Active crossovers are used by almost every sound reinforcement system and every recording studio monitoring set-up; but the use of active crossovers is rapidly expanding. This new edition, presents all the updates to loudspeaker technology and crossover design. The edition expands on loudspeaker configurations and design issues, sound reinforcement issues, more on lowpass and highpass filters, and may other filters. This new edition is a must read for anyone wanting comprehensive practical knowledge. Review: All you need to know about crossovers in one book - 1 Everything is explained. Everything 2 While it is about active crossovers, covers everything you need to know about passive crossovers too Note: active crossovers are not for everybody. If you not want to deal with SEVERAL power amps per speaker - they are not for you. But this book might force you to reconsider. And if you do - you will not regret Review: Brilliant! - I own every book written by Douglas Self, I even re-buy the books when a new edition comes out, thats how much I appreciate his work. This book is no exception, it covers cross-overs and active filters in depth and considers advantages and disadvantages of several topologies, this is I believe the thickest of all his books, so a lot of content is packed in there. As always, the only downside I see (as with his other books) is the lack of math, I believe that the author may try to appeal a wider market, its even proudly anounced on the back cover that he avoids complex algebra and math is reduced to the bare minimum, I understand that some amateur tinkerers may feel discouraged if they see some math, but the more well versed engineers will find this rather disappointing, some circuits are presented "as is" with certain values and no mention of how he obtained such values, so you either take it as it is or look some place else, im not asking for Laplace transforms or differential equations, but brief equations on how to calculate the main parameters. He does describe how to re-scale filters for a specific frequency (all are pre-calculated at 1 KHz) and there are some exceptions in which he does provide some brief formulas and algorithms to calculate some circuits, this is something that I have not seen in any of his other books so kudos for that, eventhou the math is really scarce , this is probably one of his books with more equations, but still missing some, I even wonder if its because he doesnt want to spill the beans. Dont let the title fool you, this is not only a cross-over design book, but also (or even more) an active filtering book, there are some great topologies presented that Ive never seen before, in many cases its better than the traditional active filter books. Mr. Self talks about caveats and topics focused towards audio such as noise and distortion of filters backed up with real measurements using Audio Precision equipment and SPICE simulations. I highly recommend it! Its not only a great resoruce to design cross-overs but also filters in general.

Useful book
very useful. A lot of info on filter design collected in one spot. Nice addition to the library.
