Powerful
When I first started to read this, I was surprised. I've known that Mr Gregory was an activist and I've known that he was a great comedian. I didn't know the back story though. His recollection of life before, and during, the fame is eye opening and educational. There were passages here that caused me to pause. No, to stop. I had to stop and really take in what I'd just read. These passages spoke to my heart in a mighty way. This is not a difficult read in terms of the words used or the subject matter. However, if you are a person who really gets into the book before you, this book is not one that will leave you quickly. Aptly titled and extremely well written, this is a book everyone should experience.

NOW I KNOW WHY THIS BOOK IS TITLED AS IT IS
A very great and insightful read on the younger Richard Claxton Gregory, from his growing up poor and impoverished in St. Louis, to his prowess as a prep track star, his discovering his penchant for comedy, his stint in the U.S. Army, his making a go for it as a comedian, meeting his wife, Lilian, striking it big as a comedian...to finally finding a further calling as an activist during the Civil Rights Movement. Though the book ends as 1963 gives way to 1964, it is easy to see how and why this book is specifically titled as it is. I also not only learned a lot about this great man...but what also motivated and moved him to excel in the manner in which he did his entire life, which ended last month, sadly, at 85. Yet, though this book wants you to read more...fortunately, there is more to come in the subsequent books he did author...up untilwhat would become his final one, which was released a week ago. I have that one on my Kindle app all set and ready to go. And when I get there, I will write of and on that one as well. But, to get an introduction on one of the foremost personalities and sages this world ever produced, this book is a great place to start.

Enjoyable Read
I enjoyed reading this book about Dick Gregory. Poverty made him want more out of life. He sacrificed time with his family to fight for the rights of others. He stood on his own merit.

Inspiring
He talks about the trails and tribulations of the south, how he met his wife, how his career started, college life, and the struggles of growing up in the south during the 40s - 60s. I would recommend this read for junior high students and up.

Wow
I️ just got finish reading this book for the first time and I️ really, really wish it was more to it. Just a few thousand more chapters. The mist in my eyes keep forming but I️ won’t let a tear drop. Thank you so much Mr. Gregory for this book! I️ can’t wait for my son to come up a little more in age so that he can read it also. I️ feel I’ve gained so much knowledge from it and feel a calm I️ can’t really explain. Please, please read this book and then encourage at least five others to do the same.

Highly recommend this book to anyone
This book was the first book I've ever read written by Dick Gregory and it is one I recommend to any avid reader or any young man. Gregory does a wonderful job taking his readers back into his childhood - giving first hand accounts and experiences that have helped shape his perspective and wanting for a better world. The fact that this book was written decades ago but still has portions that ring true today is amazing and it explains why his passion is still so strong. This novel is one that has it's funny moments, moment that will make you shake your head in sad understanding and it will definitely make you think about the way the world sees people of color.Highly recommend it.

Amazing read!!
When I say I finished this book in 3 days it was sooo good. The first chapter really makes u dive into the book. His childhood was so sad and it make u really appreciate things on a different level. I admire his hunger and drive to get to where he wanted to be in life . He also had a dope ass wife because I definitely would not be ok with the things that he put her through . In the end he knew his true calling was to fight for the injustices that we as black people faced then and still face now. It's a very quick read because it's an amazing book that even had a dope ending. 5/5 stars 🤩

Excellent story of a famed civil rights icon and comedian.
A deep glance into the life of a well known man. This is a journey we all need to take to better understand our world and those we share it with. To see where this man started and where he ended up is amazing. At times troubling in its honesty, it paints the picture of the plight of the black American in our country and that of other minorities over time, a fight that still rages to this day.

a title you don't say out loud
the book was recommended by I think Jay-z who found it sharp and funny. Having read this book it really is a warts and all account of what it was like to be black and poor in the land of the free. At least Dick made a name for himself in America (I'd say he's virtually unknown here.I know I haven't heard of him before) which is why he has a book out This book is still humourously written even though a lot of the subject matter is quite dark (no pun intended). It's so good that it makes me want to check out Mr Gregory's comedy. Although I wold like to spread the word about this book to my friends it's still a controversial title that I can't bring myself to say it. Pity. It deserves an even wider audience.

A must read book
This is a brilliant autobiograpghy and a must read book especially in current times where America seems just as racist as it ever was. Dick Gregory has a very good way with words and his commentary on the plight of the african america is both thoughtful and thought provoking in equal measure. I was shoked, angered and entertained throughout this book. Thank you Dick Gregory

Important, and yet funny
He is important as a civil rights spokesman, but he is also clever and witty and inspiring. He is one of my heroes. It's a fine piece of history, and he is a rare treat.
