Lee, I recommend you use an old leather belt (Garage sales are great for finding them) and use that with the compound for your primary polishing. I then use the rough side for cleaning the blade before using the fine smooth side for final finish. Your strop will last much longer this way.

What side do i use first for a pocket knife

I use the light side after I'm done sharpening with stones. I don't use any compounds & it's worked great for me

How thick is this strap?

The whole strop is about 1/4” thick, but the leather part is about 1/8” thick.
