The Performance Breakdown:The Flat Platform Side: Unlike older Shimano hybrid designs (like the A530) which could get incredibly slick in the rain, the EH500 features a textured aluminum body that accepts threaded traction pins. Shimano includes 16 screw-in pins in the box. Once installed, they bite perfectly into the rubber soles of normal sneakers or skate shoes, providing zero-slip confidence even when wet. The SPD Clip-In Side: The single-sided SPD mechanism operates with classic, crisp Shimano precision. It features an adjustable spring tension screw on the back. Out of the box, it’s set to a relatively light tension, which is excellent for anyone transitioning to clipless riding or navigating stop-and-go city traffic. Counter-Weight Balance: A common issue with dual-sided pedals is having to constantly "fumble" with your foot to flip to the correct side. Shimano got the weight distribution right here. Because the flat side is slightly heavier, the pedal predictably rests at a specific angle when you unclip. Once muscle memory kicks in, pushing forward automatically catches the flat side, while stepping straight down catches the clip. I am new to cycling shoes and clipless pedals. I wanted to find something that provided me with more flexibility. These pedals have the traditional flat size for standard shoes, but also offers a clipless option. I read many reviews, with some stating to just go full clipless. Reviews also referenced a feeling that it can get annoying to make sure you're on the correct pedal side. After using this pedals for a few weeks, I can agree with the last sentiment. While wearing standard shows, at times I find myself on the wrong side of the pedal and I have to take the extra time to flip it back over. However, today I purchased clipless mountain bike shoes and tried these for the first time. I felt like this was a game changer. When these were first installed, I was told do dial the adjustment back to 0, and then rotate 3 clicks forward. I was told this would provide the most flexibility for clipping in and out for a beginner. I found that advise extremely helpful and I love these pedals. I had no issues clipping in and out. I didn't fall and I felt very secure while riding. While I wouldn't choose these if I planned to primarily use the flats, it provides a great option for primarily using them with cycling shoes. I would highly recommend them to a bigger or someone that wants extra flexibility.

I wanted to have the versatility of either wearing shoes, sandals, or actual clipless shoes whether commuting or for leasure and these are my go to. Installs fast; it’s got an Allen bolt to adjust tension. Cnc machined build looks like it’ll last for very long; I’ve installed these on 2/3 bikes!

I bought these to use with my new high-end Specialized carbon fiber E-Bike (Turbo Vado SL 2.0). I used to race bikes so I'm used to clipping in and out of pedals. I have only used the clip side of these pedals so far with my MTB shoes but I like having the flat sides in case I want to casually cruise around the bike path next to the river here. It's good having options... These pedals look big and heavy but they're actually not. The "spikes" on the flat side will hurt if you catch them on your shins (don't ask how I know that, ha ha.). If you're never going to clip in, then these aren't the pedals for you but if you'll use them like I do, I highly recommend them.

SPD side is good for clipping in. comes with a SH-SH56 multi-release clip. easy to clip in and out without drama The flat side is nice for either normal shoes, or just getting going without clipping in yet.

My wife and I have used Shimano SPD pedals for years on road, gravel and even mountain bikes, so we are very comfortable with the Shimano cleat system. We recently bought new electric touring/gravel/fitness bikes (Specialized Vado SL) that we use all the time for general fitness but they are also great when friends and family visit. These pedals make it super easy to allow us to use our regular shoe cleats on one side, but a visitor can flip them over to use non-cleated shoes with no issues. A great innovation and we love them.

Excellent pedal set. Put on my gravel bike for mostly sport touring miles. Great having the flat pedal for quick rides with regular shoes or in tight start stop town rides in bike shoes not clipped in. As a Ragbrai rider these are perfect for entering and exiting towns. As for the quality they're smooth bearing wise and light for this dual pedal type. Genuine shimano clips seem a little better than previous non shimano pedals. They look like sleek road pedals.

I simply love these pedals. I bought them because I was looking for a beginner-friendly clipless option without losing the comfort of a platform for other rides. They're perfect! The platform is smaller than regular pedals but still big enough for my feet to feel great. The clips are fantastic—easy to get in and out of, and so far, I haven't fallen off the bike. You only have to get used to flipping the pedal sometimes if it's on the wrong side, but I find it easy to do without looking down. I fully recommend them.

decided on these for their dual purpose - with cleats & without! absolutely delighted - these fit my matt black bike and unlike other reviewers the colour difference is not that obvious. pins are fab - add grip to the non cleat side. cleat side is easy to clip in/clip out. not a bulky pedal and great for my UK size 7 feet!
