Good Quality
Reasonably easy installation if you have a little mechanical ability. Picture clear day or night. Still learning the many adjustments that can be made to customize the recording, remote viewing, and alarms, but overall, it's a fairly user friendly system if you have the patience and a little computer knowledge. The included disc has the manual on it for step by step instructions which is very helpful. The cameras are very solid and durable. Good product for the price I paid.

First security system; easily set up and working.
First thing after opening the package I looked for detailed installation instructions. There are none. Only thing included on how to connect the system is a one page pictogram of the wiring instruction. fortunately this is all you really need to connect to the DVR. What is daunting is figuring out HOW to route the wiring and how to conceal it on your home. I would suggest to anyone that has not installed wiring to really take some time to plan out the location of the DVR and how you are going to get the wire from the camera to the system. I have not installed all the cameras yet; only three on the front of the house. the back yard cameras are more difficult installation and I will update when I get that accomplished. I picked the best locations for the first three cameras and laid out the 60ft of cable that comes with each camera. 60ft is a LOT longer than you expect and I had easily 15'-20' left over by the time I ran the wire from outside to the rear of my home. I decided to run the wiring behind my aluminum siding and that was not as easy as I hoped. I had to loosen several pieces of siding to get the wire behind it and then reattach. I suggest you watch several videos on how this is done to get a feel for what is entailed (vinyl siding should be easier). Next, I attached the cameras to the selected spots. I used the wood trim to mount so I didn't have to use the wall anchors. The kits come with a paper template to use for screw locations. The template DID NOT match the camera hole positions! The camera top two holes have keyways to assist in hanging the camera before tightening the screws. When camera is hung the bottom two holes don't align and too high. I suggest using the template to drill top two holes, hang the camera and then drill bottom two holes once in place. Caught this after first camera and wasn't an issue afterwards. I drilled from exterior into the garage and ran the wires to the interior laundry room where I connected to the DVR. Plug in all connections and voila! All systems functioned perfectly! I used the video to align the cameras and tightened them down using supplied Allen head wrench. System has been running for 24 hrs and both day and night video is EXCELLENT! It even rained last night and the system handled it beautifully. PROBLEMS: I didn't want to run hard cable to TV's so I tried an AV Xmitter/receiver setup (extra cost). Doesn't work as the picture scrolls vertically (on TV only, monitor hard wired to VGA connection is fine) and snowy. I blame this on the Xmitter/receiver not the DVR. I tried to use a router extender to connect to internet (again extra cost) and could not get a signal from the laundry room to the router. Again, I blame exterior equipment for my issues not the Defender System, but it is still causing some frustrations since all of the monitoring must, for now, be done from the laundry room. I suggest you take the time to consider ALL your wiring needs to include LAN and external video connections when determining your DVR setup location. All in all this system more than meets my home security needs and is definitely one of the better buys for ruggedness and easy installation.

If only the wire would install themselves in the walls...
This camera system is just what i was looking for. The quality is great for the price. The system is easy to configure once you get the wires run. I had alot of trouble with this because i have an old house with some plaster walls. I will need to purchase one wireless camera since i can not get cable to one of the areas that i would like to have a camera. The DVR is small and easy to hide. The cable is thin except for the ends which need to go through the wall. As another review suggested, it would be great to have small quick disconnects on the ends of the cable so that the size of the hole that needs to be drilled can be smaller. I has to atleast tripple the size of the existing hole that i had from an existing network camera which i cripmed the end on after putting the cable through the wall. So far i am happy with the system. Hopefully this system will last for a long time to come.

Don't by this if you want to see details like faces and license plates
Terrible product. After contacting support, I found out that the 16 channel has a more limited recording resolution than the 4/8 channel - not documented anywhere. In live mode, the cameras have limited resolution and cannot be used to make out a license plate or facial features at only 4 feet away in daytime. The software interface is clunky. I returned this and will wait until I can afford a nicer DVR system and higher quality cameras.Pro tip: after I purchased the system, I started searching YouTube for examples of recordings from the kit. I wish I had done that before, as they demonstrate the poor quality of the unit. Do some checking in forums or YouTube for demonstrations or still shots that will provide you with a better idea of the camera quality.

decent, but don't expect 4k. you get what you pay for.
Have had this system installed outside in Leduc, Alberta for the past 2 years. Temperatures here fluctuate between -40celcius and +40. Overall a good system for the money however finicky and the cameras are rather fragile. One camera just plain old didn't work out of the box the other has a flickering image problem that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.The other two cameras work as advertised i've caught thieves stealing things in my alleyway. The cameras will record on loop for the max hard drive space so with only 2 camera's i'm using i can get about 6 months at full resolution of loop.Navigation of the menu's in the system are easy enough but could be refined a bit better. Night vision works well enough. At full resolution these camera's won't read clear enough to obtain plate numbers from 25 feet out. Not the end of the world but enough to obtain faces and deter theives.Replacement cables are hard to come by. defender uses a proprietary system ,of course, you can't order the right fittings and they don't make it very clear on their amazon pages. Extension cables don't work as replacements.
