Synopsis A brand new restoration approved by David Lynch. Includes 6 art cards Extras: Back to Mulholland Drive On the Road to Mulholland Drive Interview with Naomi Watts & David Lynch New interview with Laura Harring New interview with Mary Sweeney Interview with Angelo Badalamenti Intro by Thierry Jousse In the Blue Box Review: 'Let's Take a Drive'..(with plenty of 'Extras' in the boot). - Mullholland Drive (2 DISC edition - 2017'StudioCanal')... OK to start with I hadn't seen this in nearly 20 years (yes I know, but there's been a lot of films made in last hundred years..) I can't comment on previous DVD editions, Bluray releases etc..I can only state (as I remembered,it is an excellent film, but what put the film in my 'have to get' list?...Basically the 'New Restoration', good looking extras, & it's low price.. The Film(140 mins)on Disc1 has '5.1audio' & optional English subtitles, it's ratio is 1.85:1..& 'filmed on Fotokem'....it's worth mentioning the DVD does not have any 'chapters'( as some people may find this not to their liking)... To me the image quality is very good, the night time 'Hollywood lights' shimmer beautifully ,the detail & the films various 'Colour Codes' Is clear & the harsh look of some of the later 'real life scenes' do stand out.. The Cover line stating 'Brand New Restoration Approved by David Lynch' may not just be a bit of 'promo-nonsense'.. So to the Extras..The 2 most recent are a(13min) interview with Laura Harring ,who still looks & talks very much like an old 'studio system, classic Hollywood' beauty...& a very interesting (16min) section with regular editor(& co-producer) Mary Sweeney, where she gives Some good details regarding Lynchs working process & a bit about digital editing.. The (2015) interview with David Lynch & Naomi Watts(25mins) is also very worthwhile where amongst the usual 'gushing Hollytalk' there are some very honest statements from Ms Watts, particularly regarding her love scenes & her problems with 'the masturbation section'- as usual David Lynch is concise, polite & helpful. He explains in some detail the failure to get it 'on TV' as a pilot episode for a series & its subsequent journey to becoming a Film.. The rest of the Extras date from 2002 to 2010... The earliest feature(23mins) has scenes & interviews with various production & cast members 'On Set', & it appears they are already aware they're working on something that may be 'of lasting quality'.. .'Back to Mullholland Drive'(24 mins) is an interesting analysis (with various scenes from the film) that 'decodes' the story & what's 'dream & what is reality' & the 'Objective & Subjective' ...See if you agree with the Findings.. This & other sections originate from Alain Sarde/StudioCanal+( who helped finance the film) and are French productions (with English subtitles).. The 'Intro with Thierry Jousse' is a(10min) section with the former editor of 'Cahiers Du Cinema' magazine(it's safe to say the film made a big impression on a lot of people)...& as Lynch says the 'main story' isn't hard to follow & understand (but possibly not on a First Viewing) A(16min) section with the composer of the wonderful musical score Angelo Badalamenti ,who has a good 'cameo' in the film is enjoyable ...& the(27min) feature 'Into the Blue Box' features director Richard Kelly(donnie darko) & other mostly French directors, documentary makers, critics etc is another good extra.....& this still leaves a brief deleted scene ( as Mary Sweeney states the first 'Rough Cut' she assembled was around 5 hours, there is obviously much more footage & scenes somewhere...) Some brief 'promotional interviews' with Lynch & the 3 main characters- I haven't mentioned 'lead actor' Justin Theroux who does appear in various previously described sections.... & not forgetting the discs come with 6 postcard sized pictures... A great film ,a fine quality print, plenty of interesting extras, some nice piccies ,all at a good price..what more could you want?...(er..possibly a commentary & a trailer ?)....but even without these it's still a '5 stars' package for me... Review: This is the version! - This is not a review of Lynch's masterpiece as enough has been said in praise of this extraordinary film: rather it is to compliment the newly re-mastered 2017 Blu-ray edition. I have the 2015 Blu-ray edition and the markedly superior Criterion Collection Blu-ray edition. This latest edition is, however, surpasses both the respective picture and sound quality of even the gorgeous Criterion edition. It is an absolute marvel and makes Mulholland Drive appear dramatically alive and almost like a completely new film despite my having watched it many times including twice at the cinema. There is a dynamic of both colour tonality and sheer detail that leaps-off the screen in even those darker scenes, and the depth of field projected is utterly sensational throughout and breathes new life in to such iconic scenes including: the prowling camera work inside Aunt Ruth's flat; 'that scene' at the Winkies bar, or the weird and enigmatic meeting with 'the Cowboy'.. I thank David Lynch and his associates not only for the genius of the film, but also the work in making viewing this masterpiece at-home an even greater experience in 2017. Bravo! In a nutshell: this particular Blu-ray edition is mandatory for any lover of this film and/or Lynch's extraordinary work.

Hard to follow!
I watched the film out of curiosity as it seems to be highly acclaimed, albeit with some controversy. It is an interesting film and very unusual, with some great dreamy cinematography. It is very surreal (typical Lynch!) and thought-provoking and wide open for interpretation. Viewers who prefer a clear storyline with a resolution are likely to be bemused and frustrated.

diamond performances in a confusing backdrop
I am not buying that the roles were switched to show the fakeness of LA dreams of stardom . I think they were smoking too much weed and the scripts were mixed up. Some fantastic acting and direction. Memorable . Confusing.

Dazzling direction but you'll have to 'google' the plot.
masterful direction by David Lynch but takes some figuring out. I found James Joyce's Ulysses easier to understand

Perfecta

Weird but engaging as is to be expected of a David Lynch movie
If you have never watched the Twin Peaks TV series or any David Lynch movie, Mulholland Drive might not be to your liking. At the end of the movie, you might utter – What the fxxx was that about?! Before touching on the movie, I will explain how the earlier works of David Lynch made me decide to purchase the DVD from Amazon. David Lynch stories can be confusing and take some getting used to. Back in the early 1990s, I gave up watching the original series of Twin Peaks after two episodes. For the next 30 years, Twin Peaks was never on my mind but in 2021, I ordered the DVD from Amazon. This was followed by another DVD having the sequel made 20 years later. I changed my mind about Twin Peaks. I have now come to appreciate the confusing creepiness in both the original series and the sequel. The creepy segments take place in a mysterious Red Room where you see weird people speaking in a very weird hair-raising way. Twin Peaks has its influence in Mulholland Drive where there is a strange creepy segment in a theatre called Silencio where the entertainers (if they are human entertainers and not demons) speak and sing in Italian. The theatre has red curtains just like in the Red Room of Twin Peaks. A midget who has frequent appearances in Twin Peaks also shows up in this movie. The first David lynch movie that I saw came a few years after I gave up on the Twin Peaks TV series. It was Eraserhead – a strange title for a very strange movie that confuses but leaves a lasting creepy impression. This was what motivated me to buy the Twin Peaks DVD after I found out (after so many years) that the series was produced by David Lynch. Having liked Twin Peaks and knowing what to expect from the master of weirdness, I decided to buy the Mulholland Drive DVD. I won’t comment on what the story is about except that the two protagonists are young women – one aspiring to be a successful actress and the other is an already established actress. They are played by Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring. I am not familiar with either actress. Those who love to see two women baring their breasts and kissing one another on the lips will want to watch this movie. Not for kids. The women are not necessarily lesbians. The theme of the movie isnt about gay love; I think it is about ambition and guilt over a crime committed in pursuit of fame and fortune by an aspiring actress. Don’t take my word for it for I am still a little confused but happy to have watched this weird movie. There are two things that almost made me want to give this DVD four stars instead of 5 – it does not have a scene selection function and there are no English sub-titles when Italian is spoken and sung in the Silencio theatre segment. What did they say and what are the scenes about? Non capisco. Molto strano. For a confusing movie like this, scene selecton function is important because the confused viewer might want to watch certain scenes over again and again. It helps also for those who want a repeat viewing of the bare breasts scenes. I like Laura Elena Harring better but it’s only because her twin peaks are larger and more shapely but that’s just a personal preference. Thanks Mr. Lynch for the eye candy amid the confusion. If you are confused after watching the DVD, you can look up on a review on the Internet titled Mullholland Drive – Simply Explained. Avoid this spoiler review if you have not seen the movie and are thinking of buying the DVD. The creepy confusion can be fun. It was for me.
