Small Parrots

The small size of Hagen Tropican is a perfect size to try on birds, that way I am not heavily invested in a pellet brand that does not appeal to them. The Air Barrier Zipper Bag insures freshness, and the bag seals up tightly after each use. I am fostering a cockatoo that did not get along well with colored pellets, so I thought to switch him over to something that contained no artificial coloring. The Hagen Tropican has been a success and the cockatoo--who had been inclined to episodes of extreme nervousness and terrible night frights--has calmed down considerably. The only thing that has been changed is his diet, and at this time, I attribute the change in his attitude and demeanor to the improved nutrition that he is obtaining in the Tropican. Although, there is a "bubble-gum-like" smell of the granules, after briefly doing my own ‘crunching test’ I can attest that this smell does not translate into the taste, therefore, the Tropican does not taste like bubble gum. I am impressed that Tropican contains not just the usual corn, but also soybean meal, ground wheat, soybean oil, peanut kernels, sunflower kernels, brewers rice, oat groats, flaxseed meal, spirulina, and a number of natural oils and other ingredients that apparently results in higher acceptance among birds that are not necessarily found in other major-brand pellets. Additionally, believing that birds need a certain amount of natural fat and oil for good feather condition, I have also observed that other pelleted foods are excessively "dry." The Tropican formula addresses the normal dry pellet formula with an oil content of 10% (orange, banana, soybean), which is a healthier and more palatable alternative for our pet birds.

I was looking for a different bird pellet (after getting stale product too many times from another well-known brand) and decided to try this one. I saw from reviews that it is not easy to switch foods on parrots and may take a long time to get them to eat new pellets, so I was praying about that. On opening the bag, I was impressed that it had a fragrant, fresh smell and I immediately put some into the bird cages. I have 4 birds, but one, an African Grey, is very transparent if she likes something. If she doesn't like something, she wants to show her disgust by throwing it and squawks until she gets something she likes. She went to the pellets and tasted one, then went back for more! Even more surprising, is that the next day, she immediately went to the pellets first rather than squawking for her "morning breakfast" (softened bird biscuits which she insists on every day). Another bird, a little Senegal, tasted the pellets immediately, then his little eyes dilated and looked funny, but he bobbed his head up and down and he ate some more pellets out of his bowl. So, I was impressed by the freshness of the product, but my birds also seemed impressed with the taste! I don't usually bother to leave product reviews, but this product did impress me as well as my birds!

My blue crown conure is 31 years old. She's been fed with Hari for the past 7 years almost exclusively. I like that the have a complete feed she wants to eat. With the more uniform natural color round pellets, she doesn't toss any out, or refuse to eat certain colors. It's been a great feed, and I'm so glad I can access Hari complete on Amazon since local pet stores don't have it

My eclectus parrot actually seems to prefer this MUCH smaller pellet than the larger one (the high performance sticks). He likes both but will almost always go for these first. I'm glad he eats them but I don't think I would buy either again or buy from this brand again. I think the bubblegum smell to them is unnatural and I'd like to convert him over to organic cold pressed pellets from Birdtricks. If he doesn't take to those then I would probably stick to these since they make less of a mess and he seems to prefer them. They also have more vitamin A than most brands, which I really appreciate for Eclectus parrots. Update 5/12/20: After trying other brands (including Tops and Birdtricks cold pressed organic), my eclectus still prefers this tropicana blend with the small pellets. I don't know what it is about them, but usually he'll eat all of them and just leave the other pellets sitting there. Even when I tried taking them away, he ignored the other pellets and just waited to see these again. Despite getting fruits, veggies and eggs, he usually ditches those and heads back to these pellets. He seems happy with them and his newly molted feathers are growing in nicely, so we'll have to see how they fair in the long term. If I were rating simply on how my parrot enjoyed them, I'd give them a 5. I just wish they were organic and better for him, so that's why they are rated a 4.

I love this product. I love the price. Bird pellets are expensive. I tried all the organic cold press pellets first and she didn't love them. They ended up being pulverized to powder and never actually eaten. She loves the small size despite her being a bigger parrot. She is 19 years old and picky. She instantly loved these. She is a plucker and after a week on this she has already been sprouting new feathers that look so much healthier, which tells me nutritional value is great. Yes organic is preferred, but it doesn't help at all if she won't actually eat them. Smells amazing. Just ordered another bag. Very pleased bird mama.

My GCC and cockatiel both love this. I'm not sure I'll buy from here again because the use by date is only 2 months away. My birds won't get through the bag I have open let alone this one.

I have 4 parrots, 2 of them being GCC's. All my birds eat pellets and changing them over to this brand was not difficult. This is the perfect size for Green Cheeks or even Poicephalus Parrot sized birds. Both my Green Cheeks really seem to love these pellets and they really love making pellet soup. Btw, these pellets we're extremely fresh when they arrived and seem to be of excellent quality and I really trust HARI and believe they have parrot best interest at heart. Just a side note, between all the pellet soup my babies have ever made this smells the worst. I have to change their water about 3 times a day. Regardless, my babies really seem to enjoy it and I know they're getting their proper nutrients from pellets.

Bird , conure, likes it...smells good...arrived quickly

Sur le moment de la commande je n'ai pas fait attention que c'était des granulés. Au final pour perroquet adore, de plus ils sentent bon la banane.
