Worth it, if you don't have time to build one.
Look, this would be very easy to build - but you're here because you don't have that time. It's well engineered, with solid wood and locking bolts. You could even add a little wood glue. Yes, the sand will get wet: The under-side is a plastic sheet - with holes to allow drainage. After putting it together, I realized how necessary that is, or it would be completely reliant on evaporating pooled water from 600-800 lbs of sand. That also means that water will soak the sand from the bottom if the sandbox is placed where runoff water pools or flows. The mesh net cover allows for evaporation. I bought a waterproof plastic cover for rainy days, but will generally leave it off because condensation collects under it and holds in moisture. I also took 15 minutes to coat on an additional layer of clear sealant, addressing mold concerns from other reviews. Will probably empty, dry, and refill it once per year (if it lasts). Finally, I would count on 600 lbs of sand minimum (12x 50lb bags). I put in 700 (14x 50lb bags). 900-100 lbs will fill sand right up to the corner seats. Purchase or order sand from a hardware store. Prices on this app are 8x what I paid. Also, note that play sand is bagged with moisture for packing purposes. Account for a little time to dry for your kiddos.

Perfect for our yard
This sandbox has been working great for our yard. It is so much bigger than what we had previously and the kids are enjoying playing in it. The bottom is a clear plastic with holes and I stapled it to the edges because there are a lot of gaps when you use just what is provided. The mesh cover it comes with is pretty much useless because its mesh and you have to tie it in the holes of the box. It doesn't protect much so we bought a separate water proof cover which I would recommend doing.

We enjoy the sandbox!
We love the sandbox except for the particle board it uses. It warped within the first day of being outside so I'm not sure how well it will.come together for next summer after needing to be stored for the winter. The holes were also not aligned well so it took some struggling to build but our two year old loves it!

Loads of fun!
I have two little boys, one of whom is too small to play in a sandbox yet, but I wanted to make sure we got a sandbox that would be large enough for them both once he gets old enough. Those little plastic crab and turtle sandboxes are so cute, but I thought they would be too small. The Kidkraft Backyard Sandbox is just what we were looking for! It's plenty large enough for multiple kids to play, and the bench seats in the corners are very handy. They are sturdy enough for me to sit on, too.As for fun value, my not-quite-three-year-old will play in there indefinitely. He spent hours in it the day we filled it, and about an hour of that was without any toys! The sandbox was easy to put together, and is made of high quality wood. We just put a tarp under it to hold in the sand. The cover works fine to keep out leaves, cats, etc. We put in 15 50-lb. bags of sand, and it probably needs another 2 or 3, just to give folks an idea of how much it will hold.Bottom line, great sandbox and a great way to keep your kids entertained for hours!

Poorly Manufactured
Looks nice when put together but it was such a pain assembling it because several parts were manufactured poorly. On one wall, the vertical supports were drilled in at the top instead of the bottom such that they were misaligned with all of the other walls. I had to unscrew them and chisel the supports off of the wall (they had been glued in as well) and then reattach them to the bottom. Also, the holes in the corners where the rounded pieces attach were drilled in haphazardly so that it was impossible to secure some of the screws.

Great big sandbox for your little adventurers
We have had this sandbox for about two weeks. And the quality of the kit is really great. The wood seems to be a good quality and the seats for the sandbox have held up to constant attacks from our 30lb son. We did not believe that this sandbox would hold 17, 50lb bags of sand. We were wrong about that. I'd say 17 is a little much as we used 15 and it leaves about 2.5 inches of space to the top of the sandbox. But they are indeed 50 lb bags. This sandbox is pretty big. We fit 4 kids in it with plenty of room between them. The wood is treated, but since we live in the Pacific Northwest, we will be treating it once the summer is over. I recommend buying the 6' x 6' Dry Top Black Drawstring 8-mil Poly Tarp Item #500660. We use it every night and have no issues with critters, and it keeps the rain out. It fits perfectly.

Exceptional Value for Those Who Are Thinking to DIY
I was building out my master plans to build my son's a sandbox...perhaps its my need to over-engineer things, but it wasn't going to be cheap and also not the most fun of projects I could be doing. Then I found this Kidcraft sandbox and thought I'd give it a shot. It's now been in place for a month and the kids LOVE it! It was a breeze to assemble and took about 14 50lb bags of sand to fill up. The netting to cover it has worked well through the first few rains and I think does a decent job of keeping critters out, but come winter ill be tarping this off to keep it lasting a bit longer.UPDATE: September 2015So I put this together over three years ago and it's still up and being enjoyed by the kids. I've only had to add sand over the years and that's about it. I didn't bother putting any treatment on the wood and it's still in decent shape and is only now starting to show signs that it may begin cracking and breaking down in the coming years. For the money, this is a great product.

Loved it!
My son received this as a gift for his birthday. He has been playing in it everyday since. It is perfect for him and has enough space for my daughter to play to. My only wish is that it came with a hardcover to protect it.
