In the murky alleyways of New York City, homeless Maxx huddles in his box and dreams of crushing evil villains. But when he bursts into the colorful netherworld of the Outback, the Maxx is a hero, in full purple splendor. His friend Julie, a freelance social worker, thinks the Maxx's alternate universe is just an escape from the harsh reality of New York-not realizing that she, too, roams the Outback as the Jungle Queen. Join the Maxx for deliciously demonic adventures in both worlds, as he scours streets and jungles in search of the link between his two realities. Will he be able to find the connection before it's too late. Review: Sam Kieth & MTV at their finest - Excellent show. Love the heavy psychological Jungian themes that Sam Kieth injects into his work. To be honest i liked the VHS cut better; where all 13 episodes are just sewn together in one continuous movie experience versus broken into individual episodes like they are here. But im happy to have this in the collection. Love rewatching it every couple years. Phenomenal story, score, art and voice acting. Review: Great movie - There are two things to consider about this purchase. First, as stated in other reviews, the process of burning the DVD creates a product that may not play all copies on all DVDs. For the first one I ordered, episodes 1 and 2 wouldn't play in my DVD player. I borrowed a friend's copy and it played fine. So I did an exchange with desertcart. The second copy played just fine. Be prepared if you have to work a little bit to get a playable copy. That said, desertcart's exchange process was amazingly easy and efficient. I had absolutely NO problems on the exchange... big plus for dealing with desertcart! Second, regarding the content of the DVD. It is an eclectic mix of animation styles and techniques ranging from shockingly crude to fairly sophisticated. And, though you might not expect this, these jarringly different styles actually hold together. Each style works in the context of the part of the story that it is being used to communicate. And the story is excellent. It is complex, intelligent, mature... this is a story that you can watch about a half dozen times before you've spotted everything going on and figured out how it all fits together. That isn't a criticism of the way the story is told... it is a compliment to the depth of the story. Based on the strength of this series, I actually bought the whole comic book line and read it. This animated series represents the first 1 and 1/2 comic books in the 6 book series. That point represented a break point in the story where the comic books took up a different thread of a more complex story line that it was weaving together. To make it work in the animated series, they fashioned an ending that makes these episodes completely standalone. So, there is an ending. And while the ending to the animated series implies that there is more work to be done by one of the characters working through his own issues, it is a satisfying point to stop. If the animated story is all you are after, it will provide sufficient closure. If you want more, the comic books are in reprint. Even given the extra effort it took to get a playable copy, I strongly recommend the DVD. It is well worth it!

Better than the first original dvd I bought of this animated series
I watched this entire animated series when it was originally on Mtv with liquid television and MTv's oddities. I actually found a dvd for sale many years ago that was something like a vhs to dvd conversion that had a homemade quality and low resolution picture. I don't remember where I bought the first one from but it was definitely not a licensed professional official product. After so many years it became non-readable and the dvd started skipping and freezing as well as the burned written laser reflecting surface started to blister and peel separating from the plastic of the burnt dvd. So I started looking for a replacement of it. It was getting close to 30 years since this was originally on TV and any new copies of the official released dvd were very hard to find After so many years since these dvd's were sold. The episodes are a work of art for the comic art style lovers, and watching a second time with the commentary turned on was an adventure of it's own. If I hadn't made an .ISO file copy of it, if anything happened to the dvd I would definitely be trying to find another copy to buy to replace it.

Finally! The MAXX in all his awesomeness!
I have been a fan of The MAXX ever since I first saw it years ago on Liquid Television. I don't need to talk about the show itself because i would be preaching to the choir. I do want to clear up some things that people have said. 1) I ordered these through Amazon, so I don't know if Amazon made the DVDs and packaging or MTV did since they have them for the same price and it is their show. However, the DVDs are professional quality with real artwork on them. They are silver and do not look like home DVDR disks, so I can only assume they are copied with professional equipment. They play perfectly on my Windows 7 based computer's DVDR drive. 2) The sound and appearance is wonderful. Given modern transfers and equipment, I'm sure it looks better than when I originally watched it on my TV. If you want to quibble about a couple of minor, split-second visual things I guess that is your right. I am too thrilled to have the complete series and have it look this good to care. 3) The sound is just as good as the visuals. Of course all voice actors are outstanding. Finally, there is another huge reason to get this. Amazon puts the online version in your video library right away!! How amazing is that? Not only do you not have to wait to watch it, but you don't have to worry about anything happening to your copy either. How can you pass that up?! For the price of the DVDs you get the physical disks and instant video version to keep in your library. Its as though someone asked me what I wanted and than gave it to me. Thanks Amazon or MTV or whoever is responsible for making that decision. Hopefully more rare things will become available in this way because of on demand manufacturing.
