Great soft serve machine!!
I purchased this machine and was dissapointed cause didnโt receive instruction or recipe book but they had instructions and recipes in pdf! I have to say I am really pleased with this machine! It made excellent soft serve! I bought powder mix on Amazon and it worked amazing! I am so very happy and will be trying other recipes!

Not perfect, but makes delicious ice cream
I bought this on a whim. We used to have the same type of liquid-filled bowl for our Kitchen Aid stand mixer but misplaced it somewhere along the way. This is the same concept, but it's a full-sized machine with a soft-serve style dispenser. Having owned it for just under a week now, I must say that I absolutely love it. I've made two batches of ice cream so far, one a maple cinnamon vanilla and the other chocolate. Both were as tasty as anything at the ice cream parlor. I definitely read as many Amazon reviews as I could, and it really helped me with my first batch to know what to expect. Pros: - Simple set up. - Great set of initial recipes included. - Makes delicious ice cream. Haven't made frozen yogurt or sorbet yet, but I can't wait. - Easy to clean. Cons: - Large footprint. Even though it's a handsome machine, not exactly something you want to keep on the counter, especially if, like me, you have limited space on your kitchen counter. - The dispenser is cool, but the lack of height makes it sort of challenging. I find myself having to dip my head down near the dispenser to make sure I'm getting it into the bowl correctly. - A fair amount of ice cream gets left over on the mixing paddle, and it's a bit tough to get it all off. - Ice cream comes out pretty soft and melts quickly. But if you leave it in the bowl for too long, it can't come out of the dispenser easily. So why am I giving it five stars? Because it's reasonably easy to use and it makes PHENOMENAL ice cream. I solved the soft and melty problem by putting it in a wide-mouth mason jar and sticking it in the freezer for a few hours. The resulting ice cream is as good or better than anything you can buy in a store. I'm not kidding, the simple combination of milk, cream, sugar and flavoring creates superior ice cream, even better when you realize there are no preservatives or strange ingredients you've never heard of (guar gum, anyone?). And, as a dad with two small kids, the ice cream making process is heaps of fun for the little ones. I feel like our days of buying ice cream from the store are behind us, at least until it breaks! I do recommend reading a handful of the more helpful Amazon reviews, as they give a pretty good idea of what to expect. The main things are to make sure the bowl is completely frozen (we have a chest freezer in the basement which is a perfect place for the bowl to live) and to understand that it takes a minimum of 20-25 minutes to make the ice cream. Enjoy!

Fun machine for soft serve experiments
I've enjoyed using this machine for over a month now, generally a couple of times a week. All of the prior reviews with suggestions helped quite a bit, especially the recommendation to get Ben & Jerry's book of ice cream recipes. Those recipes have turned out the best for me; I particularly like the recipe with raw eggs as an emulsifier. I understand that many are reluctant to use raw eggs these days but, fortunately, the salmonella-laden eggs didn't make it to my market! The eggs give the ice cream better consistency. As a kid, I briefly worked at a soft serve ice cream stand, where I served up cones from a commercial-grade machine. The Cuisinart Ice-45 is NOT that kind of machine, so I did not expect it to deliver the same consistency. It takes about 22-25 minutes to reach a consistency I like, and at that point, it basically plops out of the machine in spurts 2-3" long. I wish it flowed steadily, but it seems to be a function of the stirring blade--as it goes around inside the machine, it blocks the flow briefly. That's my chief complaint about the machine. That said, I like that I can make fresh ice cream with fresh ingredients so I know what I'm eating. Sometimes I just use it at milkshake/Wendy's Frosty consistency. Often I chop up some fresh peaches in a bowl and top it with the dollops of ice cream dropping out of the machine. I've put the leftovers in containers to freeze - the consistency isn't so great when I hard freeze it, but the flavor is great. I haven't had trouble freezing the bowl -- I've left it for 12 hours and it's frozen solid, but I'm sure the time depends on the freezer temperature. As long as I wash and freeze the bowl immediately after making ice cream, it's ready again the next day. If I had to serve a crowd, I'd buy a second & third bowl. Since the bowl is about half the price of the machine, I haven't bothered yet. Overall, a good product for a small price.

Absolutely love this!
Love this! I read a great deal of reviews before using this and as many stated to do, I also believe the trick is to have the bowl in the freezer for quite awhile before use. I received my product on a Tuesday and after washing all the detachable items, I put the freezer bowl on one of the the very back shelves of our upright freezer until our first use four days later. After about 25-30 minutes, this maker dispensed soft serve ice cream just as I had hoped. (See picture) I used the classic vanilla recipe that was in the included booklet for our first attempt and we were not disappointed! Cannot wait to try more recipes!!! It is VERY easy to assemble as well as easily taken apart to be cleaned. I would say it took less than 10 minutes to clean everything and put it away and less time to assemble. We were very pleased with the results and my best piece of advice is to freeze that bowl in the back of your freezer for as long as possible before use and don't be so quick to dispense when operating! You can see through the partially open top just how the ice cream is looking so it was easier to judge based on what I could see. It has some noise while operating but nothing that would drive people to run from the room. ;-) It is rather tall so plan on a large enough storage space but it easily fits back into the Cuisinart box it comes in if you're like me and prefer to keep "specialty" appliances boxed in their original packaging for storage. I am so glad I finally decided to purchase this.....lots of fun sugary times ahead for our family!

DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM CUISINART!!!! They do not stand behind their products!
I purchased this item as a Christmas present for my grandson. I paid $70.30. This machine worked once. After the 1st time it leaked everywhere. I called Cuisinart Customer Service 2/22/2017. I was told that they would send me a new one with a paid shipping label to return the broken one, and it should arrive in 7-10 days. 4/12/2017 I called to check why the new one had not arrived. I was told that the 1st customer service representative was new and gave me the wrong information, and that I had to pay the shipping to return the old one, and the shipping to get the new one. I then asked for a supervisor. Her name was Erica. I told her that it was ridiculous to expect me to pay all that, and at this point I just wanted a refund. She said that it is the policy of Cuisinart not to issue refunds, and not to pay for shipping (Per Erica:If you read your warranty, it states that they don't pay for shipping-but you can't see that until you purchase and receive the item!). She was willing to pay for the new machine to be sent out, but only after I paid for the shipping of the broken machine, and returned it. The box to return is big, heavy (over 9 pounds) and expensive! I paid for this item in good faith, it only worked once, their customer service representative gave me misinformation, no one let me know that there was an error and that a new one wasn't going to be sent out. This is terrible customer service, and a terrible business practice. They know you won't pay to ship the item back, and therefore they get away with manufacturing a poor quality product! I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM CUISINART AGAIN! In the long run, just paying the shipping both ways would have been a cheap fix for them, and it would have shown good faith on their part. They would have had a customer who would have bought other products in the future. Not now, lesson learned! DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM CUISINART!!!! They do not stand behind their product!

OKAY product - I own a softserve business
First of all... - ignore all the reviews that state this machine is hard to clean and has lots of parts. I don't think they are corresponding to the current machine being sold as of May of 2019. I find this unit entirely easy to clean. This machine is very rudimentary. It has no cooling process - you provide this by freezing the bowl. There is also no sensor checking the consistency of the softserve, therefore the freezing process may make it to the desired state, but if you don't serve at that time you will blow right by it to a "too-frozen" state. Tips and tricks and learnings after operating this product: 1. Make your pre-mix and refrigerate it - do not pour warm product into the mixer. If you do this you will probably not reach your desired consistency. 2. Buy two bowls - If you want to dish out more than 5-8 servings, you will need two bowls... with a downtime in-between of 2 days to refreeze each bowl. 3. Do not fill the mixing bowl with your mix - I have found the best option is to go maybe 2/3rds of the way full or less. The mixing bowl cools down too quickly and can't handle a full load, you will never get to the right consistency. 4. Wait wait wait. If your dispensed product is watery, keep waiting. It seriously takes 20+ minutes until it is right... And then, be sure to dispense it within the next 5 minutes or it will thicken up and become frothy. 5. Two bowls - As stated in #4, it takes 20 minutes to prepare this once you start the mixing.... Therefore if you are having a party where you want to dish out 10-16 bowls, keep in mind that the second group of people will get their softserve at least 20 minutes after the first group, due to the slow freezing process. In summary - this is a good product for me to test out flavors for my real machines that cost thousands of dollars and run on 220v.... but this is only a good product for home-users who only ever want 5-8 servings, have patience and have access to softserve mixes or does their own. We have done successfully the Dole Pineapple Whip mix that you can buy on Amazon. It is good, but can get very whippy in the mixer.

Wonderful Soft Serve Machine! Totally worth the money
We just used this machine tonight, and we are VERY pleased with it. I read through all the 48 other comments on this page before buying, and was a little daunted by the negatives, but we promised the kids to get the machine, so we took the plunge. Thought we would need a second bowl since we have 7 kids, but found it not so. We used regular sized Keebler Waffle Cones, piled to the top but not beyond, and everyone got one (even Mom and Dad) with a couple of the bigger eaters getting seconds. Here are my observations: 1) The bowl gets plenty cold if your freezer is plenty cold. Folks down below who claim they had cold freezers and their bowls didn't get cold enough ... don't know what to say about 'em. 'Cold' is one of those things that either it is, or it ain't. Enough said. I started dispensing after 15 minutes, because I was afraid the bowl would start warming up, but as I got to the last cones, I noticed the ice cream continued to harden and look more "professional" as it dispensed. Next time I'll wait until 20. After the bowl had been out of the deep freeze for 40 minutes, we rinsed it in HOT water, and the water froze solid to the bowl. That's cold. 2) The mix in thingy worked perfectly. I couldn't believe how neat-o that was. Follow the directions on sizes, and you won't go wrong. 3) I took the advice downstream and avoided the Cuisinart recipes. We just used our family favorite old fashined vanilla, with the raw eggs, flour, salt, sugar, milk, and cream. No problems. I made our usual 6 or so quarts that we put in the full-sized ice cream freezer, so we have left-overs for tomorrow. Final analysis: Cold freezer, follow directions. That simple. Sucker works like a charm. I had kids hugging me and thanking me for buying the machine - it doesn't get much better than that.

Takes some time to do it right, but well worth it!
This thing is freaking awesome. My husband is kind of a DQ addict and it's very nice to be able to make it at home (at a fraction of the price). There are some recipes that come with the book. Forget them. There are some Junkett mixes you can buy that will do in a pinch. But here's how to make PERFECT DQ copy cat ice cream: Mix 1 tablespoon of Gelatin in a 1/4 cup of cold water Warm 2 cups of milk, be careful not to scorch it. Turn off the heat before it boils. Add Gelatin Mix, 1 Cup of Sugar 1 teaspoon of REAL vanilla and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the Milk. Mix it well and allow it to cool for 30 minutes. Add 1 1/2 cups of cream to the cooled mixture and place it in the fridge for 8 hours The mixture turns into a kind of milky, ice cream jello. It's kind of alarming at first, but trust me, it'll be good. Mix it in the ice cream maker for 30 minutes. Be sure the bowl is frozen solid and you keep the mixer away from the sun or lights that produce heat. Yes this is time consuming and takes planning, but remember, you have to freeze the bowl for about 12 hours to get your ice cream to freeze anyway. It's totally worth it. I'm not kidding. You can make a Peanut Buster Parfait by layering hot fudge, spanish peanuts and ice cream or my favorite, the pecan mudslide, which consists of hot fudge, caramel, salted pecan pieces and, of course, ice cream. The above recipe is perfect for about 4 DQ treat-size servings or 8 small cones. I don't think it's great for cones, it doesn't come out in a nice neat stream, maybe because I make the ice cream so thick. But, we're not in it for cones anyway. The one complaint I have about this ice-cream maker is that there was a little piece on the condiment slide that was broken upon opening. A little super glue fixed that right up. Speaking of the condiment slide. You can use mini M&Ms, mini chips, chopped nuts, or sprinkles with it. Anything larger will clog it up. Also, it won't hold liquid condiments like chocolate or butter scotch. It works by dropping the mix-ins down a chute while the ice cream is dispensing. It's kind of a cool feature, but I don't really use it.
