Movies (And Other Things)

Bought this book for the fun topics and cool visuals both of which are delivered but in the first few chapters alone there are evident factual errors that have made me stop reading. The first of which is in the Kill Bill section which he inaccurately speculates on the make of O-Ren Ishii's sword which in itself is more annoying than anything but the second mistake makes me wonder if there even was an editor. In the Gangster Draft section he lists that a Blackjack scene featuring Joe Pesci from the movie Goodfellas is in the top 10, the reason this is a mistake is that there is not a blackjack scene in Goodfellas, the scene he is referencing is in Casino. Writing a book must be hard but an error like that is inexcusable, best way I could put it as missing an easy free-throw. Hopefully an actual editor will go in when it is time for a paperback and tighten up what should be a fun read. As it is now, I just find it frustrating.

After reading The Rap Year Book and Basketball (And Other Things), I was excited to pick this one up. However, there is so much fluff in this book it is hard to recommend. There is very little actual substance, and Serrano spends most of his chapter setting up rules by which to discuss the thesis of his chapter, and then breaks these rules immediately and repeatedly. This would be fine if his analysis or comedy was anywhere beyond knee-deep.I can't help but think that this finished project is much more rushed than his previous iterations, and I am generally disappointed by this endeavor by Serrano. As always, Arturo Torres, the illustrator, absolutely kills it.

I came across Shea's work on the ringer. After reading a few unique and hilarious articles I started to notice his name. Pretty soon after that, I started to regularly check the site for his articles specifically. I am not a basketball fan, but when I saw he wrote a movie book I was pumped. I am also not a writer, so putting his style into words is tough, but let's go with rad. It's funny, logical, and each chapter is self contained. Perfect for a dad like me who knows a lot about movies, likes to laugh, and has limited uninterrupted time to read.

Shea Serrano is what GRR Martin wishes he could be. A prolific Chicano writer (BAOT, Rap Yearbook, Rap coloring book, a wedding thing) with a penchant for looking at media the way a stoner would but without the clutter. There hasn’t been anything this beautiful since Selena (R.I.P.). You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll buy another for your friends. 5 stars all day for Shea.

I woke up today thinking winning the lotto and getting married to a supermodel were the best things in life, until I read this book. It belongs in the smithsonian, the greatest piece of literature can be yours for a price this cheap??? I should be charged for felony robbery for getting something this valuable for this price.

Don't take my word for it, just smash that buy button and find out for yourself.But what if you don't like books? I'm not sure why you're reading the reviews for a book if you don't like books or reading, but hey, smash that buy button anyway. Just put this book on a table or bookshelf and let people know how smart, funny, and good-looking you are. This book sends that message.Even if you don't want people to think you're smart, funny, and good-looking you should still buy this book. Why? Because Shea is one of the best people around, and this book is cool, and we should all be supporting cool people doing cool things.

This is a great book for every generation of movie fan. I purchased multiple copies to gift because the entire catalog by this author is beyond compare. Vamos por Vida!

The thing that I fully didn't expect from Movies and Other Things, how it might make me feel... and think. When Shea's discussing the MCU with his boys (I have 3 sons of my own), there was definitely a nostalgic element to it and an "ah, that's really cute" vibe.But several of the footnotes connected to me in a way that started making me think about bigger things like what I'm going to start imprinting on my boys now that they'll remember after I'm gone. Like the disconnect between Tony Stark and a bird dying. Why did one stick with them or affect them more than another? And how Coco made them cry, but Tony Stark passing away didn't.I still remember the day I told my son that his great grandmother had passed away, and how I slowly watched his heart break into a million different pieces. Will he feel the same way when I'm gone? Or will I be Tony Stark?Anyway... I've probably said too much for an Amazon Review, but buy this book. There are a lot more places throughout it that will give your brain and heart some space to explore very important questions.And you'll laugh. A lot.

Short little chapters you can rip of at your leisure. Quite enjoyable.

If a recommendation from the Rock and Barack Obama aren’t enough... This book seriously answers silly but deeply important questions and is an absolute must read if you like movies and/or other things.

Amazing book, it may be even better than BAOT!

Awesome book, fun read. I now have a few more movies I need to go back and rewatch! Thanks Shea, great stuff!
