Durable, Reliable, Long-Lasting
We use these a lot at both my jobs, and they're very good heavy-duty markers. I go through markers pretty fast, and these last quite a long time compared with some smaller ones like standard Sharpies. That being said, another equally reliable marker that's a little cheaper (although out of stock at the time of this review) is the Sanford Eberhard Faber marker. Check them out, and if they're not available or not cheaper anymore, then get these. Either one is great.

B A R R I E R S......N E E D E D......B Y.......E V E R Y O N E...!
.Well, at least they are "barriers" needed by everyone who owns books!WHY do I say that these AVERY MARKS-A-LOT CHISEL TIP PERMANENT MARKER SET, RED, PACK OF 12, (98017), are "barriers", needed by EVERYONE who owns most types of books today? Because, (and this is going to be a very very l..o..n..g... explaination...but please bear with me...the knowledge in this introduction is easy and essential to understand) -- because....very sadly, most types of books today are printed on SULPHITE PAPER! Sulphite paper, (in varying grades, from newsprint, on upwards), is the subject of a PBS doctumentary entitled "SLOW FIRES". Sulphite paper, you see, actually DISINTEGRATES__OVER__TIME__( ! ) Hence the title of the doctumentary,(which delineates the pro9blem, and how public libraries, especially, are trying desperately to solve it). But individuals have private libraries, too -- and if most of those who frequent Amazon.com, are like me, they have quite LARGE libraries.Libraries of PAPER books, that is. "Kindle", and other E-readers, solve this problem handily -- but old habits are hard to change, and the reading of books one holds in one's hands is at least as old as the Guttenberg Bible....and perhaps goes all the way back to Ancient Egypt, as well... Old habits ARE hard to break, and though many, many people do like E-readers, some people, even after having bought a Kindle, (or etc.), report that they just "miss the feeling of holding a book in my hands". But it does give one pause, to think that "the book in one's hands" COULD so easily just disintegrate in the next 20-30 years....Another way to fore-stall book disintegration, (as outlined in "Slow Fires"), is for book manufacturers to use the newer, "acid free" paper in printing their books and magazines. You would think that most manufacturers would do this, (and deservedly boast of it) -- because "acid free" paper does NOT disintegrate over time, and COSTS JUST AS MUCH TO PRODUCE AS NON-ACID-FREE PAPER! But I seem to sadly see, more and more, cheaper and cheaper varieties of sulphite paper -- even in VERY important books). This is because, though manufacturing sulphite and acid-free paper costs the same, THE EQUIPMENT for manufacturing acid-free paper is NOT the same as the equipment for manufacturing acid-free paper. So, any manufacturer who wants to switch, will have to make a one-time purchase of new, acid-free paper-manufacturing equipment. Yes, it is a quite expensive one-time purchase....but worth it, I think, in public relations and good customer relations for the book publishers, and, of course, quite a lot of happiness on the part of "consumers", (or rather, CUSTOMERS, as I prefer to call us), as they know the books they buy will now be a more lasting purchase!Until this is done by the majority of book publishers, however -- what is a buyer of ink-and-paper books to do? Well, if you are old enough to remember buying, (or are younger, and have also bought), OLDER, paper-back books here on amazon and elsewhere, you may have noticed a curious thing. The very FIRST "pocket-books" to come out, (in the 1920s, I believe), had RED INK ALL AROUND THEIR EDGES. In the 1960s, some paperback book publishers switched to yellow, then orange, and/ or green ink, to put all around the edges of THEIR books. A curious reader might want to know why....The answer is quite simple. If you're old enough to remember "window-dressing", wherein owners and employess of various stores put out some of their wares in the windows of their stores, to entice possible shoppers to buy this merchandise, and other similar thngs inside -- you will also remmber that many shop windows ALSO featured a plastic, light-orange plastic, on the inside of the windows, close to the pane.THIS LIGHT-ORANGE PLASTIC, ON THE STORE-WINDOWS -- AS WELL AS THERED, YELLOW, ORANGE, OR GREEN INK ON THE EDGES OF PAPER-BACK BOOKS, WASDESIGNED TO DO ONE THING: __________________KEEP SUNLIGHT FROM DESTROYING WHAT WAS WITHIIN!So, if you have ANY books, now, (paperback OR, sadly, an increasing number of today's hardback books), GET THESE AVERY MARKS-A-LOT CHILSEL-TIP MARKER SET, RED, SET OF 12, (98017). If you have a LOT of books, get 2 dozen -- AND__PLACE__A__RED__BARRIER__TO__FURTHER__DISINTEGRATION__OF__YOUR__SULPHITE__PAPER__BOOKS__AROUND__THE__EDGES__OF__THESE__BOOKS!It's possible, of course, that you might prefer yellow, orange, green -- or even blue colour, (which I've never seen around the edges of any book....but why not b,lue, if you like it?), around the edges of your books. I myself prefer red, because I think a complete set of 12 red, (or blue), markers is easier to find than a complete set of 12 of yellow or orange markers, and red was, for some reason, the colour that Pocket-Books chose, in the 1920s, to put on the edges of their first paperback books, (my dad had some in his library, so I know of them first hand. Alas...even the PAPER for paperback books was better then....) Whatever colour you decide to buy, note that the chisel-tip of these AVERY markers makes it faster to put the edges around your books....and since the ink IS permanent, your "barrier" will stay on the books! The price is good, as well!Of course, puttng such a "sun-barrier" around the edges of a book made of sulphite paper will only post-pone disintegration of these books -- not prevent it or eliminate it. But, for sulphite-paper books you do own and do treasure, post-ponement of disintegration by a few years, lengthing their lives, is certainly better than doing nothing. It enrages me that not only do many book publishers continue to use ever-cheaper forms of sulphite paper -- but that they have STOPPED putting coloured ink on the edges of even paper-back books! Talk about not-caring about customers! Well, sadly, it does seem it's up to us customers to preserve our own books! And, really, it's not that difficult a thing to do! For better and deeper penetration on the edges, "spread" the edges of the pages a bit apart with the thumb of one hand, before applying the marker with the other hand. Your books will thank you for this, by lasting somewhat longer than they would otherwise!I sure wish more publishers would "get wise", and publish their books on non-acidic paper! (C'mon, guys -- new equipment for making acid-free paper is only a ONE-TIME expense....and who knows, maybe, (just maybe), you might be able to take this "business-improvement expense" off on your corporation's income tax???? (I am not too cognizant about the corporate tax laws myself, but it stands to reason that, if the tax laws are as "fair" as they are said to be....you certainly should be able to do so....now or, at least, in the very near future!)And.....side from saving books, these high-quality Avery Marks-A-Lot, Chisel-Tip Marker, Set of 12, 98017....has many other uses, as well! : )
