The main raw material is special lacquer extracted from lacquer plants in tropical plants. It is characterized by its graceful and elastic finish, and strong coating and adhesion. Can be used for float bodies and rods. It is also very durable. If you polish with a compound for finishing, you can get a moist luster and a more elegant finish. From the Toho Sangyo website

Q: Is this durable enough to use on metal, like a keychain?

It depends on de number of laquer layers. It also needs plenty of time to harden out (sometimes weeks!) for every layer. For a keychain I would use a final layer of protective glaze with high scratch resistance.
