No amp needed, the sub powers the speakers. However, I would recommend the Logitech z506 instead. I have both and I regret purchasing the acoustic audio speakers. Logitechs are better sounding, louder, more durable, and easier to set up.

Is there a way to plug in an mp3 player such as an iPad or iPhone?? This would be for my mom for Christmas... Easy to use, good sound, etc.

Yes you can it comes with a couple cords to plug into your tv or iPod or mp3 player through the headphone jack, or works very well and they are a really high quality system for the price.

No optical, no Hdmi, luckily i had (red & white) audio out jacks on the back of my tv. I hook everything to tv then tv to stereo
