of the sun on the Golden Gate Bridge forever." This corny excerpt from the above description of Driver San Francisco gets me emotional. Why? Because this game *has soul*. What does that mean? It means that Driver San Francisco perfectly nails the car chase esthetic. If you like car chases, either as getaway or as pursuer, this game satisfies perfectly. We've all watched movies where the hero must drive through traffic to get away from the bad guys (the excellent Paris chase in the Bourne Identity comes to mind). Driver San Francisco (DSF) takes the world's most famous car chase city, and makes it your playground. San Francisco is lovingly rendered, and you are allowed to drive any car you want, including tanker trucks, and buses, and sports cars and SUVs. The fascinating thing about DSF is how it blurs the line between menu and game. In most games, you choose a car, and then you play the game with the car you've chosen. In this game, you can change cars in the middle of a chase! This nutty idea is aptly rationalized in the context of the game. It works brilliantly, and creates exciting new possibilities in car-chase game-play, as well as in the narrative itself. Driver San Francisco breaks new ground in video-game storytelling. Yes, except in cut-scenes, your character never gets out of the car, but you'll still be amazed by the variety of car-chasing challenges the people at UBIsoft have cooked up. There are races, there are pursuits, there are getaways, there are drift challenges, there are buggy races, and, in the context of the whimsical story, there are even stranger challenges, which I'll not spoil here. Where most games like this would simply support pursuit, getaway, and races, DSF goes above and beyond expectations to give the player something truly new. DSF perfectly presents cars as toys, and the streets of San Francisco as your playground. Go play in the street.

One of the best driving games I have played
I'm a huge fan of racing games in general and this one is no exception. If you only take the story for what it is, (an attempt to make some sense out of the ludicrous ability that you have, called shift) the driving is an excellent attempt at creating some great car chases with over-exaggerated drifting and enjoyable gameplay. The shifting ability allows you to at any moment change into any car you would like, meaning that if you mess up, the penalty is relatively minor. Some people think that this ability makes the game too easy, which it can, but it also adds an entirely new layer to the gameplay which if used properly makes it a much more enjoyable experience. The driving can take some getting used to but after about 10-15 minutes, people who have never been very good at racing games (my wife included) are able to pick up and drive. My wife especially enjoys it, because if she crashes, she can get right back into the action (using shift) without having to have too much skill in being able to recover her car. There are tons of side missions that range in difficulty from drifting 20 meters, to jumping a car 50 meters, to driving a Lamborghini under 20 Semi trailers in less than 3 minutes to racing a Mclaren F1 vs a Pagoni Zonda down a freeway at 200+mph. These missions add some variety and extend the life beyond the main story missions, which only take about 8-10 hours to complete. The online multiplayer is just as much fun, if not more so than the singleplayer. Most modes involve everyone having the ability to shift and it keeps the game fast-paced and interesting. Tag mode allows for everyone, except the one who is "it" to shift and try and take the tag away from them. This provides for frantic and unpredictable gameplay which keeps you on the edge of your seat. Trailblazer has you fighting to stay in a trail behind a Delorean in order to accumulate points. Whoever accumulates 100 points first wins. This mode is easier for people with less skill to pick up and play as, the car you are following only goes a moderate speed and is easy enough to keep up with. This allows for less skilled players to get into the action a lot better and use shift to keep in the fun. I only described these two modes to keep the review short, but there are several different modes to play, both with shift and without, which offer gameplay styles that should suit almost all individuals. There are also demos for both the singleplayer and the multiplayer if you would like to try before you buy. Overall, I found this game to be both enjoyable for those who enjoy racing games and those who do not and would recommend it to just about anyone.

This game rules!
People! This game is awesome! The shift thing where you can change cars on the fly is so freaking cool. I love the graphics, they worked hard on the storyline and the cut scenes, and it's just a ton of fun! The challenges and races get progressively harder and I'm really enjoying it. For $20 you seriously cannot beat this. I've been a fan of Driver since the original title, Driver: You are the Wheelman on Playstation over 13 years ago(!), and I haven't played an installment since until now, and wow am I happy I bought this one. The original title took place in many cities, but my favorite was San Francisco. I used to spend hours in that game just flying through the air on those crazy steep streets, so when I saw that this whole game was San Francisco again, I anted up the $20 and couldn't be happier. One con: One of the best things about the original game was seeing your driving in director mode and flying all around your car while it was paused in mid-air, etc. As far as I can tell in this game, in order to do that, you have to activate something called a U-Play Passport which costs money. I don't appreciate this, and I won't be shelling out money for something that should be native to the game. While it would be nice to see my crazy crashes and jumps and record and share them, etc. and it's REALLY annoying that I can't, it doesn't affect the actual gameplay itself, which is still stellar. One hint: Save up 750,000 willpower early to buy the Lamborghini Murcielago early on. I think it's the best car in the game (though admittedly I am only about 80% done and there might some even better car waiting to be unlocked, who knows?) In all, I SERIOUSLY LOVE THIS GAME. It got me to stop playing MW3, which is tough to do... :)

Great concept, fun, playable and obscene.
SMALL SPOILER INSIDE I love everything about this game except for one thing,,, the language. First the game. You are a cop/ex race car driver. You see a bad guy that you collared escape from custody on the day he was to be locked up for good. You chase him and during the chase, you are T-Boned by a bus. You wake up and realize (slight spoiler, but you will figure this out in the first bit of gameplay) that you are in a coma, but you can "leave your body" and enter the body of anyone driving in the city. You find that you have missions that need a good driver to complete and you are the only one that can pull it off. The first mission is to drive some dude to the hospital before he dies. You gotta get him there fast! He's a cop who just got hit by a bus... He's you... Assuming you get yourself to the hospital in time, you will - from your hospital bed - take over hundreds of different drivers in the city and solve riddle after riddle to find out how to catch the escaped bad guy. You even drive AS A BAD GUY sometimes to find out who the various player in the syndicate are - it is a great scenario. The driving is excellent, the missions are good and you get to drive tons of different vehicles which behave according to their characteristics just as you would expect. GREAT GAME! One small problem, the dialogue is FILTHY. I'm no prude, but my 7 year old son likes to watch me play sometimes (or play himself) and this one is just too filthy for him to watch/play. It would be ok if it weren't for the language. Bummer.

Really good game
An enjoyable game, even by 2017 standards. Car selection is impressive and diverse for a driving game, and it offers some fun mechanics. Add on the director mode, you're looking at a game that can easily get you your money's worth of entertainment. Just don't expect GTA.

Child's Play
I was very excited for Driver San Francisco after hearing glowing reviews all across the board. And quite frankly, i don't know what anyone is talking about. My disappointment for this game started right off the bat as i was thrusted into a choppy, low-frame rate metropolis that sort of looked like the SanFran if you were playing RUSH in the 90's. I then watched 3 cloned Volkswagen Beetles wiz by me right in a row right as i was pressing down on the gas pedal for the very first time. At that moment, I accepted that this was an arcade style game and should be played as such. I didnt drive around 10 seconds before i realized that the driving physics are more wacky and cartoony then most of the Need for Speed series. You can easily predict and weave through traffic as if you are on rails, with absolutely no chance for fishtailing; even in the Challenger. After enduring enough of that, i pressed start and guided myself to the controls menu to look for manual transmission and saw that IT WAS NOT EVEN THERE. Where in the hell does someone get off producing a driving game without the ability to shift gears!?! Even the Test Drive series which is way down there in the arcade style handling, has not only the ability to shift, but to have a clutch. One more thing i have to criticize harshly about this game is the voice acting, its just...awful. The voice acters sound like they are reading of a poorly translated japanese script with the inflections of a child that just learned how to speak english. Everyone talks like flippy from starfox. It sounds like nothing i know, but after a while it was so annoying i think its mostly what lead me to put the controller down. And all could have been overlooked if the game had substance, and well, it does, but very little, like a PB&J your hispanic nanny gave you. The coolest part of the game is of course that you have no body to imprision your Characters soul. Which means you can possess the driver of nearly any car in San Francisco as often and as many times as you like. Cool right? Kinda.. All the cars are the same, you will be very, very lucky to see more than 4 or 5 different cars for 3 city blocks. That means going both ways. But, the upside of this is, if your in a hot pursuit situation, you can spirit out of the car the police are chasing you with; take control of the next 3 semi's that are barreling across on the other side of the street and ram them all into the pursuiters while you watch the getaway car flee. Pretty cool, the first 5 times... There are several missions that unlock cars, parts, areas of the game and other missions. But the developers of the game really were not very creative. The missions are very repetitive because there are a very limitied number of ways you can interact with the environment. Those are: Ramming Missions, Races, Pursuits, Time Trails, Jumps, and that boring mini game they put you in that stupid situation where you have to get close to the car you are pursuing but not too close or the mission fails. Some of the missions were slightly more memorable but only because they place the player in comedic situations like being a first time driving student. But that is all it is, comedic, not a test of skill. That said however, there are some weird and funny passengers you find yourself driving around the city that can say some pretty funny or cool things while you are driving, like swaping into a cop car might make your partner say, "I've waited for this day my whole life, because i admire you so much sir!" or someone saying, "Im glad you picked me...for taking out to dinner of course!". Ubisoft did not waste this golden opprotunity to experience what the passengers of a totally random car in the city might say. I couldnt try the multi-player even after i bought the game BRAND new because Ubisoft was not even competent enough to put the complete code on the inside of the box, 2 letters were missing, but the game was pretty bad, so i didnt really even bother calling customer support to try...call it lazy, i say quit if it's not fun anymore. The only reason im giving this game 3 stars istead of 2 is because when everything is said and done. You need a driving game with a laid-back relaxed atmosphere when you feel that certain lazy high you get sometimes when you just want to play something that not everyone and their dog and their dogs chew toy is trying to shoot at you. The soundtrack is cool too.
