Can i brush this on or do i have to spray?

Add lacquer thinner for brushing. 3 parts lacquer, 1 part thinner, use quality natural bristle brush and watch videos on how to apply. It brushes just fine. Makes a great coffee table finish.

Can I add a catalyzer to it for spraying and if so any suggestions?

If using a spray gun you dont need to thin it beyond what it comes in the can here, if your airbrushing it and need it thinner just use lacquer thinner, but with a hvlp gun its unnecessary

Is there something special about the musical instrument formulation? Can this be used for a high quality desktop?

The instrument laquer formulation is made specifically to go on thin to an instrument becoming a durable finish that promotes good transmission of sound. In terms of finishing desktops it is an Old Fashioned Furniture finish that was used for many years but it's now fifty or so years out of date. That application it will prove to be soft and susceptible to scratches and wear. A better choice would be a high-quality modern urethane. It will give you the finish and type of wear characteristics that you need for your desk.

What is the percentage of nitrocellulose solids by weight/volume? Need to determining if your sealer or this has higher nitrocellulose solids.
