I'm Learning Japanese! takes a lighthearted approach to the Japanese language by using fun anime-style manga characters to teach Japanese. The book starts out with the main characters, Emily, Nico and Teo sitting on the grass after school, minding their own business, when―unbelievable!―a giant talking fox dressed in a kimono appears. Explaining that he knows magic, speaks many languages and is respected as a sensei master, he wonders if the three kids are ready to learn Japanese from him. During the next 128 amusing pages, the three friends learn to speak, read and write Japanese, while also taking breaks to try Japanese hot-spring baths, sumo wrestling, Zen meditation and more. Focusing on exactly what the 9 to 14-year-old learner wants to know, this book is carefully set up to allow them to learn Japanese independently, at their own speed, without an adult's help. Though fun and lighthearted, this book is incredibly practical as well. By the end, students will master reading and writing the entire Hiragana alphabet, Japanese sentence structure and 23 key Kanji characters. Review: Perfect starting point for those who want to learn. - This book is a great starting point if you want to begin learning japanese. While it is aimed towards children it is also perfectly suitable for adults too, as beginning from a simple child like point will make things easy to get the hang of before moving on to more complicated books. The book follows the learning journey of three kids as they are being taught the japanese language by their kitsune teacher and his tanuki assistant, adding in plenty of entertaining elements throughout to keep things interesting. It also touches on some elements of japanese culture too. It goes over learning hiragana symbols, a little bit at a time, then uses what you have learned to form simple words, then moves on to using those words to form simple sentences. It never feels like it is throwing too much at you at any given time. It uses repetition to try to get the words to stick in your head, for example you will learn the japanese words for house and yard, then you will constantly see those words used again and again throughout the book so that it never has a chance to leave your head. After you have learned all of the symbols of the hiragana chart you will move on to learning about numbers and a few simple kanji characters. Of course do not expect to learn everything from this book, this is made to be a starting point for children after all. But you should learn enough from this book to feel comfortable moving on to bigger and more in depth books afterwards. Review: Children’s Japanese language book - Really good book for a child with an early interest in Japanese. Very engaging with the Manga themed characters and contains lots of beautiful pictures as well as words.

Great foundation of Japanese for those with no previous experience
Awesome book for beginners. Simple enough for children to get a grasp of the basics but also useful for adults looking to dip their toe it too. Not too complex, easy enough to follow, even for those with no previous knowledge. It teaches Hiragana, one of the Japanese writing systems, as well as simple words and sentences that can be used in everyday situations. Can be used by adults or children as long as they have a basic understanding of English and can read at a basic level or have an adult on hand for explanations. Great foundation to build upon for starting your Japanese language learning journey 🙂

Fantastic for kids and adults
Just started and it’s brilliant. I have previously learnt phrases and just memorised them but they didn’t make sense to me, but this explained why and it was light a light switch turning on. The book is aimed towards younger children, but some of the words may be a bit complicated for them but rephrases it again and gives examples, so if you didn’t understand now you do. If it can teach children it can teach me.

Great book to introduce you to Japanese learning
This book is a great introduction to learning Japanese. I was really surprise of how much I was able to read and use the language after I worked with this book. I use it over and over again and I actaully both a copy for my Japanese teacher for him to use with other students. The introduction of hiragana, vocabulary and th particles is well done.

Nice book but lacking on grammar explanations
Questo libro è carino per iniziare a imparare l'hiragana e il Giapponese, però essendo per bambini non spiega bene la grammatica che bisogna cercare su internet o su altri libri. This book is nice to start learning Japanese but honestly speaking it lacks of grammar explanations since it is for children. So you need to learn grammar elsewhere, on other books or apps or online...
