It does what I bought it to do
I figured with the negative reviews there'd be lots of refurbs. Sure enough there are. I don't see the problems talked about in these reviews. This replaces a similar Proctor-Silex machine. Unlike some similar machines the Hamilton Beach does not have a means to use Keurig style pods, it's loose ground coffee only. I don't see any evidence of water leakage or coffee grounds spillage while in use so I don't know what those reviews are talking about. The coffee when freshly made might be a little hotter than the Proctor Silex unit and as hot as I'd want in an insulated mug. Otherwise it would be too hot to drink. I'd buy it again.

Perfect For Individual Coffee Making
My wife and I have very different tastes when it comes to coffee and this handy little machine is perfect for our needs. It's got a slim profile and takes up minimal space on our kitchen countertop while having the capacity to brew a 'large' 16-oz single serving. It's simple to operate and shuts itself off after it's done with a simple "Brew" button to activate it. The double metal mesh filtration does an excellent job of keeping the grounds in place and makes cleanup a breeze. They only require a quick rinse under the faucet and a wipe-down of the brewing chamber with a paper towel to keep things running smoothly. The scoop capacity allows us to customize the amount of grounds used in each 'cup' brewed, which is important as she's a 'strong and black' drinker while I prefer mine to be less powerful and mix-and-match creamers for different flavors depending on my mood. It works quickly, taking only a couple of minutes to brew and dispense the cup, and the temperature is hot but not scalding. The two-minute cool-down in between brewing cups means we can enjoy our own preferred drinks together on the weekends while still making that quick cup on demand in the mornings before the workday without having to fight over who goes first.

Nice little single cup brewer without the Keurig waste
I love this thing. Im still using it over a year later. We wanted a single cup brew for my office that wasn't as wasteful or expensive as a Keurig and this hits the mark. Light and small enough to move easily. Coffee is made quick and taste great! We opted to use paper filters along with the mesh filter that is included, otherwise we did get quite a bit of grounds in our cup.

Basically the worst coffee maker that looks nearly identical to the best coffee maker (read review)
This has to be the worst case of bait and switch ever. I love the idea of "The Scoop". The convenience of a Keurig, but with no post consumer waste and way better coffee. The first generation "The Scoop" which was all chrome looking from what I understand was great, but lacked a removable water tank and you had to refill it with every cup. The second generation was FANTASTIC. Removable tank. Selectable brew size. "Bold" mode. This third generation looks close enough to the second generation that you'd be tempted to think it was the same item. FALSE. I bought one for my mom since I loved my own 2nd gen so much. The 3rd gen is about on par with one of those crappy en-suite coffee makers you find in a cheap hotel. The 3rd gen brews a large by default. If you want a smaller cup, I KID YOU NOT the recommendations per the instructions is to unplug the coffee maker?!?!?! Cheap cheap cheap. Such a bummer they discontinued the 2nd generation. This new one sucks and should be avoided.

So far so great!!
2nd edit: XMCOSOCS single serve coffee filters are ‘sometimes sold together’. They seem small. Do they work. Rufus doesn’t know and there’s no way to get any kind of response from Hamilton Beach. No answer to my emails about replacing a filter my cat chewed up, or paper filters to line it. Help!Edit: no parts available for this product. I followed the trail and apparently if you need something you have to buy a new machine. Our cat thought our filter was a chew toy. We won’t bother with Hamilton Beach anything anymore. My husband has been using a 12 cup just for himself for years. He finally started drinking less and throwing a lot out.He recently visited his cousin. They have a Keurig and he fell in love with the idea.I wasn’t crazy about the $$$ but as I searched I discovered single serve coffee makers can have a reasonable $. I ordered two. A habit of mine when I really don’t know what I want.Being single serve he was able to try them together since he he typically drinks three cups a day.The other brand wasn’t hot enough. This one is perfect. There are reviews not liking the splash. I consider it minor. It’s pretty much at the top of the back and of course there are always drips after you pull the cup out just like a large coffee pot. I don’t mind doing a quick wipe of the back, and the drip plate comes out and it’s very easy to wipe out.I’m grateful to have more counter space. It’s very easy to move around. I much prefer white appliances in the kitchen. It’s much brighter and appears more spacious. He’s very happy that his coffee has that strong Louisiana flavor. Community Coffee. I call it his Cajun coffee. Far too strong for me!!One extremely important factor about this sweet little machine is that it come with a permanent double filter. (The 2nd one catches any extra grounds, though that hasn’t happened. Put them out, empty the grounds, rinse. We have a drain strainer that catches everything so no grounds go down the sink.NO PLASTIC GOING LANDFILLS! You recycle? Great. But do you know how much energy recycling requires? There are machines with more bells and whistles but this one is perfect for my husband. It always pays to have a happy Honey.
