30 Days of Night

Realizing that people have different opinions about what they read and watch, and that not all will agree with each other on what's good and what isn't, I was still somewhat surprised by how many viewers didn't find the horror movie, 30 Days of Night, to be as great as I did. I'm usually pretty hard on horror flicks and don't expect a lot when I go to see one, but 30 Days of Night won me over in a way that left me stunned at the end of the movie and wanting to immediately see it again. Directed by David Slade, the story takes place in Barrow, Alaska (a real town), which is in the northern part of the state and once a year experiences thirty days of night. Most of the town's people head south for the entire month, but there are enough humans left to entice a group of roving vampires to spend some quality vacation time there. It all begins when a stranger arrives (played wonderfully by Ben Foster) during the last day of light and cuts the telephone lines and kills the sled dogs so that the remaining town's people will be snowed in and unable to escape the wrath of his master, Marlow. The vampires then waste little time in attacking the town and killing every human being they can get their hands and teeth on. It's the town's sheriff (played by Josh Hartnett) and his estranged wife (played by Melissa George) who manage to gather the surviving citizens and to find a place where they can hide from their hungry predators. The problem, of course, is finding a way to stay alive until the sun once again appears after thirty long days of night. That's going to be the challenge and few are going to make it. I thoroughly loved this movie and have watched it about twelve times, enjoying every single viewing. Though I'm not a big fan of Josh Hartnett, I bought him as the sheriff and found his character to be totally believable. I also felt that all of the other actors did an excellent job as well, especially Danny Huston, who played Marlow, the lead vampire. He was utterly terrifying. I thought the vampires were played true to life in that they were portrayed as savage, violent predators, killing everything within their grasp so that they can feed on the blood. They were unbelievably fast and didn't hesitate in taking someone's head off, separating it from the body with one powerful sweep of their clawed hands. The desolation of Barrow was captured perfectly by the set designer and director of photography as the camera took in from above what was happening below as dozens and dozens of people were massacred in different parts of the town by the marauding vampires. This movie had me literally sitting on the edge of my seat and jumping in all the right places. In many ways I thought this was the best horror flick of 2007, running just ahead of the film, 1408, with John Cusack. With regards to the DVD, I think I was close to being the first person to buy it when it eventually came out. I was hoping the movie would be released in a Special Two-Disc Collector's set, but it only came out as a single. Bah, humbug! Still, there's a great featurette on the making of the film, containing interviews with the cast members and crew, plus a look at the real Barrow, Alaska. The strange thing is that when the DVD came out, my roommate's daughter was getting ready to fly to Alaska with some friends, and I kept trying to get her to watch the movie before she left. She told me NO! in a rather loud way, not wanting to have nightmares the whole time that she was there, freezing in below-zero temperatures. I would've gone to Aruba, myself! LOL. Anyway, this film certainly has a special place in my DVD collection of horror films. Highly recommended!!!

Love this movie!! It’s a vampire horror thriller type of movie. If you have a thing against blood, do not watch. If you don’t mind it then you are good.

Before watching this movie, my idea of a vampire was a seductress/seductor who lured their victims into a facade of romanticism only to become obvious prey at the end with no escape. After watching this movie, my concept DEFINITELY switched! Now THIS is what you call a vampire movie. The writer takes the viewers back to the original premise of the true nature of a vampire. SPOILER ALERT: The writer was original with his execution of the vampire trope. The thought of placing this in Barrow, Alaska where it is dark most of the time during the year is a brilliantly, carefully articulated plot development. This town was the perfect hunting ground for man-hungry, blood thirsty vampires. The vampires are sinister looking which is the one thing that sets them apart from the vampires in other movies. Their intent is obvious and unmistakable. Their attacks leaves no room for plea as they are gruesome and bloody. Ofc they leave behind a few survivors to increase their numbers. One case, which in my opinion is the scariest part of the movie, is a little girl. Watching the vampire girl drain the life out of her mother is a spine shivering scene that has haunted me redundantly for weeks. Scene well done but scary asf! It was at this point I asked myself when the next person was going to die, not if. The end is so bittersweet! The survivors conquered the vampires but through the one thing that can conquer evil & Ill intent: love. Eben sacrificed his life by injecting himself with vampire infected blood so he could defeat the vampires. He did this to save his ex-wife, Stella, life. His love for her drove him to be the sacrifice for the other survivors. I cried like a baby when the sun ate him away at the end! Very good movie!!

I have the dvd, but I rented it anyway. Solid acting. Good plot. Good movie.

Wonderful vampire movie

30 Days of Night ofrece una propuesta original dentro del género de terror al combinar vampiros con el aislamiento de una ciudad que permanece en oscuridad durante semanas. La atmósfera es inquietante desde el principio y mantiene una sensación constante de tensión y peligro. Las actuaciones son sólidas, los efectos visuales son impactantes y la historia logra mantener el interés durante toda la película. Destaca especialmente por su ambiente oscuro y por presentar vampiros aterradores que se sienten realmente amenazantes. Es una excelente opción para los fanáticos del terror, el suspenso y las películas de supervivencia. Una película entretenida y memorable que vale la pena ver.

I heard of '30 of Night' starring Josh Hartnett and Melissa George and it was very positive. I decided to order it for myself. It was delivered a couple of days ago and tonight was my first viewing of it on blu ray. The movie is about a small town way up North that regularly experiences a month of daylight and a month of night. I recall doing a scuba shoot in Alaska during their 30 days of sunlight period and boy was that strange. Definitely took some time to get used to. Well, now it is 30 days of night in the town and they are somehow invaded by very unique appearing vampires who devastate the town's 530 person population. The few surviving folk must somehow outlast the 30 days in order to live. As a horror film, this one beats most of them by a mile. Forget all those Elm St, Halloween, Saw and slasher films; this one grabs you by the gonads and doesn't let you go. You really do stay on the edge of your seat manifesting a determination to outlast the 30 days, the vampires and the suspense and anxiety. 30 Days of Night is far superior and more effective in creating both the horror of the situation and the terror the survivors must deal with. I found the video quality to be excellent. Even in the snowstorms and the darkness the contrast is perfect, very sharp and detailed. While not the most colorful of films, where color is needed (lots of spurting neck blood) you see it right there. I wasn't terribly conscious of the audio mix. I failed to notice much surround use; guess I was too engrossed the movie. Dialogue was very transparent and easy to grasp. So now you have a very positive review of this film to go by. I totally enjoyed it.

Love this movie. I've watched it sooo many times, and I never get tired of it. Great story and premise.

This is an excellent action-horror film, concerned with the locals of a small and remote town trying desperately to survive the assault of a gang of rabid vampires. The story takes place in a desolate Alaskan town in the arctic circle. For 30 days each year this town experiences total darkness, known as a 'polar night'. The locals are well prepared for most eventualities, and are stocked up with supplies while being effectively cut-off from the rest of the world. Unfortunately this particular polar night is being taken advantage of by a coven of the undead! As the sun sets, the vampires start their attack on the town. The local sheriff (Josh Hartnett) and his estranged wife (Melissa George) do what they can to protect the townspeople who are being fed upon by the feral super-powered vampires. The plot is simple and straightforward. It's a story of survival set in the frozen wastes of Alaska, during what seems to be perpetual darkness. If you enjoy vampires as monstrous and ferocious night stalkers then you'll probably like this film. This isn't "Twilight" or "The Vampire Diaries". There's no sexual dimension to the creatures of the night in this movie. It's a well made and well acted film, and the setting - the arctic - adds a chilling effect to the horror. Overall, I highly recommend this movie.

La versión de Reino Unido únicamente incluye audio y subtítulos en inglés. Para aquel que entienda este idioma es la edición ideal ya que su precio está muy por debajo de la versión española. Yo la adquirí en una bajada que pegó a poco más de 3€. He de decir que aunque sea un fan del género de terror, las películas de vampiros nunca han sido mi fuerte. Sin embargo, esta película me ha encantado por su estructura y su atmósfera. Calidad de imagen y de sonido sobresaliente. 5.1 real y no "ficticio" como ocurre en muchas películas. Incluye numerosos extras tal y como se puede apreciar en las fotos, aunque la edición española incluye exactamente los mismos.
