Excellent quality - strong and reliable
I debated for a while just how much to spend on this lock - it was for a side gate to our house so didn't need to be a top quality security lock, but it did need to be good enough not to rust and seize up like the one we inherited when we bought the house!I think we made the right choice as this lock is heavy and strudy, and the number dials on the base are still moving very easily after about 5 months outdoors (ie. Feb ->July). The lock itself is opened by pushing the clasp and base together and this is still working as well as the day we bought it which is great.(If I was being picky I suppose the number dials on the base are slightly small, those with fat fingers might struggle, but then again there isn't space for larger dials unless you go for a more industrial size/strength!)FURTHER UPDATE - JULY 2015: This is a top quality lock! Still shiny and smooth to operate... finally a lock that doesn't rust and stick! :o)FURTHER UPDATE - AUGUST 2016: Still shiny and smooth to operate... not even had to use WD40 or anything on it!

Solid reliable hardy padlock
Solid and durable padlock. Sits on our side gate and gets hammered by all weather conditions and doesn't notice it. Gets rinsed and dried out every 4 months or so, and it's doing fine. Even in wet conditions, the notches on the dials for each number are easy to rotate. Once unlocked, you can change the number before re-locking (So you can open it, hide the opening number, and leave it for the next person to lock for example on their way through if needed). This one's doing better than cheaper versions before it, and hope it stays that way- the extra cash seems to have worked

Solid - but check the shackle dimensions are suitable for the intended use.
Good solid body and shackle. Combination relatively easy to change using the tool provided. Be careful to check the shackle dimensions to ensure that the lock will fit in/through the item you wish to secure. I bought this lock to use with a Keter 1200 litre 'Store it Out Max' storage unit and the lock was completely unsuitable - shackle too thick to fit through the pre-drilled hole and too short to give any clearance even if it had fitted. (My own fault as I should have measured beforehand). Consequently am unable to comment on the durability or weather-proofing of the lock as I have not actually used it.

Very solid padlock
Very solid lock. A very determined burglar could get through most defences but this will deter most. Even bolt cutters would struggle with this hasp. The instructions for setting the code are minimalist, to say the least, make sure the lock is open when you put the key in. It's not too obvious which way to turn the key, either I was lucky or it doesn't actually matter which way you turn it. Only just bought it so no idea about how long it will last but spraying with an aerosol oil every month or so will hopefully keep it going for years

Good value but quirky
Reasonably robust and O.K. for weather resistance. Some people find the numbers hard to read and move, but if you lubricate them occaisionally they last well enough. One word of caution on resetting the code is that the mechanism can stick especially on new or corroded locks. So you think you have set a new combination, removed the key and randomly change the combination to lock the padlock. As you are doing this you feel a slight click and the padlock has set itself to a random code and is now useless. I now first use a known code eg 1111 and check that works and carefully move the dials 1 number away to make sure the mechanism is free before moving to my desired code.

Lock failed and Abus support is non-existent
There are not many of these branded long shackled combi locks. I thought an Abus product would work well and prove reliable as I have a few of their other products (bike locks, cable locks etc). It proved to be a very fiddly lock to use. The small wheels were rather stiff to move and the numbers soon became hard to read clearly. After 18 months the lock stuck closed and no amount of messing with the combination (e.g. trying adjacent numbers on the wheels) would get it unlocked. It had to be cut off with a grinder.I thought Abus would offer support or warranty so I contacted them twice using their website contact form explaining the situation. Abus didn't respond.I have since bought the Squire lock as shown in the picture and it has been in use for 6 months. I can report that it's so much better than the Abus lock. The wheels are large and clear and move easily and the lock has a 10 year guarantee. Squire is also a British company.
