Tamiya 54358 RS-540 Torque-Tuned Motor

This motor is underrated. Everyone thinks they need to upgrade these to TZ/RZ/BZ 23T or 19T aftermarket or brushless motors. I used to be like that. I have recently used these with the lowest FDR possible in a Tamiya car and then use NiMh, 2S Lipo, and 3S Lipo to control how much speed I want. Tamiya does all of their R&D on their cars with these motors and it is evident. I am seeing great performance by sticking with these over more expensive aftermarket ones. They're also fairly priced.

I only rated this as 4 stars since you cannot replace the worn brushes in these motors. Other than that it has been fantastic for the price. I would recommend it as long as you are not dealing with any water.

These units are very good for the price. Plenty of power. I have two in a 1:96 model Navy ship that have been running for over 5 years of local pond use. A little noisy but perhaps with better insulation from the hull this could be overcome. I tried to use both on a single motor ESC which works ok up to about half throttle then the thermal overload kicks out. Using a ESC made for two motors in my current project. (live and learn).

I purchased two of these for my son’s monster truck. They are just the upgrade he needed.
