Product Description This Hollywood remake of Wim Wenders' art-house hit 'Wings of Desire' stars Nicolas Cage as an angel desperate to hang up his wings and join the mortal rank-and-file. His chief object of affection is a distinctly down-to-earth surgeon (Meg Ryan), who needs some convincing that the man she starts falling in love with has sacrificed immortality to be with her. .co.uk Review Some critics complained that City of Angels could never compare to Wim Wenders's exquisite German film Wings of Desire, which served as the later film's primary inspiration. The better argument to make is that any such comparisons are beside the point, because Wings of Desire was a much more deeply poetic, artfully contemplative film, whereas City of Angels is an enchanting product of mainstream Hollywood. Meg Ryan stars as Dr. Maggie Rice, a heart surgeon who is grieving over a lost patient when an angel named Seth (Nicolas Cage) appears to comfort her. She can see him despite the "rule" that angels are invisible, and Seth's love for Maggie forces him to choose between angelic immortality and a normal human existence on earth with her. Featuring heavenly roles for TV veterans Andre Braugher and Dennis Franz, the film liberally borrows imagery from Wings of Desire, but it also creates its own charming identity. Cage and Ryan give fine performances as lovers convinced they are soul mates, and although the plot relies on a last-minute twist that doesn't quite work, this earnest love story struck a chord with audiences and proved to be one of the surprise hits of 1998. --Jeff Shannon

Incredible
Love and Light Forever, sadly, far too many people today are still selling their Souls for Fame and Fortune.

I have always liked Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan
I had heard about "City of Angels" but never managed to watch it. Recently it was shown on television and I was excited to finally see it. After the first half hour it started breaking up.But what I had seen was enough to make me want to watch the whole film.So I ordered it ,it arrived a few days later and my husband and I watched it the same night.I have always liked Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan, and the combination of both worked well. What if heaven exists and angels are all around us to guide us, protect us and finally lead us home ? The idea is well thought through ,sad in places but also with the assuring hope that death may not be the last place for us to go.And also the thought that it's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.The film brings home the question what makes us human, with all of our imperfections and limits . Would you swap an eternal life for a life that is final ? Would you leave the security of heaven behind for the chance to experience love ?City of Angels is a highly moving film. Romantic, deep, emotional, and spiritual. We both loved it ,and if you like this genre of film, you will love it too.

An Emotional Film
I had the soundtrack to the movie before the film and after discussing with a friend how much I loved the CD I thought I need to see the film. It is a beautiful love story, without becoming over sentimental but the ending was in someways predictable but that does not take away how good the movie is. Well acted (even for Nicholas Cage who can be hit and miss in his movies at times) by all the actors and Meg Ryan shows she isn't just a rom/com actress here. I would have to say that most men would put it as a chick flick but actually it has a lot of depth and thought provoking elements which they may enjoy if they did watch this movie. Do recommend the OST which is excellent

Very touching
I'll be honest; I love this type of film. I can suspend reality for a couple of hours and really get hooked on things like the supernatural and other worldly experiences. And mixing some of those elements with true love is a real winner where this film is concerned. It won't appeal to everyone but for those with a soft heart and a longing for the perfect scenario, then this is ideal. There's a beautiful ambiance with the film, enhanced by a fabulously emotive soundtrack and touching performances from Cage and Ryan. Amazon's synopsis and other reviewers have given enough information regarding the storyline and backdrop, so I don't feel it's necessary to mention these in any greater detail. But if you do buy this film - and if you're a softie, I urge you to - then you'll enjoy the same details as I did; the looks in the eyes, the beautiful sunrise / sunset, all those things we take for granted, engaging lyrics of the soundtrack, Hemingway quotes and an overall romanticism that makes you feel like anything is possible. 4 stars.

Not a romance as such, so much deeper
I watched this age 13 back in the 90s. I watched this for the second time in 2023 with my 12 year old son. I don't like romances, but the romance combined with spiritual works so well. My son enjoyed it. The sort of film you can't stop thinking about afterwards

Angels In Los Angeles
An angel called Seth falls in love with a female human doctor. Remake of Wim Wenders Wings Of Desire that moves the story to Los Angeles. A decent cast with good performances from Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan as the angel and human doctor and good support from Dennis Franz as a former angel who gave everything up to become human when he fell in love with a human years earlier but everyone involved has done better with Wings Of Desire a far superior film though this is a decent effort.
