Wonderful book for kids and parents!
I love this book and the way it explains animal welfare and the environment to kids. It has beautiful illustration and the story will help kids understand why it's important to not eat animals for all involved.

Vegan kids must have
This was THE book for my daughter. We live in a pretty big vegan bubble and rarely have had to talk to her about dairy or meat, we just don't encounter it all that often. At the store more and more she was catching glimpses of candies and other things and all I could think to say was, we choose not to eat that, but it wasn't a great answer. Or I'd say that it was for baby cows or it was bad food etc, but that seemed to make it more confusing. This book completed that connection for her in understanding that some people, even people we love and normally trust, might be eating things we don't eat, like dairy and eggs, and WHY we don't eat them, and what those things look like. The author is phenomenal at making this pictures and narrative that invites questions and compassion and allows children as young as 2.5 to grasp the ethics of right and wrong and love and healthy eating. Now instead of asking me why we don't buy certain things, she asks if something has dairy or if it is vegan "like us". She asks if someone we know is vegan or if they "eat animals". If youre raising a vegan child and are looking for ways to talk to your children without becoming too graphic or evil, this book was perfect!

please read this w/ your kids!
I read this beautiful, touching book last night for the first time with my 3 year old son. He was so engaged, right from the beginning, which I'm sad to say is not his usual! He asked so many questions about why the animals looked sad, and were in cages. I told him it was so people could eat them later, and he said "but that's not right...I'm going to get those cows out with my super powers!" (and continued to show me his muscles). He also asked me why I was crying. I truly believe that this book opened the door for us to talk about why we don't eat any animals in a way that he could understand, all the while being a visually stunning (and heart wrenching) book. I told my omnivore husband, I'm still working on him, to feel free to read it to our son today while I was at work. Maybe something will click within him and he'll see the sadness that comes from eating animals. Until then, I'll read this beautiful book to my sons knowing that we're doing the right thing. The book also touches on habitat destruction & endangered species, and gives ways to continue to help our world and the animals that we share it with, which was a nice addition at the end. Please, please, please buy or borrow this book, and share with as many humans as you can.

Beautifully written and illustrated
While this book is beautifully illustrated and informative to young readers I returned because my son was a bit to old for the level of content. Perfect for young children to be read to or early self readers. It isn't scary but rather helps young readers understand that animals are here with us and not for us and that they deserve to live life to the fullest with their families and friends and in a loving and caring environment. I hope all young readers discover this book at some point! My son is 10 1/2. The content was not new to him. If this is new content for your older child then go for this, it is a great intro to vegan lifestyle, otherwise I would say it may be better suited for younger readers.

A Great Vegan Resource For Children
I transitioned to a vegan lifestyle in January 2014 and with my kids being 5 and 3, I needed a way to relay vegan information/lifestyle to them in a way they'd understand. This book definitely did the job. It's not graphic but it does show images of sad animals in a perfectly kid-appropriate way. Now my children understand that pain and suffering -- and ultimately death by slaughter -- occurs in order for one to eat meat. The wording is easy and understandable and the art is very appealing to the eye. I was so happy with this book that I went on to purchase another of Ruby Roth's books to further convey the vegan message to my young children. I absolutely recommend this book to parents looking to do the same.

Great teaching book!
My toddler boys enjoy learning about all kinds of animals. This book has beautiful illustration on each page and really great information on why we don’t eat animals! As a vegan family we strive to teach our kids the why behind our choices! Thanks for a great book for both kids and parents!

Informative
We love this book for my daughter. Upon reading the reviews I was maybe a bit critical when it came to getting it as many people thinking it's too much for their kids. I personally dont find any problems with it. I dont find it too harsh or the pictures too gruesome. While it doesnt go into the heavy details or detail in photos, it does depict what the animals go through, and I personally dont plan on sugar coating real life, empathy should be felt and desensitizing shouldnt be encouraged like it is through many shows even.I find this this book light but informative for a young mind.

Not perfect for younger children but a great resource!
This book gets very real. I like that it focuses on the quality of life of factory farmed animals and environmental impact instead of just the ethics of killing animals for meat. I love that it explores details about each animal in its natural habitat (I learned a lot!), giving us a chance to get to know and appreciate their inherent worth. The illustrations are unbelievable. I wish it was a little shorter or more concise so my kindergartener could make it all the way through without getting distracted. I'm grateful that he was concerned and engaged through most of it. He handled the disturbing truths well but I can see how many would not. I'd love if there was a companion book for younger kids that was just about getting to know the animals and left the more grisly details for me to handle over time. This book is great for older kids. Overall a good resource but requires a pre-read and careful assessment of its appropriateness for the individual child.

Lovely book and illustration
This book is fabulous. I am vegan as is my 6 year old and he had some idea about why, my 5 year old was less convinced. This book has really helped them both understand their food and choices and why we don't eat animals! I have also used it to help explain to other children who ask about it.Very well written and lovely illustrations and O would say suitable from a young age to 10ish.

That's why we don't eat animals

Just as expected
This book is just as lovely as I have expected. The book doesn't spread the violent facts we know about animal slaughtering. It rather concentrates on the fact that all living things strive to be alive, and so all living things should have the same rights. The social aspect is the one that also made be become a vegetarian and by now a vegan and I am very glad that I found this book. There's so much misinformation and prejudices concerning this topic, but I experienced that people with the oppposite view on animal products took a curious glimpse into the book and gave it credit.I also love how it is illustrated. It's a children's book, but definitely one that appeals grown ups. .Be prepared though for comments as "This is inappropriate for children.". Everyone has to figure out for themselves but personally I think, that children are curious and open-minded and way more sincere than many grown ups. Children are often shocked when confronted with where the meat comes from. They will accept it eventually because they watch the poeple around them taking it as being "normal". It's definitely not harmful it you tell your children the truth in a gentle way. This is exactly what the book does.
