Ed Emberley's Drawing Book: Make a World

Great gift for kids or adults learning to use shapes to draw
Easy to follow steps to create images! Super primer for introducing the concept of geometry in faces or animals. Fun! Purchased as a gift for a young friend. I used Emberly’s books as a child and glad they continue to be available.

Super fun for toddlers
The artist uncle grew up on this book so he had to get it for his car loving 2 year old nephew. He is constantly asking mommy to draw cars now. Super fun!

Mixed feelings re this one!
There are many Ed Emberley drawing books available especially for children but great for any beginner. This book, Ed Emberley's Drawing Book: Make a World (Ed Emberley Drawing Books), is a compilation of several other of his books. On the one hand, even though several drawing books/subjects are included the book size stayed the same as a book containing only one subject. This means the drawings aren't much larger than a thumbnail. The size may not be the problem for adults as it would be for children. IMO the book should have been thicker so that the images could be larger. On the other hand however, the drawings themselves are cute and it is nice that so many are included in the book. For those wanting to draw/paint miniatures, this book would be especially nice. I'm glad I own this book but if I was buying for a child, I'd buy each book individually rather than this much scaled down version of several books.

I think it depends on the child, but this book is great for my youngest
I started my son with Ed Emberley's Truck and Train book when my son was 4. He loved it! And then started asking me for this one because it's advertised on the back. He is now 5 and I knew he would make good use of it. There are a lot more drawings crammed in this one and the pictures are smaller. So if you have a younger child, I'd recommend starting with another book, because the drawings are so tiny and they'll get distracted by all the other things on the page. This book has about 20 drawings per every 2 pages, whereas our Truck and Train book has about 5 drawings per every 2 pages. He does sometimes ask for help in figuring out a more complex item, but for the most part he is able to work out of the book independently. Interestingly, my 8 year old doesn't seem to get the teaching technique that is used in these books. So BEWARE, this book may flop with some kids. And I'll also note that my 8 year old doesn't seem to like any drawing books, even ones that do make sense to him. He likes to draw, but wants to do things his own way, which, of course, is fine by me. I also have some difficulty with Emberley's style and find it confusing and visually distracting, but as I look at it more and more, I have sort of become used to it and can more easily process the style. But my youngest took right to it and it has provided him hours and hours of entertainment. It has also improved the quality and content of his drawings, which now includes lots of details and plenty of creativity.

Good books but small pictures!
I purchased this as a gift for my daughter for Christmas. She's 9 years old and has recently expressed an interest in drawing, and she's much better than I ever was, ha! I've never seen a drawing book quite like this one though, and unfortunately I'm a bit disappointed in it. It's a sturdy book and well made, but the pictures inside are very small. They do show each drawing step mark for mark, which is great for her. And they aren't TOO small, she can see them fine. But most drawing books have one or two drawings per page, this one has at least 6 per page, so the actual pictures are just small. She didn't even realize it was a drawing book at first until I explained it and she looked a bit closer at the pictures. All in all, still a good book and I hope she gets some use out of it. It does have lots of pictures she can learn to draw, which I suppose is the perk of having so many pictures on each page. I just wish I had known before my purchase that it was like this, but none of the pictures on Amazon or the description mention this. When it said it has more than 400 things to draw, I assumed the book would be pretty thick. It’s very thin actually! I would still recommend it to your future artists, just be aware that it’s a bit more difficult to understand so it may be better for the older kids like mine.

Just what we needed
It's simple and makes complicated drawings accessible for young children. It's exactly what we needed for helping kids follow directions in a fun way.

wonderful tiny drawings
This is a great book for first time drawers, or doodlers of any age. I use this to conduct art classes in cub scouts. I always enjoyed making very tiny drawings in the borders of my notebooks at school, and later as an adult I find myself still doodling during meetings. This book is for those of us who love to doodle. It shows you how to make the coolest little drawings of everything! There are hundreds of people, buildings, vehicles, boats, and animals to draw. And for learning how to draw, there is no better place to start than Ed Emberly! In addition to this book he has the best series of books for learning to draw called "Ed Emberl's Big Green Drawing Book" and he has orange, red, and purple too. He also has the books on specialized items like trains, or animals, but the big books pretty much cover it all along with this one. A perfect set of books for the young artist.(When these books have been learned, and your artist is thinking of improving their skills they can try Mark Kistler's book next, then move on to books by Jack Hamm if they want to become a real artist someday.)As an adult, I still love this book. I love it more now that it makes my son so happy that he can draw such neat things as castles, with dragons and knights in 2 minutes! A 5 year old or younger can easily draw many of the items in this book, as well as an doodle fan of any age. I give this my highest reccommendation!

Fabulous learn-to-draw book
I was given this as a birthday present when I was five years old with the inscription "I wish I'd had this when I was your age". I've now given it to a number of five and six year olds, all of whom have enjoyed it (though sometimes not as much as their parents!)It's packed with a wide range of drawings, from cars and buildings to animals and superheroes, each of which can be created from simple geometric shapes. Ed Emberley also includes lots of variations, encouraging children to experiment once they've got the hang of the basic shape. You probably wouldn't want to draw in this way forever, but it's a great starting point for any budding young artist.

Ed Emberley is brilliant.
Great -I’ve sought out all of Ed Emberley’s books. Bought for an 8y old but we’ve done them together and I’ve had as much fun as she has!

Happy
I stumbled upon Ed Emberley by accident and what a happy accident. These really are how to books, none of that draw a couple of eggs/join up the lines and it's magically an elephant.Ed takes each item in his world apart and shows you stroke by simple stroke how to draw it. It is a simple and hugely addictive technique. Great for kids I should imagine but even better for adults like me who fancy some idiot proof doodling!
