Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst fell in love with Staind so hard that he coproduced their major-label debut. This fact should be endorsement enough for the Massachusetts-based quartet's target audience. Although not as heavy on hip-hop influences, singer Aaron Lewis's guttural, dragged-through-the-mud vocals dig into the meaty guitar wall and thrash around the speakers like Durst's band. Dysfunction 's all-you-can-eat buffet of decibels grows a bit wearisome by the end of the album, but a couple of numbers stand up and demand to be noticed. "Just Go" boasts a classically sludgy Mudhoney-like groove before settling into an uncoiling murmur à la Judas Priest. The well-executed moshpit-ready "Mudshovel" gleefully cops from Alice in Chains' psychedelic leanings. Staind's hard-rock epistles are certain to gather the band a devoted following. --Jason Josephes Staind: Aaron Lewis (vocals); Mike Mushok (guitar, background vocals); Johnny "Old School" April (bass, background vocals); Jon Wysocki (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington. Personnel: Aaron Lewis (vocals); Mike Mushok (guitar, background vocals); Jon Wysocki (drums, background vocals); Johnny April (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Terry Date. Recording information: Studio Litho, Seattle, WA. Staind's big break came in 1997 when the band opened up for Limp Bizkit in Connecticut. 20 minutes before Staind was to go on, Limp's singer Fred Durst tried to have them kicked off the bill. Fred thought they were Satan worshippers due to the nature of their cover art. After Staind's set, Fred said they were the best live band he'd seen in two years. The rest is history. Produced by Terry Date (Deftones, Pantera) and the band, DYSFUNCTION is a dark, brooding, groove-driven record. There are no pretty ballads or acoustic detours--the record slams from start to finish. Durst helped the band develop their sound and encouraged lead throat Aaron Lewis to sing more and shout less. The result is some fine, powerful vocalizing. Fans of heavy music will relish Staind's cathartic angst and flock to the sonic attack that is DYFUNCTION. Review: Lose your eardrums - Badass....as always Review: The 1999 alternative metal scene - If you've enjoyed Staind from any of their other releases and expect something similar in Dysfunction you'd be mistaken. It'd be an understatement to say "it's a little more gritty". However if you expect something good in relation to say korn or maybe even some of Drowning Pool's better stuff then you've hit alternative metal gold. This is their only album as far as I'm concerned. It's disappointing to see them go from this to immediately sounding like 3 Doors Down or Nickelback etc. etc. Alot of reviewers seem to be ecstatic about the song Mudshovel, and while that song is excellent, the four tracks preceding it are of equal if not greater value. Give this one a chance if you're big into the 1999 metal scene.

A New Classic
Staind may have not broken any new ground with this cd. But they made a classic metal album all the same. When this came out nu metal was all the rage and Limp Bizkit and Korn ruled the charts. While that fad has fallen out of style like disco, this cd still stands the test of time. A brutal bashing of down tuned guitar rifts, pounding bass and drums, and shredding vocals. Themes of loss and family issues really show you why they named it Dysfunction. No it's definately not old school metal. But you can't really classify it as nu metal either. Aaron Lewis doesn't rap, the man can actually sing. And scream. Two thumbs up.

Excellent Album, Excellent Service
Let me start by saying that Staind is one of my all-time favorite bands, so the decision to order one of their best albums was unquestionable. Item arrived as described, and was playable. No case/cd cracks or scratches, no fingerprints, it was in excellent shape. Item arrived 3 or more days before set arrival date. I am satisfied. Will do more business with seller (Round3).

My favorite Staind record
Staind released their second album “Dysfunction” in 1999. I’ll admit that when I first heard these guys back in the day I thought they were nothing more than a ‘leech band’ trying to cash in on the popularity of bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit. However, after several spins of the album I was very pleasantly surprised with the honesty and brutality of their song writing, as well as the tight musicianship that the members were able to bring forward on this album. The most lasting impression of this album, to me, is how they were able to take the harder edged sound of “Tormented” and effectively fuse it with a more mainstream and approachable sounds without sounding like sellouts. The album did take a couple spins for me to be sucked in, but when I was, I really was. This album made me believe that these guys deserved a place at the table of the elite of the late ‘90s ‘nu-meta’ genre. The production and cohesion that the band has on this album is maybe only paralleled by “Break the Cycle,” and the songs are all very well polished and written. The treat, though, is the aggressive and vengeful side of the songs that makes them stick with you long after you hit the off switch. Aaron Lewis sounds graceful and poignant throughout the album; the band mimics his grace and determination with their musicianship and power, while the songs make me harken back to the days when I was a young lad soaking up any and everything that rocked hard. Here’s the bottom line: if you like Staind in any ways at all, this album is a must-have. There is no way to be upset or disappointed with this release. This is my favorite Staind album, and it’s the one that got the ball rolling for this talented band.

Great album
I actually just purchased it to replace a long lost stolen one and to get the Amazon Autorip version as well. Funny thing, when I received it, it had the Wrong Album artwork and cover....! lol. Not even sure how that happens. It was for a totally random Aussy band. The disc was correct, but boo, no cover. This jewel case will likely end up in a closet anyway, so no harm no foul in this case.

one of the best albums from staind
this is the first album i believe and one of the best. it has a lot more growling and screaming then his second album which is way more mellow. this album is the best. i got to see them in concert KoRn/Staind at the sick n twisted tour in 2000. it was great they played the songs off this album.
