Is the bag a softback or hardback? I'm looking for a bag that will stand up on it's own without collasping immediately.

It's a softback. The entire bag is made of a canvas fabric. It's an excellent bag, but it will not stand up on its own.

Would this bag fit a laptop with these dimensions? 15.20 x 10.20 x 1.40 inches

yes it'll fit a laptop that size, but the zipper might not close. that's almost exactly the same size as the laptop I carry in it now

What are the dimentions of the bag

how does this handle rain? will it easily soak through if you get caught out there during a storm?

I had this bag with me when I got caught in a downpour while visiting New Orleans and the outside did get soaked (as did I). However, the inside is lined with a plastic/nylon-type material, so nothing in the bag itself got wet. And the outside dried out fairly quickly.
